Sandin can't play RD and LD is full so no where for him to go on Leafs roster except the bench to sulk or on the phone with his agent. Good player with good potential but would have been a distraction in the playoffs and a mess in the off-season. Dubas recouped his original draft pick (29th overall in 2018 entry draft).

Wonder if we flip the pick for another piece up front. A power winger to slot next to either Tavares or O'Reilly (with Knies slotting in with the other guy), would give us three big time lines.

An odd trade at first glance, but became clearer that Sandin likely was not going to slot ahead of McCabe, Gio and Rielly.

Getting a 1st gives the team a chance to get a similarly valued prospect, and Gustafsson has had a strangely good season in an offensive role with 38 points so far.

Always liked Sandin so a bit sad to see him go.

Also I won't be surprised if both assets are still traded yet again before the tdl..... So who knows what's going on

If I had to guess:

Sandin if you remember held out in the off season and the reason was because of playing time. He's been yo-yoed in and out of the lineup for the last three seasons. And he really only solidified a spot this year because Muzzin was out.

Jake McCabe is an LD, signed for another year and pushes him out of the lineup again so he saw the writing on the wall and privately asked to be traded.

He doesn't quite fit anywhere on the team anymore. He's been tried on the right side with and it hasn't worked out so he's not gonna be a Holl replacement.

I'm sad to see him go but I understand it from his POV, it's for the good of his career.

He's a good PPQB but is soft and not great in his own zone at all.



Unless he's here to run PP1 then I don't get why we got him

We should've aimed higher in a sandin deal. Forget the 1st round pick, would've been better getting an equivalent forward who could play in the top 9 to push kerfoot down

and now McCabe he’s tough to find a role.

Plus he has had injury issues and I’m concerned about his size and speed affecting his potential.

Nice to recoup a 1st though.

If the play is ROR at 3C, then he’s gonna need somewhat solid wingers like jarnkrok, can’t play him with engvall and Kerfoot
