Maybe the Oilers have analytics that show grit isn't necessary; tough sell after losing to the Panthers.

We are playing good right now. Analytics are golden but the roster is ugly and being carried by the two best players in the world. We are not one or two players away, we need several players to get back to last year.

There is no heaviness, the d is still too small, and the goaltending is below average. Going all-in on this roster when we have no assets will be suicide imo.

They were up 4-2 and running away with the game with like a period left and change.

Team's know they always have a chance against Skinner so they'll keep coming. Team's don't respect this guy, at 5-0, Vegas still played like they thought they could win because they look at Skinner and know he can be had.

If you had a better goalie that ends maybe 5-3 or 5-4 at worst and Jackson and Bowman are sipping egg nog with rum thinking they're geniuses for this stretch run, instead they'll get to chew on this shit sandwhich result for the next two days.

Hey man like two (Hyman, Nurse) of our big guys were completely ineffective until they got a literal shot to the head so idk maybe wait for each of them to have a glimpse of the lord before writing them off eh?

Tough loss, but there's a lot of the usual HFOil 'after a loss' hyperbole going on.

Look, there's 2 camps. The camp that says we lost because Skinner sucked and the camp that says we lost because our D sucked. I would counter and say that both camps are right. If Skinner just makes one or two tough saves (Or lets in a stinker or two less) we win. If the D doesn't play with more holes than the Titanic, we win. Despite 2 of the 3 pillars of a game (3 of 4 if you count our special teams not being good this game), we still put up 5 and only lost by 1 against the defending champs.

I take solace in the fact that overall, both the things that were so bad tonight (Goaltending and Defence) have actually been pretty good as of late, and we've beaten some pretty good teams in this run. If we get back to form against Boston, then then we can keep going and this can be a bump on the road. If the bad goaltending and D continue, then maybe we can start thinking of grabbing some pitchforks.

Just my 2 cents anyway.

One of the problems is the Oilers kinda expect teams to back off when they hit them with a haymaker, which in fairness is how 99% of these games are supposed to go.

Teams don't respect Skinner and know he's a fraud so they keep coming at us which is not normal.

Vegas played that game down 5-0 like almost no team you see down 5-0 ... most teams call it off at 5-0 ... they kept coming because they played like a team that believed they would break Skinner, and they were almost right.

Same thing tonight, Florida shrugged off an mini avalanche of 3 rapid goals that probably in other situations would sink them and cause them to play down.

But teams don't do that for us because they know Skinner's reputation and know he can be had. In Edmonton some fans and media types view him with rose colored glasses, but the rest of the league, people view him like Team Canada does ... a phony and a fraud.

It's something our team is going to have to learn, you CANNOT let up with a lead or when you think you have full momentum in a game (even at freaking 5-0) because other teams aren't mentally rattled, they play like they know Skinner will cough up a freebie at least once or twice, and they're largely correct.

Even though his numbers show he is horrendous and has the worst numbers of any starter and plays on an elite defensive team
You have suspend your disbelief to believe the Oilers are an elite defensive team imo

They may have elite shot suppression and scoring chances against, no doubt there is evidence of an elite defensive team, but all Oilers stats should be viewed through a McDrai lens.

They are an elite systems team, they would have lost in round 2 last year if they weren't. The fact that Skinner can't even keep his head above .900 tells you all you need to know about what's going on here.

They're actually better than elite, because they deal with this shit brand of goaltending an awful lot, moreso than other top defensive teams.

How many teams are top 10 in the league for goals against while also having a starter who's a miserable .892 for the year?

I think the bigger deal is actually what Skinner does to our team, but no matter who was in goal the panthers were coming hard imo.

A good goalie will cover more mistakes, and we need one because there is a lot. I agree it's not in the cards, despite a solid argument that Skinner has cost us cups.

Saw them in 84. Only time they were in Edmonton. In the Coliseum. Always been a huge fan of them.

I attended a Q and A they did in Hague in about 2005/06. They did a sort of in the round type of gig. It was interesting it was at a University the best I can recall. One of the first questions they got was how did the 4 manage to stay together for what was nearly 40 years at that time. They explained the two main members were in fact brother in laws and that helped and that the other two main members who joined in 67/69 all had the same ideology and personality when it came to music.

Championship teams wouldn’t try to tie a 2 goal game going into the 3rd unless they feel the opposing goalie is a fraud? That’s definitely a theory.

Sigh. The crux of my post was that despite our goaltending and D being craptacular tonight, we still came within a goal of beating the defending Stanley Cup champs, and that while the loss shouldn't be celebrated, it also shouldn't be an indictment of the team considering their general level of play as of late.

Instead, you responded with your 14th straight post about how Skinner is so bad he gives the opposing team super powers. This is the exact 'after loss' hyperbole I addressed in the original post. It's not all doom and gloom. Honest.

The Oilers aren't close to being an élite defensive team ! They gassed a 4-2 lead that they shouldn't have, and yes it's only one game, yadda yadda, but jeez did you have to lose at home to of all teams FLORIDA, the team you lost the cup to last year??:facepalm::facepalm:

Don’t forget my camp. Camp 3 we lost because the refs suck. I believe all 3 contributed to the loss

Well it was the defending champs without their best player on the road after getting shut out twice in a row. I thought it was a really bad game by the Oilers. Mostly from the D and Skinner.

Silver lining I guess is that they managed to score 5 when not scoring was a big problem early in the season.

I just watched this one. Yikes.

It good that the Oil had enough resolve and offensive grit to put up 5, and frankly they were a bit unlucky as Florida was gifted the first goal (thanks for the unnecessary double-minor, ref) and there probably should have been a penalty on the head-shot on J. Skinner that led directly to the 4th goal, but the defensive game just went to merde after the 1st period. (Similar to the Vegas game, where it went to crap midway through the 2nd.)

The Oilers' top players need to understand that you can't skim the surface against a club like Florida. You'd think they'd have learned this after last May. But we have guys wide open in the slot for the 4th and 6th goals, the last of which saw McDavid fly-bying the middle of the slot, where the center is supposed to be defensively.

Both goalies were very leaky, so while it's tempting to blame Skinner (for the 4 millionth time this season) and while a merely 'solid' performance from him would have won the game, I think I would have to ascribe most of this loss to the Oilers' failed team defence.

Fortunately, it's just 1.5 games of crap defence, and they got away with vs. Vegas. But they need to straighten it out.

(Is anyone else a little worried about Bouchard / Ekholm...? They have looked terrible in more than one very recent game. Quite unusual.)

Henrique was an abortion of a signing. 3.5 for a beer league effort every night.
Yeah, I'm getting a little worried about that one, too. He is the one guy where I just haven't seen much of anything this season... at all.

For everyone crapping on Stu Skinner (who was terrible in this one), keep in mind his stats for the past seven games are:
.786
.927
.955
.935
.938
.964
.941
In other words, he's been great in six of his past seven games. Other than maybe Draisaitl, can we say the same of any other Oiler?

Someone tell me there's still hope and that I shouldnt overreact over this bullshit f***ing game
The Panthers are now like the Islanders from 1981 to spring 1984. But yes, there's hope. The just pre-Dynasty Oilers had lost to the Islanders in 10 straight games before winning the 1984 Cup Final.

Sometimes, you gotta lose a lot before you figure out how to beat the bad guys.
