Prospect Info: Sean Farrell, C/LW, 124th Overall

I can still have an opinion after just one game. lol.

I might eat crow on it, I might not. I hope I do. I just think he's further away from being an effective NHLer than I thought he was. I've been high on Farrell for a while, he's one of my favorite prospects in the organization.
Lets see how he does on a line with Dach. In all fairness, there isn't a crappier center in the NHL than Drouin.

My take after the first game is he's gonna need more than just a short amount of time to try to configure his game to contribute at the NHL level with his combination of skating and size.

He didn't really make any glaring mistakes, but he didn't do a lot with the puck on his stick. Time will be needed on the farm.
More then that 13 mins he got last night you mean?

Quite generous of you :naughty:

Don’t think anyone here thought he’d finish with a 3 point night.

It’s 1 game….give 5-6 games and this will be a fair sample to see what’s what.

I’m FULLY expecting him to start the season in Laval next year, maybe soend 2yrs there…..that’s my expectation. Anything more is gravy

Decent game by the Kid. He's going to be physically challenged though. I'm always going to worry about guys like him and Caufield and Evans who like to be involved in the play. It just takes one POS to set you back a pace.

Played much better tonight, aggression was at NHL pace, more aware of the bigger bodies and reading plays. I expect he'll be in Laval to start next year unless KH can ship 4 guys out (hope so). But I also suspect he ends the year in the show if he improves at the rate he has consistently improved at since he was drafted.
Smart/skilled and isnt afraid of the physicality he'll face. Lots to look forward to and will be fun to watch the rest of the year.

Agree with you on pretty much all levels here.

One thing to consider though is the team is going to use these remaining 6 games to evaluate him very closely. If he can play at the level he played at last night, I don’t see him being a target to be AHL bound for next season.

When you compare him today to say Caufield at the time of his debut, Farrell is a more complete player. He’s the same age Cole was half way through last year. No, he isn’t as dynamic or as much of a scoring threat (few are) but his hockey IQ and defensive abilities are the main arguments to say he may not benefit too much from AHL time. Generally speaking, players that are quick learners and have good situational awareness don’t require much/if any AHL seasoning because they’re better off simply adjusting to the challenge at the highest level right off the bat.

He’ll also benefit from a full offseason and training camp where the org. will once again be paying attention and making a decision that should benefit both parties.

I expect KH will be making a flurry of moves this year at the draft and throughout the offseason to add a bit more of his own touch to the roster now that he’s had a full season to evaluate his team and prospects. He’s not going to hold back Farrell for journeymen or lesser prospects if it’s not in the teams best interest.

For the first time in decades, I actually believe in the management and direction this team is under.

The next couple weeks of hockey plus the offseason work to be done will be a huge factor. Im hoping hes in MTL to start next year just alot of moving pieces that need to happen. Excitinggggggg though

Forget about the goal last night. Nice for him to get his 1st goal though. The key here is eye test and how he stands out. He had a great game using his skating and that was his 1st game in Montreal so I like how he stepped up. Good signs.

I liked the intensity and puck management. Being able to step up like that in his 2nd game shows me he has good hockey IQ.

Was the best player on the squad tonight.
That’s a case of damning him with the faintest of praise. Last night the team really looked like a team worthy of a first overall pick in the draft.

As for Farrell, he showed excellent on-ice vision for a player playing in only his second NHL game against a far superior and heavier opponent. Farrell also showed an element of explosiveness in addition to his superior quickness. While I have little doubt that Farrell will play and ultimately succeed in the NHL, I wonder if Montreal can afford the luxury of having two very undersized size forwards ( Farrell and Caufield) playing in their top six. It would not surprise me if Farrell continues to improve that he becomes a valuable trading commodity for the team as it continues to shore up other parts of its roster.

His defensive habits and smarts translated pretty well. He's gonna have a long career in the NHL because of his tools offensively and his ability to be on the plus side in all 3 zones.

Yes. He is going to be a really good player. Much better 2nd game than his 1st game. He show all his potential. He is going to be a really good PP player aswell with his high hockey IQ.

Ondrej Palat comparison is very very accurate.

Really cool breakdown of the little small things he did on the breakout, how he positioned his body, the moment of the stick lift, etc..

A really really smart player. He will be an NHL regular 100%.

Yeah, when he is going to be confortable at NHL level, he will show his high offensive talent. Already see good progressing after 1 game. After 20 NHL games, he will be much more fun to watch at offensive zone. Hands, shot, passing ability... needs time, but he have high potential.

I think Caufield can help him to become a better dynamic offensive player aswell, they will have great chemistry if they play on same PP unit.

Was coming to post this.. a lot of hockey enjoyers might miss the subtle things that Farrell does out there. Happy that Han made this video to kind of show-case these things.

Farrell is not the fastest straight line skater, but he does these little movements and high IQ moves to create space.

His skating is looking just about pro average for me at this point. It helps that his hockey IQ is good enough to allow him to anticipate where he needs to be a lot of the time. He certainly hasn't been behind the play a lot in his first 2 games.
