Even if they had a verbal agreement to loan him to Ufa for 2022-23, the bottom line is that he has signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils and they get to decide where he plays next season. If they decide it's in his best interest to not stay in Russia any longer they can bring him to NA and there's not really anything that Ufa can do about it.

It would suck for Ufa because apparently they agreed to cooperate with NJ to terminate his KHL contract in order to get Shak signed to an ELC with the understanding he'd play another season in Russia. I know Fitz wants to operate in good faith, but the world is a lot different than it was when Shak signed this ELC in December.

He might just say 'f*** it' and bring him to Utica, in fact I'd speculate that's what he's doing given his comments after the deadline.

"I'm glad we signed him, that's for sure. If we didn't, I'm not sure if we'd even be able to talk to him or his club. So that's one positive. Visa, that's an issue right now. Again, we're working through some of this stuff with his agents. But like I said, the goal was to sign him. It's really up in the air what it looks like in the immediate future, but long term our goal is to have him over here and to be a contributor here in New Jersey."

I’m guessing, based on hearing the Devils would loan him back, that when Mukh signed his contract he wanted to play in Russia next year. It seems like if Mukh could have signed a 1 year KHL deal then he would have; I don’t have the citation on why he couldn’t sign a 1 year deal though.

If Mukh still wants to play in Russia next year then I think the team lets him. The Devils agreed to it and it’s a betrayal to the player to go back on your word.

If Mukh wants to play in the US now then I think the Devils tell his Russia team, “Sorry, situation changed” and bring him over.

That’s hard to see right now. The team is just breaking in Bahl and they still have a couple of other LD projects in Utica who are probably worthy of a look. At least some suggest Okhotyuk has played better than Bahl. I don’t see Mukhamadullin coming west to play in the AHL so maybe if Graves leaves after next season they have spots on the left side up for grabs behind Siegenthaler.

Even if we assume Graves and Smith are out, the left side is still pretty jammed up if Bahl earns a spot. It will be Siegenthaler, Hughes, Bahl, White and potentially one of Okhotiuk, Vukojevic, and even Misyul and Edwards.

Someone said that Luke Hughes is dynamic enough that he can play either side without much issue. Hopefully that's true.

He probably is, but I'd bet Tom Sawyer's yellow tickets that the organization sees him as a LD.
I would think so however didn’t he switch to the right side his last few games last year and this year in Michigan for the reason of the Devils lack of RHD ? Was that decided with discussion with Devils management or just something his camp did on their own ?

Can't see Michigan doing that. They have a roster full of NHL picks, including many first rounders, and four that went at the top of the first round last year. They wouldn't shuffle their lineup to delight an NHL team. If they put him on the right side for a few games, it's because they needed him there.

I guess it's possible that Hughes could have asked to play the right side when he saw an opportunity due to injury or Olympics call ups, and done so to show off that ability to the Devils, but I think even that is a stretch.

Hughes switched to the right side before Michigan . Last portion of the year he did so .I could be wrong but that was of his choosing . Not sure what the exact reason was . Luke says that he tries to model his game like Pierterangelo ( Left shit playing right side ) like him .

Nice to hear he is coming here. Does that mean he is here for training camp right away next year ? He is in NA for good now or ?
I wonder what the scoop is on Gritsyuk now.

Interestingly enough. Many of us, myself included, thought the political landscape would make many Russians want to stay home. Perhaps the opposite will happen?

And of course - many others were suggesting they would not be allowed to come over. I guess if you have an appropriate contract then you can.

The difference is that Muk already signed his ELC before everything with russia happened. So that makes it easier

I'm guessing it's the opposite. These guys have access to information besides state propaganda. Unlike most other Russian citizens.

Why don't you want him getting in a few games? I'm excited to see him in action!
I’m looking forward to him playing hit these are playoff games and I don’t want him just thrown out there without some semblance of practice and adjustment. If he blows them away in practice jet lag and all then sure but I don’t know that left defense is that critical with Bahl Okhotiyuk and Vuko around.

You don’t think Canadian teams will sign Russian prospects? I do. (Not sure how we debate this, we can just wait and see what happens.)

The issue with us specifically is a lot of our guys are still under contract for next season and therefore can’t be signed even if we and/or they wanted that (Gritsyuk, Misyul, Zaitsev).

The only available Russian prospect is Bardakov, who I hope signs, but we’ll what happens there. (Well, we still have Popugayev’s rights, in case we want to bolster our social media team with a little international flavor.)

How are Misyul and Zaitsev doing by the way ? I thought we had one other D prospect that was pretty damn good as well . Vukojevic maybe ?
Salminen Vukojevic Vilen are guys I have no clue how they are doing .

Vukojevic is in Utica and hasn’t made his way to the top of the lineup yet if the callous are any indication. Vilen and Salminen take turns throwing darts at the big picture of @StevenToddIves thry taped over the dart board.
