Mendes is obviously getting scoops from Sparks, and I have no issues with him reporting what he's told. Garrioch has been more in tune with the Remington and Andlauer groups, and he's reported what they've told him.
There's this perception that Mendes is a "real journalist" and Garrioch is a shill, but really, they're the same. They just talk to different people. They're both reporting about things that, at the end of the day, aren't all that important. So I'm not going to hold them to the same standard as a White House correspondent.
With that said, where I think one can criticize Mendes is how he treated the Snoop Dogg announcement. He's been someone who's been very outspoken about the problematic culture of misogyny in hockey (and sports in general), but when it came to Snoop - a celebrity who's built an entire career on the objectification of women, and if you follow his Instagram account, continues to use women as nothing but sexualized props - he went all fanboy. "Oh my gosh Snoop so cool everyone loves Snoop!" If Joel Quenneville or Stan Bowman end up back in the NHL, I bet that Mendes will write a much more critical piece about their past and won't just gloss over it.
