Confirmed with Link: Scott Arniel named Winnipeg Jets head coach

That I agree with.
But that would have been a change from the results Bones was getting and so might have actually been meaningful.

But a short stretch as a fill in, where nothing was changed and where the record was similar to the before and after periods really doesn't mean squat. You are free to value it if you like.
We also don't know exactly how much input Arniel had in the teams systems and playstyle.

We believe that the plan all along was Bones as a culture stopgap guy with Arniel taking over. If that's true, wouldn't it make sense to integrate Scott in along the way?

It’s ok Chipper and Cheveldayoff are happy just to make the playoffs. They have said it and the players know it.

Yea it’s tough for me to gleam much from Chevy when he does his cryptic politician speak with the media, but I do sense he is legit proud of how many times they have made the playoffs. He is very measured, layering in the good with how tough it is to win the playoffs, and with a 1/4 teaspoon of we want to get better. He gets paid allot and has a way of coming off as the voice of reason while downplaying just how dismal his team is come playoff time. All we know for sure up to this point is his core is not built for playoff hockey.

It’s a tough league to make major changes in especially when your boss is hyper focused on winning now to sell tickets today.

Sure.
But it doesn't affect evaluating Arniel on his stretch as a fill-in either one way or another. The team played the same way during that time. Same systems. Same everything. Same results, more or less.

Arniel is the HC now. Evaluate him on what he does and what results he gets going forward.

I realize that people will interpret comments differently, but whenever Chevy has said that about the playoffs, I've taken it as "this is the minimum we expect every year"

I've never heard him say that they're happy with that and don't care if they actually win a cup, which is what gets insinuated around here

People insinuate that because the team doesn't want to rebuild and have 12k fans in the stands for the 7 or 8 years it'll take for all the potential draft picks to maybe all hit at the same time.

Unfortunately these playoffs are showing me that our core of very good players , Scheifele , Connor , Ehlers , Vilardi , Morrissey and Helly need to all be way better come playoffs.
yup. helle is the biggest choker of them all, followed up by ehlers.

Until i see alot better from them come playoffs i would have to agree and that really, really sucks . These are talented hockey players we are talking about at least in the regular season anyway.

We absolutely need a top 2 defenseman and a top 4 defenseman both who can move the puck and defend in our zone . Not easy to trade for or for Winnipeg to sign as free agents . We also need a top 2 center and another good physical winger. Not going to be easy to do that's for sure.

With massive trade value. Could basically retool the team from the haul you would get. Likely still a playoff team to boot.
I would trade Helly if we at least had a good goalie in our system close to coming in but we don't so it would be very hard to trade him away. If we did we could have a good team with no goaltending .

Depends on your defensive game. Vegas won with a bunch of stiffs.

Yeah for all the talk about Hellebuyck's choke job this team is in the tank for the last number of years without him.
I absolutely agree without Helly in the past few regular seasons we probably don't, doesn't take away from the fact he needs to be better in the playoffs though.

That was a team choke job honestly, that Helle shares a part of. You can't give up an average of 36 shots a game and expect to win. You can't be a solid shutdown team in the regular season and then just completely stop doing that the moment you hit the playoffs.

I don't think they really need much to be honest. I would rather they replenish they draft picks then bring in mediocre talent to replace anyone

What they need is to play there system when the time comes in the playoffs and not get away from it. That was the most disappointing thing I saw. They didn't elevate the system and they paid the price for it.

They need to figure out what they are going to do with Ehlers. Sign him long term or trade him but I think they have to do it this Summer and before the draft.

They need to figure out what they are going to do with the Defense. Looks like Dillon is walking but they better sign DeMelo. I would buy out Schmidt if your Boss says you can and then I would likely start looking at Cap strapped teams for a useful D man.

I know they would love to win a cup.

To me I don’t sense he feels making the playoffs is the “minimum they expect”. I think he sells it as very hard to do and therefore we are proud of how often we have reached the playoffs. That was “the” prevalent message in his heated presser after the Vegas embarrassment and the Bones melt down. Kevin was fairly defending the Jets record vs the other Canadian teams since the return. He was correctly pointing out how tough it is to win in NHL.

Now I know everyone wants to win it all and Kevin and Mark are no different but to me it sounded like they were sincere that making the playoffs was the priority. Now I think I would put selling tickets just as high for Mark but those go hand in hand.

Perhaps we are just debating semantics here. I think Kevin wants to do everything he can to ice a competitive team year in year out, and Mark wants to fill the building always so they have long term viability and can compete. Remaining competitive is always going to be the goal and the rest is gravy.

Helly has a full NMC for several more years and hasn’t even started his new contract yet. He will rightly retire a Jet.

I think they have to be conscious of speed though. As @Whileee says, it's a speed league and through a bunch of individually good moves, we've become quite a slow team.

Lots of teams, Chevy's Blackhawks included, used to use a young line as an energy line. Having Chib and Lambo as 4th liners for half a year, with Names or Gus, could be a good way to break them in. That could move Barron's speed up the lineup, for one, maybe the finn too (damn vascular dementia).
