If the "Plan" as a result of this was to:

Trade Laughton too.
Play Johansen in that 3C spot and... well... hope he rebounds to the guy from 2 years ago or at least a servicable middle six C.
Then with that 2nd hope in mind flip him next year if it comes to fruition.

Well, it would not be the worst train of thought. BUT I guess Laughton wont be moved...

Most of the people who were insisting we can't get a 1st for Walker were the ones gearing up to defend the team for not selling him, though.
I think they (I was one) were saying “there’s a value Walker could be signed for that would be more advantageous than to take back a 2nd round pick (if that’s all we were going to get).”

Once the numbers Walker was looking for became public, I was very much off that train.

I think this is a home run from Danny and I wouldn’t put it past him at all to get another asset from Johansen next deadline at 2MM.

I like this trade. RyJo can be bought out, he can be a depth piece if he finds himself again, and who knows, we could flip the 1st for another good young D man to keep the rebuild going.

TBH, good. I don't give a rats ass how much dead money this team has over the next couple years, Comcast isn't exactly hurting for cash. Flex that financial muscle, use every penny of cap and LTIR space to get more actual player value, and then, in a couple years when all the dead money clears, we'll be better off in terms of roster quality.
It's not about cash. It's about cap flexibility in a hard cap sport. They have $9 million in cap tied up in two players they do not think are NHL players. Do you know how valuable that is? That's a mid-1st on it's own.

Only matters if you believe it. Late 1st round picks this draft aren’t held in as high regard, that’s why you saw 2 contenders jump at the chance at moving them early.
Huh? Why didn't Colorado hand over their 2024 pick if that's the case.

I can promise you teams have no clue the relative strength of the 20s in the 2025 draft. Hell they probably don't even know how this year's is going to shake out.

Great move, dump Ryjo, give the Phantoms that playoff push, and it just costs Comcast.

Maybe because they wanted a low cost RHD and to be rid of Johansen, and this was their only chance to do both at once. Or at all.

Or maybe I’m wrong, only they can answer that.

Again, what?

Do you think the Flyers valued the 2025 1st rounder that has a small, but a chance nonetheless, of being a 2026 1st more than a 2024 1st?

It's funny that you guys are talking about Johansen as a cap dump when that's not at all how the Flyers are viewing him. They (or at least the guy in charge of this whole franchise) see him as positive value.

In other words: Torts has his Frost replacement.

Fitting in with their usual only-half-in strategy of "rebuilding", they are both buyers and sellers at this deadline.

I know I'm a stickler for trade value, and I don't think the value is good here, but I will give them kudos for at least acknowledging they are not true contenders by selling off their biggest expiring piece. I don't believe in going in halfway so I would have sold off Seeler also, but I want to be at least a little positive since I expected them to make zero moves.

Torts doesn't like Johansen or at least he didn't in the past.

When Columbus pushes its 2nd-2024 to a 2nd-2025, it gives the Flyers two 1sts this year, zero 2nds (so far) and then two 1sts and three 2nds in 2025.

Would be nice to make another deal to get a 2nd this year. I still can't believe what they gave up to get D'Angelo.

Correction: As per Alex, Flyers have 2nd rounder in 2024, #51, as compensation for JOB not signing.

Torts may dislike Johansen more than Frost.

Unless we hear otherwise, yes. It won’t work with Florida’s pick, but we already have that this year, so I’ll take the chance that the Colorado pick is like 21st next year instead of 29th this year.

Youse all, and I, want a rebuild. You don’t need all the picks in one draft.
