Do you think Gustaffson will play as well as Sandin this playoffs? Cause we drafted Sandin 29th and have Bostons first . If a star player drops we can trade up later. Sandin wasn't in going to play top 6.

Pretty clear Dubas galaxy brained himself with the Gus/Engvall/Schenn moves. Everything up until that point was masterclass.

Needed another goal scorer more than anything.

Sandin being traded could’ve been justified had it been for say Konecny from Philly. Trading him for an older and worse version of him and a useless late first that Dubas held instead of parlaying into literally anything helpful for this season is a travesty.

Agreed. Any forward of significance (20+ goal scorer) and it would have been fine. Now we're stuck with an awkward roster construction and gave away one of the only two defensemen we've been able to develop properly.

Questionable that ever happened.

Usually development involves players not spending large amounts of time getting press-boxed, instead being given a reasonable pathway to an every day role with a team...

They were on their way this year when the injuries happened. Unfortunately that run way disappeared as soon as guys were healthy again instead of letting them run with it a bit.

Dang however the Caps are using Sandin it seems like its working pretty damn well so far. Still wished that we didn't trade him. Was looking forward to see him be a Leaf for a long while. :(

I mean who knows if this lasts but 9 points in 4 games and playing heavy minutes each game. The Capitals clearly think he can be a really good player and are playing him like that.

Just wait until the summer narrative of "Sandin was never good as a Maple Leaf" comes into full force.

Not about talent, simply just never had a place to run with here.

You can understand it logistically, but the issue we'll over time always come back to is why didn't we make the room?

And the short-form answer to that is Rielly.

You could have had Rielly and Sandin both as top-4 LHD as long as you composed the rest of the defense correctly.

But even then, he still doesn't need to be a top-4 LHD at this juncture in time. Running him on the bottom pair with ~16ish mins of TOI consistently with a proper partner would have been most ideal. But they opted to have a 39 year old Giordano take that spot instead (and I don't hate Gio either).

With the inbound Jack McCabe (basically a resumption of the position and role Muzzin occupied), keeping and utilizing Sandin in a larger role or comparable role to the one Washington's employing him in forces one of either McCabe or Rielly on their off-side, or relegate McCabe to the third pairing, which I don't believe was in the Leafs' plans...

And again, logistically I get it, they committed to Rielly and all of Sandin's strengths are already in his domain.

I question the return, personally.

We basically just rewinded a 1st round defenceman who has turned into an NHL'er, which is a solid asset to have, back into a 1st round pick with all of the risks that come with that..

I don't even consider Gus an asset, as a UFA on a crowded defence.

Good for Sandin and him getting a ton of playing time now. He's been doing very well there.

It'll be a bit until anyone's knows how this trade really plays out but obviously good for the caps so far.

He's racking up a ton of points but I doubt that lasts for long. We'll see. Just didn't have the room for him here.

Wish him the best. Leafs are much better than the caps though. The timing was off for the team and player. Move on.
