Prospect Info: Sean Farrell, C/LW, 124th Overall

FWIW,
Pierre McGuire scouting report on Farrell:

- Electrifying speed and exceptional creativity
- good 2 way player, can kill penalties
- Weakness: not good at board play

I wouldn't say he has electrifying speed, it's something for someone his size he could stand to improve upon. His board play isn't bad either for someone his size, he will battle and often win.

Agreed.. hope we don't win the lottery, wouldn't want a 5'10" player who's really good at hockey.
To be fair, there really is only one guy in that rarefied air so size is not a consideration.

Also, as we’ve seen with our drafting of Caufield and Hutson, too many NHL GMs will continue to shun elite talent on account of size — which only means that players of that ilk should continue to slip to us and we’re certainly not going to pass up on big time talents like them just because of size.

How much of a factor do you think size will be in the case of where Mishkov gets drafted.

I'm assuming Fantelli will go number 2 because of size. But will be interesting to see if other bigger players are also prefered.

Michkov has (if online values are to be believed) the same height as Bedard and nobody is wondering if Bedard is going to drop because of his size...

This draft year look shorter than last year on average. There is a lot of 5'10'', so teams will still go for the best ones, they won't reach for a 6'+ guy who is ranked in the 2nd round in the top 10 because the talent is short this year.

Size is not a consideration for a talent like Michkov, IMHO. It’s all about the thorny, on going geopolitical disaster, his level of commitment toward his homeland beyond 2026 (since he’s signed there up to that point), whether he might even be able to leave when his contract will be up and to a lesser extent, the lack of in person, scout viewings (there is ample video data).

Without all of these factors at play, in a normal setting, he could have been expected to leave the board right after Bedard or have given Fantilli a serious run for his money.

I expect a lot of teams to want the bird in hand and to be risk averse with high picks however that risk will be mitigated the further down the draft board we go. How far down that might be, is where the action will be. Some team is going to end up with a great player despite not holding a top pick.

He won't be able to be called up at all if he's on an AHL deal to finish the year in Laval.

So 1 down and 4 to go.

Farrell out.

Dobes, Pitlick, Hutson & Tuch still left.
Does it matter that he wouldn’t be able to be called up if he were signed to play in Laval? Habs have nothing to play for anyway.

If he’s signed to a Struble-like deal, won’t he have burned one year of ELC regardless? Might as well help Laval at this point.

No, strubles elc starts next year so he doesn't burn a year

Which of our prospects do you like?

Let the Farrell watch begin.

I wonder if he'll be in uniform Monday or Tuesday. Given we have 3 game in 4 nights and so we won't be practicing much, he may. Ot play in these 3 games, and only debut at the end if the week.

There's no way. I don't expect him to sign before Sunday, or even Monday or Tuesday. Then he needs to get here and practice with the team. They're not going to throw him in cold.

Probably doesn't play til next weekend at earliest.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Detroit on April 4th. Home game versus a pretty weak team with 5 games left.

I think he'll sign some time this weekend or on monday. Come join the team and have a full week of training. First game with the Habs would probably be at the Bell Centre vs Detroit in a little more than a week.

ELC duration are based on age, so no, Struble is just at the age where it last two years.
Just saw that he’ll go the 3-year ELC unlike Struble, on account of his age, as you suggested. He’ll be with the Habs and it’ll be a deal where he’ll burn his first year of ELC:

With Sean Farrell being one of the top prospects in both the NCAA and the Montreal Canadiens prospect pool, it’s very likely that the Canadiens will have to burn the first year of his contract to sign him right away and have him join the Canadiens. …

Another factor to consider is, unlike Harris and Struble, Farrell will have to sign a three-year deal out of college.

Both Harris and Struble were eligible for two-year ELCs because they were to turn 22 before September 15 in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Because of that, the NHL considers the player 22 years of age upon signing, which limits them to a two-year deal; as opposed to the usual three-year deal.

In Farrell’s case, he only turns 22 in November, meaning that he would be classified as a 21-year-old if he were to sign this spring; making him eligible for a three-year deal.

Given the term distinction for Farrell, it would make complete sense to offer him the opportunity to burn the first year of his three-year ELC to entice him to make the jump to the NHL; as it would speed up the process.

Correct. But I was replying to someone who thought that he can be signed to an AHL deal to help Laval but be called up on an emergency basis. To which I answered that they wouldn't be able to call him up if he's signed to an AHL deal.

Farrell and the Harvard team were there when Thrun signed his contract.
