Shane Doan is a pretty big deal, although I thought he'd be an Arizona lifer (though I figured Spezza would be a Leaf lifer).

Doan was also a mean sunovabitch. Further indication, imo, that we'll be looking for more pugnacity and truculence.
He’s the Leafs’ Dwight Schrute, what impact is he gonna have on the babies?

Oh, and lol about this being for Matthews. Matthews is about himself, money and fame, I highly doubt Dian being here vs Arizona matters in any way

Now the Leafs are handing out money to friends and family? What’s next, Paul Marner as the AGM?

This better be a hire based on merit.
Who cares?

Give Papa Matthews and Papa Marner $5M office jobs each if it means the two princes take a couple of mil less AAV.

You are wrong if you think he was hired to help keep Matthews in Toronto. Clearly the Kamloops Blazers legend was brought in to keep my boy Fraser Minten happy. The true heir to the Leafs throne.

Matthews congratulates Doan on retirement

Maple Leafs center pays tribute to 'childhood idol' over Twitter

View attachment 716191

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, watching Shane Doan play for the Arizona Coyotes. Shortly after Doan retired Wednesday, the reigning Calder Trophy winner congratulated the former Coyotes forward on Twitter.

"My childhood idol growing up," Matthews tweeted. "Amazing player and an even better person. Congrats on an unbelievable career Doaner!"

Matthews became a Coyotes fan at an early age and referred to Doan as his idol one day after the Coyotes announced they would not re-sign their captain of 13 seasons. He had a poster of Doan on his bedroom wall, skated with him during the offseason and took the opening faceoff against him when the Maple Leafs played at the Coyotes on Dec. 23, 2016, Matthews' first NHL game in Arizona.
It also was the night when Doan scored his 400th NHL goal in his 1,500th game.

"I loved him growing up," Matthews said June 20. "He was my idol. Then getting to know him, he's such an unbelievable person. As good as he is on the ice, the person he is off the ice really exemplifies everything about him. I'm pretty sad to see it, but he gives it his all and he's been with that organization for 21 years and he's made a big impact on and off the ice."

I guess Leafs will be hiring bozak to attrack mcdavid in future huh?

I like the move. By all accounts, Doan is a promising young NHL executive and he has a history with Treliving. The fact that he might be able to help with the Matthews contract negotiations is a bonus.

You can't be serious.

Why would Matthews do that?

Is he going to be hanging out with Doan on weekends? Skating with him in the morning? Going to the gym with him? Night clubs and Raptors games? Having the occasional beer on his front porch?

Most players have a long list of considerations, and who the Assistant to the GM is has got to be near the bottom.

How about things like:
Salary
Term
Chance to win
Endorsements
Culture
Entertainment (Raptors/Bieber)
Life after hockey
The Coach
Team mates
Being close to Mom and Dad
Being close to friends
Damn, if all that was the case we would've signed a hell of a lot more players over the last 20 or so years don't you think?

Does the Doan hiring mean the end for current AGM/Marlies GM Laurence Gilman?

Doan is replacing Spezza effectively.

Gilman hasn't really been an AGM here for 2 years. He's already effectively been replaced, but I think he still has a contract so the Leafs just stuck him somewhere that allows him to still be around, but not really be around.

Monday: Matthews - I like chocolate covered almonds.
Tuesday: BT - The Toronto Maple Leafs have appointed chocolate almonds as AGM.

Matthews congratulates Doan on his retirement.
And now Doan is here to congratulate Matthews, Marner and Nylander on their retirement after the next contracts.

No, Doan is just assistant to the GM....Laurence is a full on AGM currently.

I can almost guarantee Doan is going to have a greater roll than Spezza had (nothing/Dubas fluffer)

Thinking maybe Gillman and/or Hardy will be let go soon in order for Doan to have an actual roll as AGM

I guess we'll find out soon enough...
