Now that I have had a few minutes for this to sink in, I can find at least a couple of ”glass half full” takeaways to this situation.

First, having these two out of the lineup for at least a month gives us an opportunity to extend the tank and improve the value of our pick.

Finally, as Brian alluded to, these are far from catastrophic injuries and keeping them out of the lineup for the next few weeks will prevent them from getting hurt even worse.
I have to admit I'm a little worried that this will end up being addition by subtraction.

How long before Leddy and Parayko get hurt and Tucker and Kessel are playing full time minutes?

Also does it feel very strange that both of these players are injured at the exact same time?

So absorb the cap yourself? If all you want is picks back, you can eat some cap. This team is going nowhere and everyone knew it and now their top 2 returns are banged up. The Blues could easily absorb 50% of these cap hits and it would likely bring back an even bigger haul by doing so. If Stillman truly wants to be a good owner he needs to look at the bigger picture and that bigger picture means limiting how long a rebuild/tool takes. This dumb decision by Armstrong has just potentially added 2 or 3 more years to a retool because of his pathetic hope of this garbage team turning things around.

This season was over as soon as they went on a second prolonged losing streak. They look terrible almost every night, they find ways to lose, even win they win its hard to watch because they play such lousy hockey and are extremely unlikeable. It is like trying to root for a awful heel in WWF. I truly dislike this roster and team more than any other in Blues history and I blame Armstrong for gutting all the chemistry and likeability they had.
It’s things like this why you’re consistently not taken seriously here. Go ahead, go to capfriendly and see which teams that would be likely candidates to trade for ROR or Tarasenko have the cap space to add either, even with the Blues retaining 50%. Then go back and do it at the numbers they would’ve been a month ago…since it would’ve been easy a month ago according to you.

There’s a reason why teams typically do t add players until the deadline - so they can maximize their cap space the most. Even if someone could afford to add one of those guys today, if they wait, they could potentially add that player AND maybe then have the space to add another small piece as well. Or give themselves more flexibility with call-ups after the trade deadline.

And actually, there’s another reason why they wait as well - some don’t know if they’re buyers or sellers yet. The market of who’s available and who may want to trade for this available players isn’t really solidified until closer to the deadline.

There are two ways to look at this
1- This shows us just how bad we can be without them, giving us a better draft pick
2- If they're dragging the team down, we'll find out quick, and hopefully it solidifies DA trading both and getting something in return instead of letting them walk for nothing.

We are picking top 10 with them, imagine next year without them. Top 5?

As for the ROR and Tarasenko injuries I have two trains of thoughts:
1. I'm really hoping the timelines for their returns hold, and they get some games back before the deadline to maintain their value. This could be much more impactful for years to come if their value tanks.

2. We get a chance to really see what the team will essentially look like next season give or take a few minor additions and subtractions. If we manage to stay in this playoff bubble range of 3-5 points out, I really hope that Armstrong doesn't go into a thought of "ROR and Tarasenko will be our deadline rental acquisitions".

The Blues played their best hockey last season during the covid stretch but that was only because of Chuckie coming in and changing the mindset and work ethic of the team. Husso then came in and relieved Chuckie for the majority of the season after that.

Will be hilarious to see the Blues win ten of twelve with 90 and 91 now sidelined. You'd think removing talent would aid the tank, but removing malcontents may just inspire the guys who want to be here to get used to the idea that this is their team now. If either guy has played their last game as Blues, so be it.
I wouldn't be upset about that, so long as Army doesn't use that bounce as a reason not to sell 90 or 91.

For me, the "tank" is much more about acquiring assets out of our expiring contracts than it is about our finish in the standings. Chicago, Anaheim and Columbus are too bad to "catch" considering they are already 13+ points back of us. I think San Jose is uncatchable as well. They sit 6 points back from us with 2 extra games played and they might be selling Meier. I'm not sold that Karlsson has another 40 games at a 110 point pace in him, so I think that they have a lower gear to reach in the near future. I don't see us finishing worse than 28th (which gives you a 17% chance at a top 4 pick) and realistically we will finish ahead of Philly, Montreal, and/or Arizona.

The extra 5-10% chance at snagging one of the top studs in this draft by finishing 5th worst instead of 10th worst just isn't as valuable to me as making sure we fill the cupboards with futures assets. And playing some meaningful hockey with a roster comprised of our existing young talent has some value that offsets the worst draft odds as well.

I'd love to see this team have a real shot at Bedard or Fantilli in the draft lottery. But I won't be mad if the short-and-medium term core shows some resilience and refuses to tank. So long as we still sell the guys who won't be here next season for quality assets, that will be okay with me.

It is strange that O’rielly and Vlad are both hurt at the same time, almost as if the hockey gods are mocking the Blues or something lol.

What is Phil McRae up to these days? Surely he'd be able to compete with the likes of Nathan Walker, Alexei Toropchenko, Tyler Pitlick & Logan Brown if he's stayed in game shape, right?

The kicker is I've read they're both to be re-evaluated at the 4 and 6 week mark - not expected to be back at that mark.

They could easily be hurt past the TDL.

Could anyone correct me if I am wrong? I thought in the draft the most you could move up was 3 draft spots? So if we finish outside of top 4 we can't take #1 in the lottery?

Teams ranked worst to 11th worst can win the lottery and pick 1st. 12-16 have limitations. Worst team can pick no later than 3rd. Basically, we don’t want to be in the 12-16 range. Can’t move up more than 10 spots. So, 12-14 still wouldn’t be bad if we somehow won the lottery.

Bummer about ROR and Vova. Probably seals the season outcome and solidifies selling at the TDL. Still curious to see how the rest of the team responds and how Neighbours looks after his AHL stint.

or he could have traded them a month ago, not like this team has shown they are anything different than what they showed in october and november. armstrong has mishandled the entire offseason starting with his obsession to resign leddy and keeping mikkola. Then he shafted perron and chuckie.

now he holds onto people and hopes his team will magically flip a switch when we all see what our eyes are watching every game. this team is pathetic and hopeless and the trades should have been flying after the 2nd long losing streak.

i bet both of these people take longer than the 4/6 weeks for each respectively. and with our luck, they will hold on to barbashev and he will get hurt in late Feb. this dude just f***ed our short and long term outlooks in the matter of 6 months. He has downgraded EVERY position this offseason.

the worst thing of all is our high 2nd round pick is going to detroit now too because he just had to get Leddy for a second and resign him with Perron's money. If he had half a brain he would have moved these guys out a month ago and try to tank for a top 3 pick. Now we will get nothing for them and slow our rebuild by another 2 or 3 years. Armstrong is a overrated clown.

If the Blues are going to play better hockey and pick up points in the next 2 months (LOL), it starts with their goaltenders playing superb (AKA not leaving the net and giving a team 2 free goals in crucial divisional games) and strong PK/PP. You win with a crappy AHL roster by checking the other team hard 24/7 and having your special teams and goaltender be the difference.

None of those things will be happening as Binner checked out as we all saw last game. Their PK is the worst in the league and their PP is just OK and just OK is not good enough when you have as many issues as this team does.
So many words to scroll past and not read

For now I'm choosing to be hopeful that both subscribe to the Toropchenko type of recovery timeline.

My focus is the tank and this helps it imo, sure the replacements could play well but odds are they won't be nearly as effective as 90/91 and we'll probably lose even more which is great. I'll be visiting Tankathon's mock draft simulator after every set of games looking for us to lose our way into the top 8.
