I'm just of the opinion words mean little here. His actions or lack of them will actually say what he thinks of the culture/leadership.

He didn't want to throw anyone under the bus today, it doesn't mean he actually believes there aren't issues.

I liked that he was open to listening to the players perspective on what they want for a coach and for other things. I'm sure he has a good grasp on what the players think is the issue.

Yeah, I can see both sides of it. I don't think he needed to throw anyone under the bus. He could have owned up and accepted responsibility for their comments himself.

Exactly!

You can't half-fire someone just like you can't be half-pregnant!

That is what is holding this team back.

They're afraid of being seen as the bad guys.

They need to man-up and be ruthless.

I mean, the Red Wings have been reported to have fired their staff, buy Yzerman simply said they aren't renewing their contracts. It's the same situation as this. They don't have to use the word "fired", especially when they don't need to if their deals were up. I'm sure Lowry gets the token interview but if he was going to get the job he'd have been extended.

Did Yzerman say we would welcome interviews and basically say if nothing better comes we might hire them back?

Being told "we aren't renewing your contract " is being fired, because guess what, you are unemployeed.

Big difference is that Yzerman isn't pretending he didn't fire them by asking them to re-apply for their jobs.

I doubt he was asked that question. A bit different since Blashill was not an interim guy either.

I think a lot of us read quotes and think they're volunteered information instead of responses to questions. What if they get someone like Trotz but he wants Huddy back? You don't want to completely close the door publicly on the way out.

It's funny that Chevy pointed to the core group of players as the reason for his extension but doesn't want to own their comments from this past week

Edit: comment better suits the Chevy thread.

I can buy Chevy won't publicly say there's huge problems. He won't shit on the team like that publicly

Let's see what, or if any transactions happen. That'll be the most telling.

It's a bad look for the org to air out dirty laundry especially when the exit interviews haven't happened yet.

Tactically it would also be a bad move and hurt in trade talks as it gives leverage to the other GMs knowing that he has to make moves.

Long term contract in his pocket... Chevy can now talk to other GMs like:

"Guys are just upset about falling short of our goal. nothing to see here... but I'm starting to get some calls on Scheiflele... however you say his name... don't really want to move him but I have a really good offer I'm considering... would you consider giving me __________ for him instead?"

very happy with this, even more happy is now I don't have to read posts crying that we were going to keep lowry or even promote huddy...
He’s not 100% out yet. Chevy said Lowry will be granted a formal interview if he chooses. “He’s earned it”.

But this better be just a courtesy gesture.

Makes sense that they would want to hire a proper head coach, although I feel a bit bad for Lowry being thrown to the wolves and then scapegoated for what was mostly Maurice's problems

I don't feel bad for Lowry. He had a rare, rare shot at an NJL HC job, and had the time and some breathing room to make important changes to team systems, hierarchies, roster/ lineup selection and in-game management, and systems execution -- and failed spectacularly in most of those aims:

- Adapting, updating or even fixing failed systems
- Holding players accountable for their play
- Developing clear, coherent game plans for each opponent, and making sure they were played as he expected
- Managing his roster and lineup competently to execute those game plans
- Putting his best team on the ice, every single game
- Having his team ready to play from the start of the game to the end of it
- Rolling back this team's longstanding reliance on vet over prospect (he did make some headway on this with a few players)
- Not making dumbass calls like pulling a goalie without possession or the chance of possession, overplaying Helle until his legs fall off while a good backup grows old on the bench, etc.
- ** Making the playoffs with a roster easily talented enough to do so **

"I spoke to Dave and had a real candid conversation with him and said we would be launching a full-scale search for a head coach and that if he was interested in being apart of that conversation that he had earned himself the right to an interview and consideration for the role."

Ummm. HOW?!?!
Don’t worrry. There is no way they are taking any of those guys back. We can’t sell out the arena anymore and players are asking to be traded. The org has no choice but to go outside to find new coaches, or there will be a full scale revolt on two fronts.

They should’ve kept Kompon and got rid of Flats
Flaherty is close with both Hellebuyck and Comrie. If there is truth to the rumors that Hellebuyck is unhappy and wants out. keeping the coach he is close with would be a good first step in trying to keep him.

Both Hellebuyck and Comrie have developed into NHL goalies under him, Hellebuyck has been a top 3 goalie in the league the last few years under him. There is no reason to be replacing him at this point.

Oh no how will will ever replaced that defensive guru Huddy and what exactly did Kompon do because he did that poorly, now the players need to take some responsibility for a very poor year but this coaching staff was out of their league to the point that it's been reported in past years that the systems and schemes the Jets employed were laughed at by other teams
