I swear if they are dragging this on just to let Sparks scrape up as much cash as he can find to hang with the other bids… Just cut him out already

Seriously. How was he even able to submit a final bid lol?

My guess is the number he submitted on his final bid was the number he was able to raise. When a bidding war started, he had to seek more investors to stay in the game because (1) he's probably already put up all the money he can, personally, and (2) having the Reubens as billionaire backers does not mean he can endlessly draw upon them - they might be in for a set amount and no more.

Here is an Ottawa Sun news article from April 2023 which mentions former NHLer Nick Kypreos' potential involvement with Steve Apostolopoulos and his group.

There’s a new twist to the sale of the Ottawa Senators, and it includes a former NHL heavyweight.

League sources confirmed to Postmedia Monday that Toronto-based billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and representatives of his group were at the Canadian Tire Centre Saturday night to watch the club’s 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of a sellout crowd of 20,057.

A familiar face that didn’t go unnoticed at the rink Saturday was former NHLer Nick Kypreos. The former Hockey Night in Canada analyst sat in a 100-level box with Apostolopoulos’ group, and was seen touring the building with them during the day.

It’s not known what role the 56-year-old Kypreos has, but he would bring a strong wealth of knowledge to the table. He played 11 years in the league, won a Stanley Cup in 1994 with the New York Rangers, had a role in the NHL Players’ Association and is a respected analyst.

Kypreos is missed on Saturday’s HNIC panel with host Ron MacLean, but has a daily podcast on the Leafs with Justin Bourne on the sports-radio station The Fan 590.

Apostolopoulos is the managing partner of the Triple Group of Companies, a commercial real estate firm located in Toronto. He also is the founder of Six Ventures, a private equity fund that manages more than $5 billion, and attended Harvard University.

Agreed. I seem to recall that very early in the process it was reported that Sparks could go as high as 950m. Everybody fell over.

That may be the limit of the UK backing and now that bidding is apparently above that he's scrambling and we end up adding the Dragons. I'm waiting for Shaun Majumder.

Further to this, the NHL must be wondering what happens next with a new arena build. If there's a group that would be guaranteed to go cap in hand to the city, province, feds, it would be this group.

I figure the main reason to keep a group like that around is to raise the price and getting some press. It feels like the extra bidder has achieved its goal and the press is turning from "wow, look at this group and all the interest" to "wow, look at this group. I've lost interest"

Never say never buttttt

Probably not happening
if it was to happen, I think it would be after the bid has been awarded the franchise. I don't imagine he would want to have another group give up the chase at the last minute. It could also be 'sold' as him being invited in to shore up the financing increase the charm per owner quotient.

Welcome to Ottawa. Episode 1 pre opening title scene:

A man, is walking around his house. We only see him from behind, but he is clearly carrying a baby. On the wall, you can see a Wrexham Football Club scarf and on the credenza is a bottle of Aviation Gin.

His cell phone rings. He struggles to get the phone out of his pocket while balancing the baby. The camera catches the Mint Mobile logo on the phone. It's not a known caller. The area code indicates a number from Ontario.

The camera pulls back; the call his answered. He looks straight into the camera.

"Hello, this is Ryan"

freeze and opening title "Welcome to Ottawa. Never say Never again"

There has to be some reason for the delay.

Here's a guess (that's all it is, speculation). A couple of bids are below a level, let's say $900 m (arbitrary number to advance the hypothesis, pure guess). They are the Andaluer & Kimel bids. GSP would like to drag the Andaluer & Kimel bids above the $900 m mark, so it behooves them to keep the Sparks group in the mix (and the Apostolopoulos bid) to create pressure to move the other bids above the target they've set. This isn't an attempt to rule out Apostolopoulos either although the connection to Kypreos is pungent.

Anyhow, it's just a guess & an attempt to make sense of the situation with very little info available. It wouldn't be too surprising that this drags into next week.

Or they're doing everything they can to prevent the Sparks group from winning, lol.

Apostolopoulos and his money bags would be nice and I don't think just because Kyperos is hanging around with him he's going to get a POHO job when everyone in hockey might want to interview for the job.

f*** you money is nice.

My view as well but obviously Kipper as POHO is worst case scenario.
