fitz might have wanted that guy the rangers took one spot ahead but muk was next on the list. when you realistically think about it there are only so many teams behind that pick so his option of trade partners is little then you run the risk of someone taking "your guy" what were the devils really going to pick up in a trade back of 4-5 spots? granted fitz might have come out and said he explored a trade back (not sure if he did) even if so i still think thats just lip service to us fans as a "see I tried to trade back but couldn't" an extra 3rd round pick? big deal i rather get the guy that was next up on the list even if it was a "reach" the kid has the tools if he can put it together its a great pick. taking a timeout there only further lessens your trade leverage and makes you look like a fool for getting "snaked" and not having a back up pick ready to go.

Barron is the defenseman I was hoping (probably in large part due to your prospect analysis) for and thought they’d go with because he’s a RHD. Oh well.
Barron definitely dropped because of all the time he missed due to blood clots, though I don’t know anything specific about blood clots or have any idea what the risk of them reoccurring is.

Barron had both health and consistency problems in his draft eligible campaign. Going into the season, he was on several top 10 overall lists. Both Justin Barron and Shakir Mukhamadullin certainly faced risk vs. reward debates among NHL scouts. Personally, my pick at #20 (and I advocated the trade down) would have been Brock Faber, whom I felt was the most underrated defenseman in the 2020 class. But ultimately, I was happy with Mukhamadullin, whose upside was probably greatest of all remaining defenders at the spot where the Devils picked.

Nice! See ya later Smith! (Just kidding, just kidding...)
Just kidding…unless?

Good news. I guess the KHL rumor was some sort of leverage? Not a lot you can do with ELC since I assume he was getting max salary and likely won’t hit any incentives anyway.

That would be my guess. The sticking point was probably where he would play if he didn't make the NHL team - KHL or AHL.

If the the team believed the threat of a two year extension was real, they may have figured they might as well sign him to an ELC and allow him back to the KHL if he doesn't make the team since that's where he'd be anyway.

We all got worried for nothing lol. Good news!! I’m sure we’ll all be keeping a close eye during the WJC.

I dont believe this is even allowed per the CBA

Id have to take a look

You can loan players out. The Devils are doing that with Shak now.

The Devils aren’t obligated to loan Shak again next year but it sounds like they all came to an understanding that it will likely be in his best interest.

A bunch of loans from last year.

NHL Players on loan. Making waves overseas

Sure the Devils can loan a player out but I dont think it can be agreed upon to loan for multiple seasons, as the loan process requires him coming over first.

So if the understanding is he comes over and 'practices' in camp, then goes back on a loan; that Im sure is fine. But Idt the KHL club can know as of today that hed be loaned next year already, as thatd mean he never came over and that doesnt follow with the rules of his ELC vs the KHL season (a loan requires he stays the entire season)

Again, id have to take a look as my CBA knowledge is pretty outdated if Im being honest; less time to study it since time just moves quicker nowadays I guess lol
