I also wonder how last offseason plays into this and with a lack of a clear role, Dubas is trying to sell high

If he got benched during the playoffs (which is likely) his trade value would likely take a hit.

Interestingly, Gustafsson has too many points for the team to probably just let sit as the #7 D. So I wonder if he's out the door soon too. Unless the aleafs really just value how cheap he is

The most obvious move ever after the McCabe acquisition. Knowing this happened now though I'm rather annoyed we didn't use Sandin as an asset to try to get us Meier. Sandin plus the ROR deal is basically as much as NJ offered.

We can’t afford Meier and trading for Meier is incredibly risky. If he shits the bed, you won’t get a great package when it comes time to flip him. I’m glad we stayed clear of Meier, made no sense for our team.

Seems like a really weak return for a young NHL quality Damn, though, particularly one that's trending towards top-4.

Probably yeah. One signed into next year too. But at least they sold relatively high on him rather than wait until after the playoffs. Gustafsson is having a pretty good season.

We better flip that first for something of value. Losing Sandin absolutely sucks considering how well he has played in the last two years. Kinda sad that he never gained the trust of the coaching staff despite excelling in whatever role was assigned to him.

Bullshit. Absolutely hate this. God forbid you move Kerfoot. God forbid you move Engvall. God forbid you not only don't move Holl, but you take him out of a top four role.
To be fair, Sandin lost us 2 games vs MTL on his own because of skating. I really like him, I think he has tons of upside and a long career as a top 4 D. But only way I can make sense of this trade is, his poor skating made him the odd-man out. We had to move a contract, the LD was log jammed after acquiring McCabe, some people were predicting this, I was hoping we kept him but what can you do.

This doesn’t seem like a Dubas trade. I think we all knew the eventual Sandin trade request was coming but I was expecting him to be part of a larger move like Chychrun.

I'm okay with this.

Thought if Sandin was gonna be moved it'd be in something bigger.

Surprised at this move for sure

So close to getting Jensen, and yet so far now.......

I'm not married to Sandin, and it's not Friday after TDL yet, but if all of Holl/Engvall/Kerfoot are still here I'm going to be displeased.......

...... but will remember the great pieces that Dubas did add in the past 2 weeks, and relish that we kept Knies, Niemala and our other top prospects.

Go Leafs Go!

Whoa

I dont think Sandin has more upside than a 3-4 dman but still pretty surprised here. I remember he was unhappy not playing much last summer, I guess McCabe pushed him out

He’ll be alright but I don’t think he will be a franchise changing defenseman.
