Many experience sophmore slumps. I'm not willing to write Smith off, especially missing the time he did for an unknown injury. Lets wait till he has his confidence back before over reacting.
100%. Kid hasn't even played the equivalent of a full NHL season yet. Still think he can be a good 40 pt, 2nd pairing, PP1 d-man for us. Time will tell, but he definitely needs some confidence back.

I really dont like if we are burning two ELC years

for what, exactly? Why isnt it only one?

The ONLY reason I can think of for this is he wouldn't be showing up in NA for at least 3-4 years minimum, if he got a chance to sign in the KHL.

Otherwise I do not understand why you burn two ELC years on a project player, no matter the ceiling

Capfriendly is reporting that the contract has a European Assignment Clause this season and next (2021-22, 2022-23). I don't know what happens if the contract slides, whether those clauses slide as well.

As of now, 1 year. The contract will slide this season, so Mukhamadullin's ELC will expire in 2025, barring something unforseen.
That’s what I thought initially, thanks for the clarification!

But its rumored were loaning him next year as well, which is a second year burnt

thats what my comment was about

The contract slides this season. He’s contract age 19 at time of signing and won’t play 10 NHL games.

Next year would be the only burned year because the ELC clock starts ticking at contract age 20 no matter wheee you play.

This year should not burn unless Mukhamadullin plays 10 or more games in the NHL, which seems incredibly unlikely. So it's one year 'burnt' if he plays in Ufa next year, and the ELC ends in 2025. Frankly 2 years burnt isn't the worst thing either but would leave the Devils in a predicament with regard to his next contract.

Ahh right right; I forgot the rule as to 19yo's and assumes this year was a burnt year

Well then I have no quarrels with this signing; if it saved him from staying out there longer, one burnt year isnt bad at all

What if Smith ends up the better player? People doing a lot of assuming based off 20 games.

This isn’t the tread for this but I’m not saying Smith is bad. Are Krebs or Suzuki bad? No, it’s quite the opposite but from a production standpoint, most people would rather have Pacioretty and Eichel.

Prospects are risky even after some success. There is no magic formula to produce optimal outcomes. The top 5-10 draft picks are usually useful, but NHL organization’s often value all 1st round picks/prospects similarly. It’s at least an interesting case study. Can Laf (Rangers) be better than Eichel? Possibly, but unlikely, while Eichel is a proven asset (minus health). The Devils traded for Hall, and Lars never became Hedman.

What makes Smith a valuable trade asset. (Projections, mixed with some Hopes and Dreams.)

Maybe Smith and Muk will be traded for Quinn, making this post pointless..

Love it. I don't care about the burned year as there was a risk of not getting him to come over at all. This way we ensure we have control over him at least so we can see how he develops.

This is true, to an extent.

There is also the physical makeup of Smith vs the 2 d prospects we hope to see push for top 4 spots in the next couple years.

Shak and Hughes both have good/very good size, and both are good/very good skaters. Smith is small and a meh skater.

Obviously more to playing defense in the NHL then just size and skating, but when the small meh skater is struggling, it reinforces those concerns.

20 games? What`s about 63 games?
When he will fix his bambi legs, I will change my mind.
he is ok defenseman, better than butcher atleast, but with Hamilton and Hughes in the roster - it`s a small role for him. Even if both will play on the right side.
