Speculation: Seattle Expansion Draft Thread.......

I have the same question.

There may be a loophole in the draft rules that isn’t clear.

Seattle can sign any unprotected FA (UFA or RFA) between the 17th and the 28th and offer an 8-year contract.

Also, if Seattle signs an FA between the 17th and 21st, it becomes the draft selection for that club.

So what happens if they draft a player from the Aves on the 21st, then sign Lando on the 23rd to that 8-year contract?

1. Can they continue to sign FAs after the expansion draft?

2. If they can, would their draft selection revert back to the original club?

A bit loose then rules in that area.

they can sign anyone after the 21st but max 7 years and not lose a pick.
If they sign someone before the 21st they can sign for 8 years but they lose a pick.
Kind of a pointless perk

Thanks for the explanation. I guess it's a way to entice few agents. Extra year, extra $X million while getting a head start on signing guys.

I'm bored waiting for Friday night. So having said that, I see Jake Bean was left unprotected. I don't know anything about him and how he's developed the past few years. But he has decent size, LHD and the right age for us (23). How about a Kraken expansion selection / trade.....Kings #8OA for Bean + Seattle 2021 2nd round pick.

Yikes! Could have just dealt directly with Carolina. 8OA is way too steep.

And that’s the loophole.

From ESPN:

What are the rules regarding Seattle signing a free agent before the draft?

Kaplan: From Sunday to July 21, the Kraken have an exclusive negotiating window with any pending free agents not protected by the other 30 teams. If Seattle signs one of these players, it counts as their selection from that club. And if Seattle signs that player to a deal before free agency begins on July 28, then the Kraken can offer an eight-year max extension. After that, Seattle can only give out seven-year deals this summer.”

Emphasis mine.

This implies that Seattle has an exclusive window to sign any unprotected UFAs from the 21st to the 28th while all other teams cannot. And there is no more of the expansion draft pick restrictions?

That will be a massive advantage Seattle has on the field.

How the NHL expansion draft will work for the Seattle Kraken

But then we'd have had to protect him and lose someone else on D.
Yeah, #8 is too much, but that's why I also had #35 pick coming back (pick swap) in that proposal. But if that's too much, maybe Bean for something else like Thomas or maybe #49+. Just spit balling trying to find a good, young LHD to bring into the fold that at/near NHL ready.

I’m curious how much medical information the Kraken get on all the exposed guys? I’d hope it’s everything and anything they want. But if it’s not everything, it makes me wonder about these convenient injuries floated by media about high priced, yet very valued, vets like Price and Weber. Maybe it’s all 100% valid….maybe
Seems suspicious but the NHL let Tampa Bay get away with N Kucherov horseshit...what's good for the goose is good for the gander right?

If I’m giving up 8, it’s for something WAY more proven than Bean.

I hate how Seattle can talk to agents before selecting players. That shouldn't be allowed. You haven't selected those players from the teams, why are you allowed to speak with them to see if you can sign them? Expansion draft is before the UFA period. If you want to get first dibs, draft the player.

It's lame, but there are a couple reasons for it.

First, the best options for a lot of the guys made available are RFAs, as there is a ton of guys with bad contracts who were obviously exposed hoping they would be taken. If Seattle fills out their roster with RFAs and take a few guys like Landeskog and Laine and can't sign them, they aren't going to make the cap floor. They would need to know that going in.

It also prevents teams from having handshake deals with their UFA's telling them they are going to resign them, but not until after the expansion draft. If they get taken, they don't sign and the team ends up losing no one. They have to select from every team, and not knowing up front if the player will sign would prevent that.

I am in the exact opposite opinion of this. Why would Seattle select, let’s say Ovechkin if there was zero chance he would sign with them? How are they supposed to build a team? “Dibs” means nothing.

Some of the perks for paying $650 million to get into the league.

Sick and tired of hearing about Seattle, just get this thing over already!

Soon enough considering the media and/or agents will leak most of the roster like they did with Vegas.

Already know a handful of guys likely on the way there and it's early in the day..

Oleksiak (DAL)
Larsson (EDM)
Dreidger (FLA) with the possibility that Vatrano is on his way in a side deal.
Gourde seems to be the target from Tampa.

These f***ers could end up with a pretty good team to start. I don't like it. I like to see expansion teams get destroyed in their maiden season like San Jose and Ottawa did.

The cap changed everything.

If you’re surprised Brown was protected you need to pay better attention. Apart from leading the team in goals (so from a hockey standpoint it makes sense) his wife was recently given a job in the organisation. For me that nearly guaranteed he’d be protected, baring a significant trade.

He’s retiring a King and it’ll be no shock if he takes a job with the team when he does.
