Normally I'd be thrilled that we're not going to be overpaying for a power forward that will fall off a cliff in 3 or 4 years. But this just means Benning will throw money at someone like Ladd instead, sigh.

Saving Benning from himself.

You should all know this isn't going to stop Jimbo from doing something stupid. Just has more money now. Very scary thought.

I know everyone keeps harping on Lucic's body breaking down by year 4 etc etc., but are these same people not afraid of what Loui Eriksson might sign for? I could easily see him getting between 6-7Mx7 and that will take him until he's 37 years old. Seems like he could easily be just as risky of a contract.

There should be concern with any contract 6-7 for a player exiting their prime.

If that's the deal that goes down, I can't wait for Oilers fans to say he signed there and took a discount because he wants to play with McDavid, or because the 'new stadium is state of the art', or whatever else Lucic will say in his press conference instead of saying no one else came close to the Edmonton Moneybags.

If he signs in edmonton for that amount or more, it's cause he followed the money. I think majority of us know that certain teams have to overpay to get top players... unfortunately that's just the way it goes

I would imagine people wouldn't admit the bolded because none of us will likely have any clue what the other 9 teams interested in him were willing to offer.

You're probably right its a risk either way, but if anyone is kidding themselves that Ladd, Eriksson and Okposo won't also be getting likely 6 years then they haven't been watching free agency for very long.

Most of the teams didn't make an offer (well none, officially). From what I've seen, only Dallas, Edmonton and maybe Vancouver made concrete pitches. Most have just inquired and walked away at the alleged prices.

It's also believed that Dallas may walk away because they aren't willing to pay as much. So, right now it looks like a default Edmonton win by money alone.

Where are the reports of this?

Where are the reports of this?

You're not allowed to make an offer. The only teams that have visited him (as been reported) is Vancouver, Edmonton and Dallas. Unless you've seen other teams?

Also, from earlier:

He didn't visit every team that inquired, as many teams were doing simply that.

Even Lucic could see that the Canucks have nothing but over-the-hill vets and overrated prospects.

What will a desperate Jim Benning do?

He has 15M in cap space and is gunning for the playoffs with a roster that finished 27th last year. Oh boy

I thought we were 28th????

Anyways how suprising Benning failes to get HOMETOWN boy Lucic here what a disgrace Benning is for this city

Ok so what does this prove on your original post? He visited Edmonton and Vancouver, the 2 places that he was rumoured to be most interested in going to. Dallas flew out to meet with him, and he was likely in contact with the other 10 interested.

So how would you know that the teams that aren't a part of the final 2 had anything to do with the type of contract they were offering, when Lucic is the one who cut the list to 2. Its pure speculation on your part that the others walked away at the alleged prices, as much as it would be pure speculation by EDM fans claiming he signed here because of McDavid/new arena/Peter Chiarelli.

I think Lucic was out of Vancouver simply because of how they treated him. I remember him saying he was done with Vancouver one game after allegedly being constantly harassed at a night club, or something like that?

Of the remaining teams, Dallas and Edmonton. It's been speculated Dallas will not make a significant offer. It's speculative, sure - but how many teams inquire on a player but don't actually go out to meet him for reasons other than the price? You don't think if Lucic wanted 1M X 5, more teams would meet him?

I think despite the over payment Lucic is still going to be the way to go for the oilers. They need his presence, physicality. They desperately need a change in attitude on that team.

Can expect him to stay productive maybe a little longer if he has McDavid on his line. But yes, i think everyone knows it will be an issue 3 years or so from now. But will just have to deal with that then.

If the cap hit has a 5 at all in the front then the oilers will have done well. I dont think GM's are too willing to shell out massive dollars anymore. Just look back at the last free agency.

Which was as much a second hand report as the one that said he agreed to sign. I'm not of the belief that this is a done deal, but if it were then what else would Lucic say? He can't confirm it.

to be honest with you i really don't see him signing with edmonton at this point in his career contrary to popular belief just not in his best interest
