I don't really blame them.

I personally don't believe in Bronze medal games but that's me.

It's a weird concept for events that require a tournament. It makes sense in a race or competition decided by judges where in giving the third best performance you were trying your hardest to win. But it's odd to be playing for a medal when you've already been eliminated from winning. I think in Olympic boxing and martial arts they forego it and just give both semifinalists a Bronze Medal.

Do the SHL and other Swedish leagues have bronze games in the playoffs like we do in Finland? I think that's part of why at least the Finnish teams care more about "winning a medal" than the NA teams for example. It's part of the culture.

I just lol'd at the thought of the Ducks and Rangers last year, after losing heartbreaking Game 7's in the Conference Finals, facing off in a best of 7 "bronze medal" series.

I certainly don't find myself overly depressed if Canada loses a bronze medal game, but I would rather we win them.

Easy to see how teams could mail in such a game, though. Canada certainly did at Nagano 1998, and at the WHC in 1999, 2000, 2006, just as the USA did in Sochi.

I understand the need to hand out a bronze medal but part of me prefers the Canada/World Cup format. Lose the semis? Go home. But that's Canadian thinking - gold or nothing. Other teams, like the Slovaks, Finns and Czechs, seem to appreciate it more

At least the IIHF doesn't make the juniors play a series of meaningless games to decide 5th-8th place like they did in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They even kept the 5th place game until 2013!

Imagine having to waste your time with that.

It's not about what the fans think. I bet most of those kids will very much appreciate a bronze medal. Might not be immediately but a while or after their careers they sure will. For some this will be the biggest event of their career.

And also for smaller hockey nations it's memorable, like for Slovakia last year.

It's really weird: we have a low-key Russia and a flamboyant Finland tomorrow... The world turned upside down. Have really no idea how it will go, but these two are obviously the best teams of the tournament.

:handclap:so true

I agree Bronze means you are 3rd best IN THE WORLD! All jokes aside, it's something to be proud of for the rest of your life!

Congrats to Russia. They deserved that win.

They won most of the board battles and 50-50 pucks. They were the hungrier team all game.

The U.S. had some bad luck with posts and crossbars. After they went down a goal (Bjork failed to clear, then got absolutely owned on that spin move, and Werenski was unable to make a routine defensive play to keep the Russian player below the goal line), they rode their top players into exhaustion.

Why do you guys think Sweden Value a bronz more than USA?

Turns out they don't.

Sweden's record in bronze games at the WJC is actually one win in six - and they couldn't help but beat Switzerland in 2010.

So maybe this next game should be called the Indifference Cup?

Would be a more fitting name:laugh:

Dont get me wrong tho if this would have been fifa WC i would do care if this was the bronz medal game maybe im just ignorant?

I don't think I've ever watched one involving Canada.

Congratulations RUSSIA!!!
Egor Korshkov is our best player tonight. Watching him from 1st game on this tournament. Thinking he`s playing Nichushkin-style - touch-down goals, physical play, great puck-control

Thanks USA for this game on this tournament, it was pretty good. Thinking many players from this team can be great NHL players in future - Matthews, Dvorak, Tkachuk, Werensky and Big Bad Bruin Carlo :) Good look

This, and when you have teams that would be freaking ecstatic over that medal, I feel that it's a bit disrespectful towards them to not bother to take it seriously for three periods. Third best in this level of tournament is still pretty damn good.

US was not very good. Hate to hop on this bandwagon but they were definitely missing guys like Connor and Garland.

What were those 2 going to do ?

If debrincat was invisible Garland would be like Casper the ghost

Conner is as soft as puppy crap .... and we didn't need to score anymore goals, just put the 4 or 5 in the net in 1st that we didn't. Those were by our scoring players that blow away the kids you keep bringing up.
move on to another topic

It's hard to get motivated for something that isn't important to you.

Isn't there something that says that players winning the bronze medal are happier then players getting the Silver medal?

That's my point -- it should be important. It seems very arrogant and entitled to come into these events with a gold or nothing mentality, especially when you're sharing the ice with teams that are celebrating every win like the birth of their first child. But I guess that's a difference in culture and expectations...

I don't see the difference.

There's still an additional Gold medal bout.

They'd be competing again if they'd won.

Not to mention, hockey is physically taxing.

Try it. OK, a bit too harsh response but the message stays. Just try it and then tell me that there is no difference. I will respect your opinion.

Why is that arrogant? Do you really prefer that loser mentality we have here in Scandinavia?

I would say that is the mentalty that make US so great in pretty much every sport they do and their atlets aswell.

Definitely Wilson set the tone for this game by underestimating Russia, seems like a shortsighted move by supposedly an experienced NHL coach. Even of you think that, don't give your team a reason to underestimate

Let it be bellowed from the stands above...

Fire Wilson! Fire Wilson!

I'll be much more upset with my team if they disrespect their opposition than if they lose.
