Prospect Info: Sean Farrell, C/LW, 124th Overall

Toffoli too…..Hockey smarts can bring you a long way!

I just spewed out names that instantly popped into my head there as there are so many examples of average to poor skaters becoming stars and an enormous list of strong skaters who busted. Eric Daze is another example of a horrendous skater who made significant improvements to his skating until his back failed him. I could go on and on if I gave this any thought at all.

I am a huge proponent for drafting speed when possible as every scout is, it just isn't black and white like the earlier poster was suggesting.

Its not hard, if a player is a weak skater, you don't take him in the first or seventh round. Let some other team hope he develops the one elemental skill necessary to play successfully in the NHL today.
With this mentality so many late round steals would never have been drafted. You look for guys who have 1 tool that could lead them to the NHL and build around that. Skating is definitely very important, but there are other tools you can build an NHL player around.

Farrell seems like the real deal. Guy just piles up points wherever he goes. I remember the knock on him in the draft (besides size) was that he played with that stacked U18 US team and then dominated a low level league. But now the guy is producing in college and even the Olympics. Could definitely be a major steal.

And some will... You're not trying to take the most complete 18 year old, you're trying to predict who will be the best player at 23. It's voodoo and there are no hard rules. It's hard to even determine the degree of randomness. There are fewer late picks that work out, so scouting is improving, but it's far from perfect.

If only Mete had been more than just a good skater...

He could be a steal but I real think size was the issue. It remains to be seen if he can compensate. Physicality is a key parameter in the NHL. I like his offensive IQ (like with Caufield) and his hands but if you can‘t keep the puck / have a hard time defending, it may keep you out of the lineup. I hope he shows that he can be a good player overall in spite of his size.

He’s not a tiny tot like Caufield and is able to compete in the tough areas. I like his game a lot. Wish he had a breakaway 5th gear but other wise he’s got a great skill set. Might end up more of a PP type but the talent is there to be that at least.

173cm vs 170cm, i.e. 5‘8 vs 5‘7, kind of the same. But some small players like Martin Saint Louis have had an impact so not out of the realm of possible that he does, just saying it is definitely a handicap IMO.

I hear Caufield is really 4'11". I don't know how true that is, but he keeps getting shorter every time somebody speaks about him...
I’m not dissing the guy lol

Farrell is more typical small NHLer size at 5’9”. Caufield could be the shortest guy in the league.

At 18, Farrell got 56 points in 45 games in the USHL on a loaded team. At 18, this year, Roy has 55 points in 30 games on a team Q long time journalist Stéphane Leroux saw finishing last in its division this year.

If I'm honest, I didn't see Farell play that much, who got the biggest chance to become a really good top 6 player in the NHL, Farell or Roy ?

Roy has hella impressive but so has Farrell against men.

At this point Roy and Farrell have a really good chance to become great top 6 player in NHL.

Ylonen, Roy and Farrell have all qualities for a top 6 player, if they can reach their potential, Habs are in a really good hands with these players.
