If Sandin wanted out, which seems likely, Leafs should’ve done to him what the Bruins did with DeBrusk and told him to suck it up and just enjoy playing on a winner (sans playoffs). DeBrusk ended up changing his mind about leaving and that could’ve potentially happened with Sandin. Alas, Dubas far too often wants to “do right” by his players and now we’ve lost a talented young defenseman.

DeBrusk changed his mind because he got the money he was looking for, they gave him 4mil for being a 40 point middle 6er. Sandin wasn’t going to get the numbers he needs to get the money he wants here. The alternative was paying him 4mil to be a sheltered #5 and hoping something clicks up the lineup like Boston did with DeBrusk.

Shook my head when the deal happened.

Later surmised, perhaps it wasn't Dubas so much as it was Keefe.

Wanted Keefe replaced (with Trotz) the second after we lost on Salming's night.

Anybody know off hand how many minutes Sandin played when Reilly was injured?

This fight sealed his fate... He should've done what every other leaf player did and just ignored the dirty hit on their star player.

Sandin wanted out after he was scratched last playoffs. What do you think would've happened when we scratched him again these playoffs? He was obviously a fine player but he was 100% on his way to being a healthy scratch again these playoffs.

Get over it, we got a return for a player that was going to demand a trade.

Well said. Keefe hates this fisticuffs stuff.
Whether Sandin is successful or not depends on skating. I have said many times, he must be a Ray Borque type of player, with the puck on his stick. He will never be strong enough defensively.

I like sandin and still think he becomes kabrle esque but I like the Leafs better and from a team standpoint this move frees up cap space and a contract slot next season, we gain an asset in a late first and replaced him with a more suitable depth rental.
Sandin was not what we needed, McCabe was what we needed. Sandin will do well on a team where he can be the offensive defenseman with limited defensive responsibilities, especially in the playoffs when the game gets heavier.
As for being a fan of sandin, I'm happy he's going to be somewhere he will play regularly and get minutes, somewhere his tools are needed more than they were here.
Best of luck Rasmus

I’m personally more excited for the people who wanted him out of the lineup because he’s too small, too slow, and too Soo Greyhound to remind us how they actually always knew he’d be a Norris winner every time he goes +2.
I have never seen so much praise for Sandin on this board until he was dealt. Not that everyone disliked the player. But there was a lot of negativity or just plain old meh for this guy. Now that he's gone.... I'm not surprised with this fan base.

If i had a dollar for every little Chihuahua that didn't know his place and thought he was a tough guy and got his assed kicked I'd be retired by now. Do you know what a pian in the ass it is to ignore every man with short guy syndrome that thinks because I'm a foot taller than them or 80 lbs bigger I owe it to them to fight them so they can win their man card? Guys like Sandin royally annoy me. Know your place.

How quickly we forget how poorly he handles a heavy, tenacious forecheck.

If it came down to Gio, McCabe or Sandin, I am glad we chose the two vets.
You didn't finish your last thought.

Ok I'm one who isn't upset by this trade and who likes it. I liked the player, but knew his flaws, especially in relation to this team, its make up and what it is trying to accomplish (vs. a team like Washington).

But this is showing your clear hatred toward him. He didn't win the fight, so what, he stepped up. Had he not, there would have been criticism that this team continues to be too soft and no one defends star players and blah blah. He stepped up in a good way, the way most would have wanted any Leaf player to.

He didn't step up, he's a p***y.
He stepped up, he didn't know his place.

You cannot have both here.

Who are all these people? Sounds made up.

Seems a lot of fantasy posts in this thread about the mysterious posters who use to think one thing and now think another.
It sounds so wide spread that these hypocritical posts shouldn't be hard to find.

Hatred is a strong word, I don't hate anyone. I dislike a some people. Like PK Subban, I couldn't stand that douche but when I heard he gave all that money to the Sick Kids Hospital, I got every minute in the world for that guy now.

I don't know Sandin, couldn't tell you a thing about him, except he thought he was better than he really is. Couldn't skate for shit, couldn't read the game 9/10 times, was slow, had a choppy stride, constantly skated himself into corners, I remember one play where he dipsy doodled an opponents shadow all the way into the corner and then fell into the boards, all while the closest opponent was 20 to 30 feet away.

Small guys in particular irk me cause they are always "on", trying to prove they are a man. I get it small man you're insecure, you need to make yourself feel better... so you do manly things, poorly. He's a p***y cause he went into a fight knowing he was going to get his ass kicked. Being a human speed bag is not manly, it's stupid. Let me prove I'm not man enough to defend myself, mission accomplished.

yes folks - we know he is a good defender and I'm sure we will be reminded of it for the next decade any time he does anything good

I think he wasn't happy in Toronto and Dubas gave him a better opportunity elsewhere

Would be great to lock this thread up - nothing good will come out of this

To be honest, it's Rielly who I would like to shed.

I also don't think the team or the player were happy with how the whole contract debacle went this summer.

I hate to think of what will happen to Liljegren's attitude if he gets benched again in this year's playoffs.

I wonder if a lot of people crying over this trade are the same people who wanted to trade Liljegren because he was a bust when Sandin passed him on the depth charts.

Sandin has looked good, no doubt. But a lot of it has come down to opportunities and expectations.

Beauvillier goes from the Islanders to the Canucks and goes from 1:27 power play minutes per game to 3:07/game. He's got 13 points in 15 games since being acquired.

Same with Sandin, he's now getting an opportunity more than 45seconds more per game since going to the Caps.

I don't think Lilly has that personality.

However, if Keefe benches him again, I am done with Keefe.

If as Keefe says, players get ice time based off merit, Lilly should be getting ice time over Holl and Rielly. In my mind there are two spots open. #1 and #3 on the left side, play good, you are in the next game, play like crap, it's next man up.

Earned ice time
Brodie 2/3
Lily 4/5
Gio 5
Timmons 6

Not earned ice time
Holl (RD)
Rielly (RD)

New
Gustafsson (LD)
McCabe (LD)
Schenn (RD)

Anyone below Timmons should be fighting for ice time but Keefe is full of shit, when he says players get ice time off of merit, he means players who are not perceived as stars have to work for their ice time.

1 Open / 2 Brodie
3 Open / 4 Lily
5 Gio / 6 Timmons

IMO I think McCabe slots in at LD 2nd pairing, #3 very nicely. Leaving the 1st pairing wide open for one of 3 remaining players Gus / Rielly / Holl, good thing Brodie can play either side.

Lets get our pairings set so they can play 20ish games together before we face Tampa.
