This guy is the biggest wildcard I've seen the Devils draft in a long time, maybe since Gelinas. I come away watching video not knowing what to think at all.
I think it will boil down to his development. He's still young despite having been a pro for several years. If he won't play a full season in the AHL then leave him in the KHL. He almost certainly still needs to fill out and gain experience. My guess is that he'd be like Holtz next season in that the AHL pace probably wouldn't overwhelm him but I'd be surprised if he could hold up in an NHL game.

I mean how big is his upside than though ? A year and a half later I still like this pick but it's hard to wonder how good he can really be.
On paper, his ceiling is a top-pairing defenseman. There's no major standout attributes to his game, but there's no major weaknesses. It all comes down to how well he puts it all together. He could be Ryan Suter or he could be Jon Merrill. Reality will likely be somewhere in the middle, though I'm personally hoping for the next Andrei Markov lol.

I forget who but I remember someone on this board saying his comparable/ceiling was Sergei Zubov which I can see some similarities. Good defensively and also a good passer that can rack up assists.

If both Hughes and Muk hit their ceilings I think we'd have two very dangerous powerplay lines.

He had ups and downs. He has a very good stick defensively and makes a lot of nice plays to alleviate pressure. He needs to add a lot of weight to finish plays in the corner and clean up his gap control. For a first game in North America is was very impressive. The speed was absolutely no issue for him.
He looks like a beanpole still. Hopefully a summer of living in NA and feastig at Jack in the Box will add some beef to him.

Sometimes he was too fast. He had a rush where he accelerated entering the O zone, but Foote (or maybe Schmelzer) didn't and Shak passed ahead of him for an easy turnover the other way. Early he made a homerun pass Talvitie couldn't handle and some other smart passes the Comets weren't expecting which turned into at least one icing.

I know it’s only one viewing but did he look more impressive than Bahl and Okhotiuk ?

He looks more polished. He did get caught pinching more than once and had some forwards beat him in the Comets zone. He skates better than Bahl for their size. He has better vision and passing than both. I'd like to see his shot. He didn't put any on goal. He thinks the game faster than the AHL.

If he'd be willing to stay then this is stupid. Playing on NA ice would do so much more good for him.

Seems weird?
It's a Russian player who apparently had some sort of deal in place with his KHL club for the upcoming season according to at least one online article I found. With the atmosphere being what it is now, if fulfilling his commitment to them keeps him from being imprisoned or impressed into military service as a draft dodger, that probably makes sense.
