It is if there’s an option that’s empirically better.

I’m not sure there is one.

But this isn’t what successful teams have done. They try various options until one sticks. Meanwhile we hand the crease over no questions asked to whoever management feels is the answer and refuse to try anything else until it’s too late. It’s why we have no Cups in recent memory while other teams do.

Probably because there was nothing out there other than league min risks.

Probably because serious contenders don't do stupid shit in net, most of them get a legit starter and spend a few bucks there.

The only reason Vancouver was even looking at Lankinen is because Demko has been suffering from some kind of freak injury, not because that was ever plan A.

When Skinner wins two Cups like Vasilevsky has he too can be spoken in the same sentence.

Otherwise like wtf ... that dude has zero business being compared to him.

He's a MIKKO KOSKINEN tier goalie. Maybe slightly worse because Koskinen was quicker in net.
And what about Oettinger? Hellybuick? Lundqvist? Shesterkin? Sorokin? Saros?

Did you watch the Dallas series?

Which elite goalie do you have in mind?
Did you watch the 1st series where Stu broke a record for the lowest save %?

You want to try that again and take the risk? lol

Oilers SUFFOCATED VAN in game 7 and STu still lets in his first 2 big chances against to make the game 3-2 in the end lol

All of those guys would win a Cup with Connor McDavid/Draisaitl and the team here. Probably multiple times really.

Most of them would probably have won last year. I'm not 100% sold on the Oettenger hype just yet either.

I wouldn't overreact to this one. Oilers have played well vs the top tier of NHL teams this month.

We ran out of gas tonight. We're doing just fine. And the schedule gets much lighter after the Boston game.
10-4-1 over their 15 or something. Just their 4th lost in regulation in over a month.

Yeah I said this earlier.

If we wanted to fix the goaltending it was incumbent upon us to do so after Smith retired. We didn’t now we’re stuck.
Should I link you the Skinner thread from right after Smith retired? This board was universally agreed we had found a good goalie.

Dallas was a better team than us last year. They didn't win. Shesterkin was on the top team in the league. Nothing. Lundqvist was on some really good teams. Nothing. Luongo was on a top tier Vancouver team. Nothing.

Hell, even your boys Talbot, Smith, Gibson... Zip!

Obviously McDrai are really good... But we haven't won anything with them no matter who's in net.

I've already said this, but if Skinner didn't have among the worst numbers of starting goalies in the league he'd get some grace for bad starts. But when his season numbers are among the very worst in the NHL for starters, he doesn't get a free pass for the dog shit games he has.
If he’s got average numbers while being paid below average for starters. Will you give him more passes?

It's funny how elite Dallas has been and despite having one of the best goalies in the league, they have yet to cash in.

Same with Winnipeg.

Other than Ekholm is the team that much different than the 2022 team? Because people really forget how godawful Smith was after the Kings series.
Yeah, adding a #1 good dman doe snot affect anything at all. Talbot was stellar with much less

And a goaltender with an elite processor and puck handler that massively helped this team's ability to defend. Skinner is terrible with his reads and brutal with puck management. Critical skills which bites this team on the ass.

Mike Smith getting the most undeserved rose coloured glasses here.

That guy was every bit as inconsistent as Skinner is. He was terrible during the year and had a great playoff. That’s it.

We bitched on here nonstop about him. “Gotta get schmiddy going” despite Koskinen having a much better SV%.

Listen f*** Skinner, but also f*** Smith.

Dallas was not better. There aren't many better teams actually. We have McDavid and Draisaitl in their prime, we are by default better than most teams just by playing within some structure.

We're better than Florida too.

We love to even the odds and give other teams a fighting chance by having discount bin goaltending. It's like a person who buys a 250k Lamborghini and then cheaps out and puts $100 Walmart rims on the car and opts for discount engine oil. That's the Oilers organization in a nutshell.

Everytime Skinner shits the bed it's the same ~4-5 posters who just stuff their fingers in their ears and ignore what's looking them square in the face.

Such a waste of time arguing with you lot.

"But he stole game 6 against Dallas!!!!!!111!!!!1!!"
It's like a blinfolded toddler who is crawling around and barely misses putting his finger in a mouse trap

Lets throw that toddler back in the room and see if he can dodge it again. That's smart strategy

And yet 98% of “serious contenders” did worse than us last year. And a 100% of them have worse odds at a Cup this year.

No we didn't. C'mon. From viewing Skinner form, fundamentals and ability I've never been sold on him. A lot of posters here that weren't either. Skinner isn't any better than someone like Brossoit, just there, and big in net. Seems like his size is the only redeeming feature. he does make some blocker saves once in awhile. So many flaws in his game.

Most of those "serious contenders" would also have 1 or 2 Cups already if you gift wrapped them McDavid and Draisaitl ten years ago so I wouldn't wear your hand out patting yourself on the back too hard there.

This organization has the best player since Mario Lemieux, and even another guy who is an MVP caliber player, and they have basically one pissed away Finals to show for it. They should have a Cup already, if not 2.

Nah, he's right, Smith was a talented puck handler, battled, and generally thought the game well.

If they had a prime Smith the past 4 years they probably win at least one Cup

I know what Guymez is still saying but hardly anybody here see's his posts. the same poster that "needs more time to evaluate schwartz" jebus.

Skinner could've given up 10 tonight and laid a deuce and he still wouldn't stink.
