Its a deep draft, we’ll have to see who we pick using Bostons 1st before we can really judge the trade.

Gustafsson has been...below average/out of sorts/hacker.

I have yet to see anything that Dubas/scouts did.

Yeah I routinely get banned here for calling out the doomers - one of whom is a mod btw, but I was dead set against this trade from day 1 with the

We had 8 NHL defensemen prior to trading Sandin. We now have 10 and one of them is a 50-ish point OFD that we're gonna use in a 7th D role. It's just an absolute waste of what on most other teams would be a useful asset. I'd much rather would have had the additional pick that Dubas alluded to was the other option. Picks don't help the team now but Gustafsson is neither helping now nor will he be useful in the future as he is likely gone in the off season.

I still don't understand the reasoning behind this trade, Sandin at 1.4x2 and still an RFA

Only thing I can think of is extra cap to re-sign Matthews/Nylander. Gustaffson is a UFA, we will likely not re-sign him. We get a late 1st for Sandin, which is similar value, I'd prefer Sandin. But that's an extra 1.4M for Nylanders inevitable raise.

I imagine Dubas made him a promise that if he wasn’t permanently in the the top 6 by the deadline, he’d move him. He’s done it before.

Gus is a nothing piece to this trade. He should have been moved again for another draft pick, unless Dubas misjudged that anyone else would find value in Gus, and offer another draft pick.

A UFA that we have no place for, that will walk for nothing. Dubas should have taken another pick, or done whatever possible to have Jensen coming the other way instead. No dice? No problem, then we will keep Sandin and get a better trade or keep him.

This was my least favorite TDL move by Dubas, and if we think we are regretting this now, wait until next season when Gio is no longer a viable every day 3LHD.

Bad move with bad value on a legitimate asset, just wasted.

In two years' time the hindsight conclusion will be: Dubas shouldn't have extended Rielly and kept Sandin around to replace Rielly's role in 2023-24.

Sandin doesn't fill Rielly's role.

Rielly is our only PMD who is empowered or able to skate through multiple zones while keeping possession. Even other PMDs like Liljegren or Timmins rely more really good breakout passes. They will join the rush but rarely lead it. Sandin was built more like them than he was like a Rielly because he isn't a great skater.

The reason why Rielly is considered one of the core now is because he's the only guy on the team that fills the role he does. Sandin's style of play is emulated by Liljegren and Timmins who I think will probably be an everyday player next year if Holl is gone.

I still hate the trade but not because Sandin was traded but because the return. Sandin had no real role on this team once they got McCabe and he doesn't play well enough on his off hand to replace any of the RHD we have.

Even though in the background the reasons for moving Sandin may be valid (promise made by Dubas? no room on LD? unable to play RD? problems during contract negotiations? player too slow? player not strong enough to move opponents out of the slot, unable to trade Rielly, need cap space, etc.) this will go down in Leaf history as one of the worst Leafs trades of all time.

It might go down as one of the best in the long run. A shot across the bow for player agents who advise their clients to hold out instead of negotiating.

100%. This should have been obvious to their pro scouts and management a year ago, and it will soon be obvious to the whole hockey world.

Dubas said that they have had their eye on Gus for awhile. I think for more than a year.

Has anyone watched Sandin play in Washington?

Aren't his play-driving stats bad currently? This sounds more like unsustainable production than anything else.

Seen the rest of Washington's team after the deadline?

I look forward to you trashing Sandin more in the future. It's so hilariously predictable.

Eagerly await Caps fans reaction when Sandin holds them hostage at the next contract negotiations.

Where did I bash Sandin? No need to get emotional.

I want a bigger sample size than 4 games to claim a winner in this trade. I've always thought it was fair.

Absolutely, and it will always remain one of the more perplexing moves I've seen in Dubas' tenure. Sandin proving Keefe & co wrong. Good for him, and shame we had to let him walk for a simple late 1st.
What if I told you that Sandin was ready to walk this summer? That it was clear that he had no interest in resigning with the Leafs because he didn't like where he slotted in with our system and our personnel? Now what? What do you do as Dubas, dubplatepressure

uh....Tuuka Rask Says hi.

Not to mention we still don't know the full extent of this trade.

I want Sandin to do well and I'm sure he'll thrive and get the time on ice that he wanted there versus here.

He likely wanted out, but how would he walk lol? He's on a 2 year deal would still be RFA in 2024 when it's up.

He most likely did want out and wasn't really gelling with our system based on how we play and who we have on defense around him. But you are correct. I thought his contract expired this summer, it expires next summer. Either way, Dubas needed to move on from Sandin. Doing it ASAP is better for the team and the player.

People seem to think that players are the same regardless of the team and the system and their role within that system from team to team. This is a DUMBASS asinine take.

Kadri for example was not the same in Colorado as he was in Toronto or how he is in Calgary.

Sandin is going to be different in Washington to how he was in Toronto. We got more than a good enough look as to how Sandin fit in with our system and personnel. This was a good move by Dubas for everyone involved.
