He'll definitely have a role.here.

Though this also looks like a guy jumping ship from an absolute tire fire that is the Coyotes at the moment hard to ask for better upgrade if you're a part of the front office
If he's not going to have a hand in managing the Marlies and not a cap specialist, what roll do you imagine he has? Shinning Treliving's thick bottle cap glasses?? lol
Trevling is going to fire someone in management soon imho

No. A lot of players want tax shelters. Sometimes their wives are American. If your wife is American she might want to stay closer to her family. Sometimes there's kids involved. Often they are thinking about getting their kids in private school and eventually a reputable college. Again. A very long list of considerations before the Shane Doan as Assistant to the General Manager decision.
If it's tax shelters they want then you'd think Florida, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Nashville all those years would have been powerhouse teams attracting top players in their primes back then. A lot of these players around here have Canadian wives so coming to Toronto would've been coming closer to their families. Players want to be somewhere they're comfortable at. Doan having a personal relationship with not just Matthews but his family is a pretty damn good reason for Matthews to care about who our AGM is because he's gonna get a high salary, endorsements and all that anywhere he goes.

Handshake deal about a AGM role or role with greater responsibility and the stability in knowing that the franchise isn't being moved I would have to think.

It's not a question of if, it's a question of when.
lol I highly doubt it
Great story though ; )

No he won't.

If you think that Matthews thinks in this manner:

1. Doan
2. Salary
3. Term
4. Endorsements

Then that's your opinion. I just disagree.

I would be shocked, and I would even call Matthews a fool for thinking this way.

I want Matthews to stay in TOR, but I would hope it would be for more grounded/practical reasons. With all of Auston's experience the last thing he would be is Star-struck.

You really think that was on Doan? You can’t be serious. I can take not winning in the playoffs as long as you’re leaving everything on the ice, and that’s what Doan always did! Big difference from what we’ve been seeing here!

Doan loved the country club in Arizona with year round golfing and publicly cried about his friends getting traded away. Not because he thought they needed to keep Hanzal to compete for a cup, but because they were buddies and he didn’t care if the trade helped the team build for the future. Muskoka 5 on steroids.

28 points in 55 playoff games hypercompetitor Shane Doan lmao. That’s who we need teaching Matthews how to get it done.

It's about knowing the best assets to ask for in return for ...

Doan knows the character of the Coyotes.

They're all just assets not friends.
The 2 X Matthews and the 2 X Doans are all Pals and buddies.

Notably, Doan was not only Arizona native Auston Matthews’ favourite player growing up but is personal friends with Auston and reportedly attends the same church as his parents.

It’s easy to picture Doan sitting down with Treliving and the Matthews family during Treliving’s scheduled visit to Arizona as the new Leafs GM establishes the relationship and opens up an initial dialogue about Matthews’ future with the club ahead of a critically-important contract negotiation.

As long as Treliving and Doan change the mentality to a blue collar, hard working, playoff style I’m good. No more All-Star play in the postseason. Harder, faster North/South. You have 82 games to do the cute stuff.
Shane Doan was a great leader and played the game the way it should be played with hard work and determination.

He'll be a great sounding board for Auston, and be able to help him grow as a player and leader as I'd imagine Leafs are grooming Auton to be their next Captain of which Doan would know.

Good thing they didn’t hire Doan to be Matthews' personal advisor on how to score points in the playoffs

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Shane Doan will be leaving the Arizona Coyotes, the only NHL franchise he has been with since entering the league in 1995, to join the Maple Leafs as a special assistant to GM Brad Treliving.

The Star confirmed the news first mentioned by Nick Kypreos in his weekly column last week and broken online by Kevin Weekes on Thursday after it was finalized. Word spread quickly at the NHL Combine in Buffalo, with many shocked Doan would leave Arizona.

“Brad Treliving can be persuasive,” said one team executive.

“Treliving and Doan are tight,” said another.

Doan was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round, seventh overall, in the 1995 draft. He was the last active player to have played for the original Jets. He retired after the 2017 season as the franchise leader in games played (1,540), goals (402), assists (570) and points (972).

Doan, who had been the Coyotes’ chief development officer, comes to the Leafs in the same capacity Jason Spezza held in relation to Kyle Dubas last year, as special assistant to the GM. Spezza stepped down the same day the Leafs announced they were parting ways with Dubas.

Doan has served as general manager of Canada's national team at the world championship and Olympics. Both Doan and Treliving are big backers of Hockey Canada. Doan also has a long-standing relationship with Leafs Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies due to their ties to the Phoenix area. Doan helped coach Knies as a youngster.

Assistant to the GM is pretty low on the Leafs management totem pole.

Does anyone know what Spezza did other than be a buddy to Dubas watching games??
It is like Celebrity apprentice. Or bring your kid to work day.

Not sure they are tasked with anything important.
Doan is a well respected guy...should be fine for the role.

Anyone that beats Mantracker is OK with me!!!

Losing with honour and fight is acceptable.

Not starting on time, making dumb comments to the media, shrugging off losing, repeatedly saying you learned a lesson while doing the same things and not changing your game, is not.

I like this move for the Leafs because I like Doan and think he will be an asset. That said, I'm not sure how or if this truly helps with Matthews. If anything, it gives Matthews more leverage to increase his demands.

He doesn't need to think of any of those other things. A player like him is gonna get them regardless. He literally played for like 400-500k as a 17 year old in Switzerland before even being drafted. It's not being star struck, it's about his personal relationship with the guy. Idk how to make that any clearer.

You must have been part of the team, I’m assuming, to know that. Maybe, just maybe, those stats had something to do with the stingy ownership and who they were willing to pay to have on the team. Of course, your mind is made up ( because you were obviously part of the team). Lol

I don’t think it moves the needle either but not sure I track how you figure it gives him more leverage
