Simple -- hiring Doan is a blatant, over-the-top gesture by the Leafs that indicates their desperation to convince Matthews to sign. The Leafs are pretty much telling Matthews to name his price again. If Matthews says, "I am willing to go max 4 years x 14 million" what are the Leafs going to do? Trade him, after bringing in Doan, or cave to his demands once again? We know the answer.
The Leafs best play was to openly put their cards on the table and show Matthews their blueprint for success, which must include everyone sacrificing a bit to keep the core together while adding a better cast around them. The Leafs need to man up and be sincere but firm, then gauge if Matthews truly wants to be a Leaf or only wants to be a Leaf if they are willing to give him everything he wants. There's a huge difference.
Hiring Doan to persuade Matthews is practically begging him to stay. I still find it completely ludicrous that we seem to bend over for this kid, get on our hands and knees, and give him every bloody dollar he demands for him to love us back.
Hayes is 100% correct. Kucherov, Hedman, McDavid, Draisaitl, Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews, MacKinnon, Rantanen, Makar, Pastrnak, Tkachuk, Hughes, Gaugreau, Stutzle, and now Dahlin reportedly, all committed to their clubs and locked into 8-year deals. Why is it that we're the only team who's players don't want to commit? After everything we've done to spoil them. It's a disgrace. Ownership and management have no backbone.
