He certainly never was a big time prospect and he was definitely over hyped on the Habs board.

It definitely got him hype around here but that is not the same as the statement that he was a "big time" prospect. These are very different statements with only the former being true.

He also got the call to the Olympics and Worlds.
He wasnt an A prospect but he was a Hopeful B prospect.

"Big time prospect" can be interpreted many ways but he was clearly one of monteal's top prospects at one time.
I don't recall anyone saying he was a slam dunk but he had some impressive accomplishments for his resume at a young age

I mean I don't know what the surprise is. He swapped places in the lineup with Davidson and kidney and with their minutes from last year he's producing the same way they did. It's clear the new coach isn't a fan the same way Leblanc got pushed down in Hamilton before.
It's up to Farrell to prove he deserves a chair. More likely he is traded in a prospect swap but if he can't handle AHL diversity he's not going to be an NHLer.
Leblanc retired rather than put in the work.
Davidson has a better motor so it's hard to say he should lose his spot now. Farrell kind of has to learn the defensive side and improve his skating and wait for an injury.

True, but being a top NCAA player most definitely does qualify as top prospect. He would have got a contract from every team in the league if he wasn't drafted.

Someone brought up Corey Locke, great comparison. Charles Hudon produced a lot in junior and AHL, was he a top NHL prospect? Matheson produces a lot of points as a dman, is he a top NHLer?
Stats don't tell the whole story. Most people here, myself include, don't watch tons of junior/college games, and we don't know much about these guys.
As far as I'm concerned, Farrell never had what it takes in terms of physical ability to be considered a top NHL prospect. Weak, slow, weak shot. He is extremely smart, though, which allowed him to make it in college against similar-level players.
He can probably make a nice career for himself in Europe, but I doubt many NHL teams would trade for him right now. Except if they need AHL help.

That is an egregiously incorrect assertion.
Being a top NCAA scorer has been irrelevant in so many cases over the years with respect to being a top NHL prospect. Getting a contract and being a top prospect are two entirely different things.
Farrell was exclusively over hyped on this board and was not a big deal anywhere else. That is not to say that he was not an interesting prospect but no team would have at any point traded anything significant to acquire him from us. He was and is a dart toss who was never likely to be an impactful NHLer.
His brain has always been intriguing but he is tiny and a below average skater and was always a longshot. I am not entirely writing him off as a future NHLer but I do not see a future in Montreal for Farrell

Hopefully, management also learns the lesson and trades these kind of players when they have some value. Guys like Farrell, Mešár, Kidney are not bottom 6 players. I mean we traded useful RHD NHLer in Kovacevic for 4th round pick. At some time, we could have the same by trading Farrell or Kidney.

Farrell is a victim of having too many players in the AHL. He's not a bad prospect and there's clearly NHL potential there. With that said the decision by the management to run with 8+ NHL hopeful at forward is killing the potential of many.

Nah, Farrell just isn't good.
He and Roy started off hot last year, but then both cooled down and Farrell has shown very little.
It's not even like he's creating things and his linemates can't finish, he's just not doing much.
Jared Davidson played bottom 6 minutes last year and would at least create somethings, or be noticeable.
Edit: just went through some lined and he's been listed to start on the 2nd line the games I've watched this year and nothing.
He gets 2nd PP usage, or better, too.

Didn’t expect him to not even have any sort of impact in AHL after he looked fine among fringe NHL caliber in those tournaments…
Instead of recycling coaches, we recycle 4th round picks.

No organizations just say, hey this guy was one of the best players in the NCAA, this guy was one of the best players in the Q, and this guy was destroying his competition on weak squads during best on best international tournaments and leading the OHL in play-off scoring as a 1st round pick.. let's just try to get a mid round pick back on them, rather than bring them into the organization and give them time to develop and see if we can improve their weaknesses, build on their strengths and make players out of them.
They made 10 picks last draft.
9 picks in 2023
11 picks in 2022.
They have 12 picks in 2025.
9 picks in 2026.
They don't need more picks, they need organizational depth and homegrown players in the system.

Well, you only have six top 6 spots with Habs team they can fight for and we already have Slaf, Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Newhook, Laine with the team and Roy, Demidov, Hage in the pipeline. None of Farrell, Mešár or Kidney is even close to their potential. In Laval, I want to develop guys like Beck, Davidson, Tuch, Xhekaj. Give them some top 6 vets to support.

Plus, who would have told you that Carter Verhaege would become a legit star forward? If he was in our system you'd have advocated for him to be traded for a mid round pick, as well.
You bring those guys in and develop them, they get their opportunities and then get phased down if they don't win those jobs.
Mesar being included is even more silly since he's been PPG in his first 5 games in the AHL, as if that isn't worth developing as a previous first round pick?

Verhaege is 6-2 and was a team captain with 82 points in his last junior year. There was a potential he cold be a very good bottom 6 player. None of those three is similar to that.
I like they changed their drafting strategy last couple years drafitng big bodies like Sawyer, Thorpe, F.Xhekaj and keep skill guys to later rounds (Khanin, Eriksson).

Farrell and Kidney never had any trade value and were more valuable as potential quality AHLers who still had a chance to see their development explode.

Disagree. If you 30 teams want you, you're a top prospect. Doesn't mean anything along the lines of being a sure thing or even close. Under HF's old system, he was always a "D". But he'd have been a high number. Probably like an 7.5-8.0 D.

Corey Locke is nothing like him except producing as a prospect and being small. I was a big fan of Locke growing up. But Locke was a terrible, terrible skater in an era that still hadn't fully shifted from clutch and grab.
Locke would have had a lot better chance of making it in the NHL in this day and age.
