So @StevenToddIves , anything about this pick you can tell us about? lol.

Think of someone like Shea Weber, if he hits his prime, but more of a defensive d-men. I don't think he will be a 70+ point player in the NHL. More like 30-40 points, with solid defensive play and a huge slapshot on the pp. Although I really don't know...lol. His upside certainly is huge.

Not a bad pick. This is a home run swing in my opinion. Either he ends up a top pairing, Shea Weber lite guy....or bottom pair at best 15pt plug that can still clear the crease at least.

Organization will at least have a pretty good idea on which way he is headed over the next year or 2. Which isn't often the case for dmen.

Bad asset management. We could have traded down and gotten additional picks and still could have taken him.
No you couldnt have because 2nd rounders have a premium this year - Rangers paid an entire third to move two spots

I dont like that people just assume you could have had extra assets - it takes two to tango

The fact that he gets KHL play at 18 at all is impressive in itself

I have high hopes for the kid and love the pick. The confidence needed to make it that high means they loved him and maybe even had a good interview with him (if that was possible)

Don't know if he's gonna post again for a while. He has to be pissed. It's hard to imagine this draft going much worse for us.
If by "pissed" you mean drunk, ya, that's a possibility. He DID say he wouldn't be on tonight, as he's watching the draft at a friend's house while drinking.

I hate the fact that there are people who are always upset and pissed and disappointed about everything when the devils do that when something happens that other people don't like, certain posters take it upon themselves to try and act like everyone who doesn't like it is one of those type of people, or try to shoot them down as posters.

Welcome to the interwebz, I guess, but really says a lot. Everyone who didn't like the pick isn't someone who hates everything. It's okay to not to be sunshine and roses about every decision that is made. Some people put a lot of time and effort into formulating the opinions they are conveying and it just means shit to some people because you dare to have thoughts on your own.

or you have a reasoned well supported opinion and express it like an angry child having a temper tantrum which will cheaoen what should have been a lucid addition to the discussion.

Anyone who wanted to swing for the fences can't be unhappy with this pick because that is exactly what this is.

Nah, I'm not British. ;) But you're right, he's a pretty positive guy, I forgot that he said he wouldn't be posting, and he did say something about the Mercer pick.

Don't you get tired of this shtick?

What shtick?

I don't love this pick but the thing about it is that there's more information on it than there would be on other picks in previous years. I wish they had traded down and taken Mukhamadullin, I'd feel a lot better about that.

I have so much respect for Steven and put a great deal of stock in his opinions. I know he is very high on Mercer. I believe he was intrigued by this player but not at 20. I think he will he less than thrilled the Devils went Holtz over Rossi. His logic, as was mine, is that this draft is deep with goal scoring wingers and the Devils could have gone that route at 18 and 20.

I’m increasingly agitated now that Drysdale was taken one spot ahead of us. If the Devils landed him, I would be surprised if the 20th pick wasn’t a forward. On the surface (we won’t know for sure), it looks to me like the Devils went need over BPA and that’s not a good idea.

I really hope I’m wrong and will be glad to eat crow.

Valid points. I will counter the need pick narrative by saying that Shakir is a left handed defender and NJ has plenty of those after last year’s draft and the Hall trade and also Smith. Had he been a right like Schneider I’d have been mire likely to see it as a reach based on need as opposed to just the scouts being oversold on a kid.

yeah I would imagine if he didn't have a strong start to the KHL season as he has, he probably would not have been picked there
