Speculation: Seattle Expansion Draft Thread.......

I would have swapped Quick and Brown. Brown can be replaced by a better player and Quick is a cheap option to retain as backup as the Kings would be grooming a Wallstedt or someone else to develop in the minors.

You can’t protect two goalies. If you want to protect Quick, then you expose Petersen.

WTF are the Kings protecting Brown?

I’d be open to the Kings using 8OA to get Wallstedt. Hopefully in 3-4 years he can be an NHL starter like Vasilevskiy. Kings need a top tier goalie prospect.

A lot of scouts think Cossa has a higher ceiling. A reasonable chance he also is taken high in the draft. He's more athletic and and is bigger in net. Wallstedt is ahead of him right now as a technical goalie, but in 5 years, that's what you are betting on. It will be interesting. I don't think Cossa's getting enough ink in the draft press.

He’s been in the league for 5 years now and has yet to crack the 40 point mark. He’ll be 25 this season, and I think his value will only go lower. Just my opinion though…
What a way to evaluate him. There is so much wrong with this.

6 players have hit 40 points the last 3 seasons and that includes Kopitar 3 times.

He is basically in this league for 4 years. This past season he would easily have hit 40 points if thats so important.

Kempe does not even have 60/70 points potential and you make it sound 25 is old already.

Strange, very strange.

You say to lose brown for nothing. I’m saying to keep him and move Kempe in a bigger deal for a better winger or a #2 defenseman.

No thats not what I said.

I also think the chances of Seattle taking him are pretty low and if they do, than we lose a 37 year old with little gas in the tank.

Yeah, not sure Petersen has shown anything to warrant being protected either. Other than his age but he’s a ufa soon as well.

Kings could be looking at a completely new tandem in 2022, which I’m fine with.

Get some D in front of him that can move bodies and skate\pass the puck out of our zone quickly. Our D zone coverage was abssimal last year.

His stats from the WC shows he can be an excellent goalie.

Cal is really good when he is on his game but there are times he falls into bad habits. Got to clean that up. I think he'll get much better once the team in front of him starts to play better.

I am happy that they protected Brown. No reason to roll the dice, he's an excellent leader, they've talked about him still working with every prospect, he's one of the best goal scorers on the team and is still one of the most physical forwards we have on the team, and finally, he f***ing earned it. He brought himself back to life and has proven that he is literally the most dedicated King in the history of the team and deserves to finish his career here if he so chooses. You don't f***ing trade or let Dave Taylor walk and you absolutely don't with Brown as well. He's a King for life and can play on the bottom 6 for life as far as I'm concerned.
I feel like I'm one of the biggest Brown defenders around here, but I don't see any reason why he should be protected.

I think it's highly unlikely Seattle was going to take him.

You have to look at who Seattle's GM is. Francis is one of the most conservative, long term thinking GM's in the NHL. He's all about hoarding assets for the long term. He wasn't going to select a 37 year old with one year left on his contract.

With the Kings cap space, I bet there was at least one very good deal they couldn't pull the trigger on in the last few days because they don't have additional room on their protected list due to Brown being on it.

They probably could've had someone like Tarasenko for peanuts.

If I am Francis, I am taking either Strand or Clague.

Strand has the makings of Willie Mitchell the sequel. 6'4" 210 freaking steady, never gets knocked down, makes split half second decisions that are the right one, 100% of the time, accurate passes that are 70 mph crisp on the tape. Good in front of the net. Neutralizes opponents effectively. 0-1 gaffes per game. Mitchell also was late bloomer. I would ALMOST have traded Walker and protected him. He's better than McNabb, that the GK's took

My guess at what Seattle does…only ufa I put is

Van Riemsdyk-Domi-Tarasenko
Drouin-Gourde-Eberle
Niederreiter-Jarnkrok-Dadonov
Bunting-Girgensons-Athanasiou
Compher/Aston Reece

Giordano-Demelo
Edler(ufa)-Zadorov
Dermott-Lauzon
Soucy/Guhle

Driedger/Vanecek/Kahkonen

Beniers at the draft…

Offense is solid…defense, not so much. Too hard to pass on Tarasenko for Dunn though…
Gourde is getting replaced with Beniers and will take Cal Foote instead

Brown could be a massive trade chip at the deadline if he has another season like last. A team looking for net front presence the odd hit and leadership would be all over him as he is UFA and LA has the cap to do Max retention.

you have to remember he wouldn’t be on a playoff teams first line. He would be put out there on power plays and possibly a third or fourth line. Look at what TO paid this last deadline for Foligno.

I also think if Seattle was smart they grab Quick and trade him to a team like Edmonton, Toronto or Colorado with retention. Yes he is old but look what he did last year in front of a crap team and one of the worst defense in the league. Put him on a more structured team that can clean up some of the mess and get them on a hot streak and he can carry a team to the cup

You have to remember he wouldnt be on a playoff teams first line which means no big minutes, no kopitar, more grinding on the walls and more shutdown defensive responsibility while playing next to cizikas, goodrow, carrier, bellemare type players.
He would not do as well in that situation.

That is exactly what I said. He would basically be there for a power play net front presence. The guy would also be very dangerous on a teams third line with no coverage on them. The guy can still pound in goals from 2 feet outside the crease with the best of them. Put him on a team that actually gets shots through to the net and he would be in his heyday.

I mean does it even matter that they protected Brown? Wagner, Grundström, Lizotte aren't worth a damn either, who cares that they're exposed.

Brown was terrible the last 20 games. Was falling down a lot, couldn't make rudimentary plays, was ineffective on any line he played, and no longer hitting anyone.
He is pretty much done, now. He will not get any better. He will never score 18 goals again and I would wager not hitting 15 this year.

If players like Kupari, Turcotte, Kaliyev, Fagemo, Thomas, Madden all have great Summers and are hungry and want jobs,
Brown will only make the team, based on TMac being gracious and over respectful to Brown. (yes, he has earned respect, but should not make the team,
if beaten out by another. That is not respect, that is not doing the right thing)
