Hey guys, quick question. Who has been Ottawa's scapegoat this year?

Phillips, Karlsson, Turris, Legwand, MacLean, Zibanejad, Lehner if he plays, Cowen on occasion,

we like to keep it fresh game to game. Lots of good options.

I would say the Kaptain takes the most heat, though it's not like he gets single-handedly blamed for losses

Target is pulling out of all their Canadian stores.

Target Corporation announces that it plans to discontinue operating stores in Canada

"After a thorough review of our Canadian performance and careful consideration of the implications of all options, we were unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021." <--- (wow!)

Target Canada stores will remain open during the liquidation process.

Target Corporation expects to report approximately $5.4 billion of pre-tax losses on discontinued operations in the fourth quarter of 2014. Target Corporation expects to report approximately $275 million of pre-tax losses on discontinued operations in fiscal 2015. Target Corporation’s cash costs to discontinue Canadian operations are expected to be $500 million to $600 million

Jesus... that didn't take very long, did it?

Target's "Zellers Affair" is probably the biggest corporate faceplant I have seen in Canada in... well, almost ever.

I wonder what will happen to all empty buildings. I think I saw somewhere that most of them were leases from Zellers.

Target bought out the leases from Zellers(HBC), and drastically overpaid for them, IIRC.

As far as I can remember, the deal looked like a slam dunk win for HBC at the time... and hindsight is only proving that to be far more accurate than we could have ever imagined.

Has it even been 3 full years since Target announced that they were coming to Canada?

On January 13, 2011, Target announced that it would purchase the lease agreements of up to 220 Zellers stores for C$1.825 billion.

The first store opening cycle would be in March/April 2013, followed by four additional cycles later that year.

4 years and 3 days from agreement signed, to announcement of pending closure.

Stepped in a target 3-4 times since it's been around, never made one purchase. Good riddance.

I went to Target (at Hazeldean Mall) for the first time a week and a half ago, before I left Ottawa to return here to Indo.

It looked EXACTLY like the Zellers that was there before it, only cleaner. Was that their conscious branding, or were they just so lazy that they couldn't be bothered to change the old floor plans?

"Come to Target: We're exactly like Zellers was, but this time with clean floors and slightly less curmudgeonly staff!" :dunno:

One great reason to hate Target is because of it's data-mining practices. Unfortunately, any company will find that conducting data mining will greatly increase profits but there was a very interesting article by Charles Duhigg to promote his book The Power of Habit called How Companies Learn Your Secrets. The article is like 10 pages but if you check out page 7 there is this interesting excerpt:

About a year after Pole created his pregnancy-prediction model, a man walked into a Target outside Minneapolis and demanded to see the manager. He was clutching coupons that had been sent to his daughter, and he was angry, according to an employee who participated in the conversation.

“My daughter got this in the mail!” he said. “She’s still in high school, and you’re sending her coupons for baby clothes and cribs? Are you trying to encourage her to get pregnant?”

The manager didn’t have any idea what the man was talking about. He looked at the mailer. Sure enough, it was addressed to the man’s daughter and contained advertisements for maternity clothing, nursery furniture and pictures of smiling infants. The manager apologized and then called a few days later to apologize again.

On the phone, though, the father was somewhat abashed. “I had a talk with my daughter,” he said. “It turns out there’s been some activities in my house I haven’t been completely aware of. She’s due in August. I owe you an apology.”

NAC MAC FEEEEGGGLLLLEEEE

edit: after watching the Cher video I didn't realize there was a time when we actually watched performers singing the song instead of being bombarded with obscure sexual or violent images.

Lol, I'm just imagining that father who basically found out via Target that his daughter was a naughty girl. What a way for things to play out.

I remember reading that a while back, also got a big kick out of it

My understanding was that in the States, Target massively discounts stuff and has great deals but in Canada their stuff just got sold for the same as, e.g. a Zellers, so there wasn't really any reason for anyone to suddenly start going there

Economy of scales doesn't apply in Canada like it does in the US

It's amazing how something so simple seems to always get ignored
