2 things:

1) How the hell are the leafs close when they can't get past 1st round? Did Shanahan & Dubas forget there are 3 rounds after....

2)

Onside note:

To me personally, The rebuild / this team never felt right after Nylander/Matthews/Marner signings, they were bad signings from either Cap hit or on the term side. Honestly, it felt like the players got want they wanted and Dubas & Co just caved to them.

Of course, no one could have seen Covid happening but the leafs are so f***ed in the cap now with no #1 goalie and #1Dman. (as good as Rielly is, he doesn't shut down or play against other teams' top players)

the new Muskoka Five appears to be the Muskoka Management group. Small tweaks only, years continue to waste away, fans keep coming back for more.

If we lose next year again, instead of "run it back", the parroted line will be "well this is their group, so they should all go out together with one last push" or something like that. Before we know it, 10 years will have passed. In those 10 years, almost every rival will have had all kinds of new memories and legendary runs to look back on.

Hughes is doing an excellent job in Montreal. Sweeney has made some great draft choices and looks like he will be able to plug some holes on the fly, and has done a great job managing cap. Tampa is locked in for a few more years with all their core. It won't get easier.
Toronto went from that’s how you rebuild to let’s not do that. When we drafted Matthews, Nylander, Marner etc with vet presence we were the poster child for the quick fast rebuild.

Then we got JT and our stars took our young GM to the cleaners and we got too top heavy cap wise. Now we are the laughing stock and a punch line.

So how can we expect anything different next year with the same guys running the show.

The past 3 seasons showed us the big 4 cannot get it done and the support group is always the same type and cannot get it done.
It would also appear goaltending will be an even bigger concern for a team that is never clutch and top minutes defenders are not getting any younger.

Once again Leaf fans will be the butt of jokes as pretty much any other team in the league with this talent and contract status with the studs would be firing those in charge left and right because they did not reach the final 4 at minimum.

Instead we get the same speech for 3 years, well we ALMOST won a round and expect to do better.

Expect the same next year when after a great regular season the same is said from them and some fans that we ALMOST won in the first round but lost to a really good team that was a final 4 only a few years ago and there is no shame in that.

I'm really hoping that's just media speak.

There is the real possibility we can't land Trotz as there is the going home enticement for him, but if we don't knock on that door or others that might be available, then that's strike 2.

We wont trade DeRozan comes to mind. Say the right thing but then when the right opportunity strikes, Suze it by the throat
I hope you're right of course, but my gut tells me otherwise.

I don’t really get this ageism angle when it comes hiring hockey personnel from the blogging world. Seems like a projection that Kyle needs to be the smartest guy in the room and if there are other voices that’ll be bad…

I think there's something to be said about staying the course and being patient.

This team is talented. They are close. Playoff hockey has alot of luck (and bad reffing) play a role in who wins a 7 game series.

Seems we have rolled Snake eyes quite a bit here. The chances of doing that again are slim.

That's a high-level look at things.

However, each roll is a unique event, and there may be weighted die.

When push came to shove, it appeared our team could get forced to the perimeter...again. That's not a recipe for playoff success IMO. If we get the 1st goal...we look great, and I like our chances of getting that 1st goal. But our play style and roster construction looks... Defeated?... in an elimination game when backs are against the wall.

It's like there's a certain 'resigned to their fate' aura that kicks in.

Wish we still had Kadri, or some other agitating type player.

My gut is too hard to read because of fear, fear that what you're gut is saying is right
My guts gut is feeling that it’s guts is saying that this team has no guts and the entire management staff (President, GM, and Coach) are all wearing the golden handcuffs.

They are protecting each other.

Also, why can’t our none core players talk to the media. Everything is so controlled and calculated. Unfoueruabtly you can’t map sheer will, beliefs, and convictions.

No doubt this is a fantastic team that is close to getting it done.

It doesn’t mean bold moves will hurt us. They just need guys who place value on WINNING!

Hard to find that fire when our bottom six isn’t from country X.

How much more improvement is needed to go from barely 2nd best to best?
An approach/system that is adaptable enough to adjust to the "collapse in the d-zone" strategy, minimizes the opportunity for unforced turnovers, and drastically cuts down on the odd man rushes against.

Clearing the area in front of the net would be good as well, but that's more a personnel issue than a system one.

Look at how Sutter is flopping in Calgary too. Also, it’s pretty comical to me, around here last year NOBODY would give ole Lou any credit for the Isles, it was all the coach. Now that coach is a dinosaur. Alrighty.

I don’t care if you’re 10 or 80, what’s your program? The Dubas model hasn’t worked to date, the Shanny regime looks self santisifed with nothingness, it’s a bad look, bordering on arrogance.

Not sure why Keefe keeps getting ridiculed for his comments when he specifically said right afterward that at the end of the day, it's the results that matter.

Protecting each other is a valuable thing and I don't have issue with that until it trumps team success.
Like I said it might be unmodified to Trotz or a clear upgrade on Keefe, but they better try since there is at least one available

Again, 3rd and 4th lines barely provide anything in the playoffs. MM & AM shut down in the biggest games. A goalie away from starting Hutch (I jest but it's close). JT on decline, Muzzin on decline, Kase a non-factor, Holl being Holl, a coach who can't adapt..... doesn't sound like a team that could have gone on a long playoff run if only we didn't play TB. Just more excuses

Tampa Bay’s 3rd and 4th lines have contributed a lot over their current string of Cups. This year, their 3rd line has 8 goals so far, and their 4th line has 7.

That was probably the biggest difference in the series… and that says a lot when you look at the differences in goalies and defensemen.

The same people touting regular season success now are also those who dismissed the previous regular season record under Babcock. Speaks volumes.

What is the other franchise inferred here?

Toronto?

Has anyone heard anyone say that the Leafs brass is satisfied?

Or is this yet another stupid argument made in bad faith?
We have enough of that from Simmons and Feschuck.
Our quota is met by those 2 already.

They are satisfied enough to make no changes.
