Prospect Info: Sean Farrell, C/LW, 124th Overall

Is Farrell better than Cooley ?
3 year age gap. Not fair to compare at this stage.

This guy is the first out our flurry of mid round darts to actually hit , it was bound to happen at some point.

This is the kind of player that can play on any team , he will find a role whatever you need him for.

Very optimistic and excited about him

I think he is a type that is top 6F or bust. Not sure he will fit in the bottom 6F but I guess if you had a strong top 9, he would be OK on the 3rd line and one of the PP units.

I don't hate undersized players but if you want to win a cup, you can only have so many of them in the mix. Hard to ignore his offensive production so far though. Lets see how he looks when he turns pro. It will be his biggest development hurdle. What I do like is the sample size performing well in international play and in the NCAA against men. It's a good sign.

In the modern NHL you can have player like him even in your bottom 6 , think a player like Kerfoot who can slide anywhere the line up

Kerfoot is not the player the Leafs need to win a cup though. Leafs should have never traded Kadri for Kerfoot and Barrie. Not the player they need in their bottom 6 or on D.

I'm not saying Farrell is no good for us but if he makes it, I hope he is a dynamic top 6F. If he is on the 3rd line, I would hope we have a strong top 9 and he gets his extra ice time on the PP.

I would not use the Leafs depth and bottom 6F as good examples bud

Has nothing to do with their depth , im talking about a specific player .

Dont wanna say Kerfoot is his "floor" but hopefully it is.

Yes but you replied to how Farrell fits in a cup contention roster type narrative.
It was more in the sense of him being a swiss army type of player. I do think you can win a cup with a guy like Kerfoot but thats for another discussion.

Lets not derail the thread shall we ;)

I'm not a fan of Kerfoot. It's the Leafs version of David D. If I had the Leafs roster, I would want my bottom 6 to be big and fast. Kerfoot is fast but can and will get out muscled for the puck in the playoffs.

Farrell doesn’t compare to Kerfoot. What he wanted to say is that Farrell is not a top 6 or bust because he’s smaller… he can play in all situations

I know what he is saying. I like Farrell a lot as a prospect but I have high expectations in terms of building a cup contender. Hold your horses with he can play in all situations. For now, enjoy his NCAA performance and let him focus on improving in those areas you are talking about. But once he turns pro, that's when we really know what we got.

is it just me or does this kid just keep getting noticeably better all the time?

I might be too bullish on him but I think there's low end star potential.

I've gotten wrong so much on here but I can feel good in saying that I thought this kid looked more impressive than Mysak soon after that draft.

He was drafted as a playmaking winger but in that D+1 (even though he was an USHL overager) he seemed to show a pretty impressive shot. Good to see that's continuing. Shifty, damn fine passer. Complimentary top 6 winger seems very attainable and would be very welcome.

Man we could be scary in a couple seasons

Well it's looking like we have 4 top 6 forwards for sure so far: Caufield, Suzuki, Dach, Slaf.

Would be nice if 2 more are from among Farrell, Beck, Mesar, Heneman and Roy. Plus Guidon, rohrer, and Kidney are long shots.

No, it's not just you.

The kid was a really good bet when and where we got him. The hockey IQ and skill package were apparent but the size and skating wasn't optimal. He's continued to improve his skating (I'd argue he's always had really really good agility and edgework which allows smaller players to succeed in the pros even if the straight line speed is there) and he's shown such a willingness to work and get better defensively to the point he's a high-end defensive forward in the Worlds, Olympics and NCAA levels.

He's been unreal this year. Scoring in all 3 phases.

I'm gonna be a broken record but Farrell-Beck is going to create a line that will be considered a better version of the Gallagher-Danault-Tatar line in which they can shut down the other teams top line and create 5 on 5, control shot share and tilt the ice 5 on 5.

I’d like to think if we draft a guy like Fantilli/Carlsson our top 6 could look like

Caufield-Fantilli/Carlsson-Dach
Farrell-Suzuki-Slafkovsky

Or something like that

They'll need a good 3rd wheel. What made Danault Gallay Tatar great was that all 3 were in their prime and were good players and complemented each other well.

Maybe Skaf. Mesar is too small, given Farrell's height. I'm not sure Heineman has the puck skills. Maybe Joshua Roy, if he can improve his speed.
