I think if the draft happened in June he wouldn't have been picked here but with a strong start in the KHL probably changed some things.

edit: Probably shoulda read the thread before posting the same thing some of you have lol

or you have a reasoned well supported opinion and express it like an angry child having a temper tantrum which will cheaoen what should have been a lucid addition to the discussion.

I said it was terrible and there was no excuse for it. That's all I said, which is an opinion I'm entitled to and is neither petulant or childish. I don't have to like the pick.

Nor did I attack anyone like others are. If you think those are a temper tantrum, it is beyond words... Especially when there are some people, including those in positions of power, passive aggressively back biting people for their opinion.

People love the content when there is nothing to do, but when that content suddenly does not mesh with what happens, people love to turn on you.

I don't hate this as much judging by how much the rest of the first round went off the board.

Seems like after the top 15 there's a good chunk of the draft where every draft board looks different.

Devils must like how he's looked to start this year (and maybe banking on the fact that he's going to be a step ahead of development with a full KHL season versus the likely abridged NA seasons).

My thoughts are that Braden Schneider was earmarked for this selection and the Rangers swooped in and stole our pick.

I believe Mukh was probably the next D on our board and without a 2nd round selection, they had to take a 15-20 spot reach to pick him.

Only Washington (after Rangers) was interested in trading up so the best we could of got, if we explored a trade down scenario, is a 3rd round pick.

I dont hate the pick because he is playing in the 2nd best league in the world and holding his own as an 18 year old. I'm just a little disappointed we missed on Schneider by 1.

At Pick 18, I wouldnt have changed anything. Mercer was the correct pick. If we choose Schneider at 18 and then missed Mercer to Calgary at 19, I would of been more disappointed.

That's true too. He is playing right now. Not all of these kids in this range are.

yeah I would imagine if he didn't have a strong start to the KHL season as he has, he probably would not have been picked there
As an extension of that, his start probably makes him less likely to be available later. Other teams are also aware of his hot start. Thus no sure thing we could have traded down and still picked him.

To top that off, it seems like the full intention was to flip #18 or #20 for a player. Seemed like the trade market was non existent this draft.

At #20, you're playing with house money for a pick you really don't need. You don't need yet another forward prospect. There's no defenders you absolutely can't pass up.

Might as well swing for the fences and go with someone like Mukhamadullin. If he hits, he could be the perfect partner (same with Bahl) to Severson or Smith long-term.

Saying it’s terrible and that there is no excuse is very harsh. Presumably you have reasons to support that position? I’m willing to consider your points. I don’t know the players and don’t have any preconceived notions as to what to expect but saying something sucks without more doesn’t help the discussion. As a father of three I’ll tell you that sounds angry and emotional. That’s my opinion. If you don’t like it feel free to disagree. This should be fun not stressful.

Still not sure how I feel about the pick, but if the stars align and the prospects pan out, being able to potentially throw this guy out on one pairing and Bahl on another could be very hazardous to the other team’s health.

Between Bahl, Okhotyuk, Misyul, Vukovejic, McCarthy and Mukhamadullin, that's a lot of capital spent on a somewhat specific profile. Not suggesting these guys are all the same kind of player, but if you hit just once on a big two-way guy with some physicality who can play 25+, it's transformative. Most teams just do not get in a position to draft Alex Pietrangelo, Victor Hedman or Seth Jones so they have to settle. I get why they covet it so much.

You can argue about the probabilities, I guess.

So if we didn't reach for him, someone else was. Makes trading back hard if this is the kid you really want.

That’s how I interpret that statement also.

Neal had another quote from Fitz saying there were both moving up and down discussions tonight but apparently none made sense.

I haven't been following. What were the Devils saying?

It's pretty clear that they see big, two-way defensemen who can skate and play in all situations as a top priority in the prospect pool.

Well the trade market was non-existent since no first-rounders got moved for NHL players.

Well everyone's gonna claim someone would have gotten their pick soon after. But when Jarmo pulled one out of his rear end the next pick and claimed he had that guy in his top ten then yeah it does seem like the boards became very voliatile around our spot.
