Champing is like gritting, gnashing, grinding of the teeth, implication is anxiety or nervousness involved in the action. Chomping is biting. So yeah super similar phonetically but different enough wrt meaning that I understand why ppl feel the need to correct. Either way the turn of phrase gets the point across though.

It’s like when people use irregardless instead of regardless. Both are now acceptable because people have used one incorrectly in place of the other for long enough that it’s slid into acceptable language. But i also get why some people are irked at incorrect usage.

…Now do nauseous and nauseated.

Dis-irregardless, it seems a billion doesnt go as far as it used to. I would have thought a single owner is better for us as fans than a conglomerate or group that may have competing interests. But im guessing large debts will follow the franchise either way.

It's pretty obvious after last night how big it would be for the brand/marketing to get Reynolds involved. Whoever is the favourite to acquire the team would be dropping the ball big time by not getting him involved in some way.

You're wrong, man. Language evolves. You may not like it — I understand being stuck in your ways, much as I am with the word 'literally' also meaning 'not literally' — but culture causes shifts in the way language is used all the time.

Sorry, but in this case (then vs than) it is simply not true. You cannot Simple’s use one or the other, and not have the meaning or context change. If i said “ I’d prefer a haircut than getting punched in the face” …. Using “then“ instead for than makes a big difference….. this was very clearly explained in grade school. Than vs. Then: Difference and Examples

So when A mistake is repeated often enough, it becomes “accepted” but those who don’t know the correct phrase?
you know who does that? Low knowledge people, who also use then instead of than, and people who use there instead of their or they’re.

“A nod’s as good as a wink to a blind horse.”

Yes Monty Python got that wrong…

Champing and chomping are synonyms, champing however is archaic in modern use outside of this one antiquated saying. Using one vs the other doesn't change the meaning,

Not sure why you're debating that language evolves, are you low knowledge for using the word access as a verb and not exclusively as a noun? If you're in your 60s or 70s, you might have even been around before that change took place.

The conversation we’re having here is about chomping vs. champing. I’m with you on the then/than difference, but that was a different thread entirely.

Language sure aint static, it also succumbs to populist pressures. Apparently that's not unique to English either where there will be an elitist and commoner's version of the language. But you still cant put no aints in you university papers and expect top marks.

Per se is another funny one. I usually read that as 'in and of itself'. It's not offer sheets per se that cause RFA's to get big bucks but rather the threat of them. Its not finishing a check on Chabot that is a per se violation of the rules but when you hit him square between the numbers its problematic.

Cause anal-retentive is spelt with a hyphen damnit. :)

Which begs the question...

Interesting that Bruce write in is article. François Gagnon told him that Desmarais reach to Kimel brother to be part of the group to buy the Sens. Imagine if they bring Reynolds with us

Kimel is a madman. Definitely not the type of guy we want owning the team. Met him a few times and he can safely outdrink anyone I know. His reputation as a party animal probably won't go well in Ottawa, and hugely sexist. Talked to some friends at Club Bell who recently told a story of this guy , at 79, drinking a bottle of Vodka and crushing guys half his age. Hell of a guy to party with, and he basically will bang anything that moves lol.

This subject is a bottomless pit for a 60 year old, such as myself.

Chaffing at the bit is acceptable also I believe.

The word "literally" has come to mean its opposite, "figuratively" ( I hear "I literally died", for example..
Enamoured OF, not With
should HAVE, not of
Homed in, not honed in

Hoisted WITH his own petard, not By (a petard is not a hoisting device. rather a noxious bomb I believe. Same root as "peter" in French)

Sorry to keep this off topic.. :)

My initial reaction after reading this was "now Jimmy Kimmel wants to buy the Sens?"

Just read Bruce's article, and thankfully it isn't Ronny!

Michael and Jeffrey Kimel are his nephews, but that entire family is thick.

Also, Michael Andlauer and Rocco Tullio are stepping forward.

Malhotras also in the background...

There is a name that hasn't yet been mentioned in the media. Makes sense with the real estate play in question. Is this something you've heard personally?

It’s mentioned in the Garrioch article. First time i’ve seen his name brought up

As builders of some of the most “value engineered” properties in the city, I hope the Malhotras (Claridge) are kept far, far away from a Lebreton rink build.

Interesting that this references multiple offers to Melnyk to try to buy the team, one of which being 650 million. So much discussion here about it and whether real offers were made and how much.

GARRIOCH: Two OHL owners have teamed up in a bid to purchase the Ottawa Senators

Some really big players in there. Love to see the Desmarais involved they have very deep pockets. I really hope that the league vets the winning bid with the financial warewithall to build a new arena at Lebreton ASAP.

Atleast they are local. Personally id rather not have a Toronto based business man as the front runner to buy this franchise. We tried that once, no thanks. Want something locally based in the bid. Apparently Desmarais was working with some local parties. The family has strong ties to Ottawa too.
