As I have said, Bourque or bust.
That is who he must be.

To bad he never played in the Soo.

he played in the Soo tho ...

He was selected by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2017 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft.[2] He made his professional debut in playing five games for the Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) before joining the Greyhounds for the 2017–18 season.[3] At the end of the regular season, Sandin was awarded the Rookie of the Year award by the team.[4] He was later announced as an OHL finalist for the Emms Family Award.[5]

What part don't people realize that Sandin demanded a trade and Dubas just got way more value than he shoulda for a player who wanted out?

Well he's under contract for another season and perhaps could have been dealt in the off-season after the season was concluded?

What was he going to do, refuse to report to the Leafs the rest of the year?

Ultimately he signed the two-year deal, ask Debrusk how "demanding" a trade worked for him.

One of two things happened here:

1) Kyle was a nice-guy again and just sent him somewhere nice where he could play, and took anything back he could whether or not it could help the team win this year.
2) Kyle took a return back with a 1st round pick that he wanted to flip into something else that could have helped the team right now, but it didn't materialize.

I always liked Sandin but all you can really do is laugh at what’s happened so far. Obviously he’s not THIS good, looking at that production.

Just funny how it’s all played out to this point. I think he’ll be a great second pairing guy when it’s all said and done.

Good for Sandin and him getting a ton of playing time now. He's been doing very well there.

It'll be a bit until anyone's knows how this trade really plays out but obviously good for the caps so far.

He's racking up a ton of points but I doubt that lasts for long. We'll see. Just didn't have the room for him here.

Wish him the best. Leafs are much better than the caps though. The timing was off for the team and player. Move on.
Hard to see how this could be a win for the Leafs unless Sandin falls off a cliff in his play or Dubas uses the pick he got and drafts another prospect that has a Knies like development curve and can be ready to play in a season or two with possible star potential.

Sandin is ready to play now who along with Liljegren should've been the Leafs future long term pairing on the blue line. Sucks that the Leafs committed to Rielly when trading him a season or two ago would've solved several problems with one move where A) it would've returned a decent package of assets for him, B) would've removed his often average to below average defensive play from the lineup and C) allowed Sandin to have more ice time and saved a ton of money to use on other players.

Actually 3 points.

1 goal and 7 assists in 4 games and a +6.

He's ruining the Caps tank.
For some reason he was credited with 4 assists originally but one was taken away. Either way, the Leafs don't have a defenseman who can generate offense as well as Sandin. They should have taken more time with him to try to iron out his game for sure

I saw the boxscore at that point show the Backstrom goal twice that Sandin assisted on. When they changed and corrected the fourth goal to Dowd, Sandin was corrected to three assists.

I'm trying to understand why they didn't keep Sandin for defensive depth this season for a playoff run.

fair points. I'm not upset about him doing well though. I just don't think he would of ever been given a fair shake here for years so they got what they could for him and moved on.

I guess I just don't get hung up on ex players. I'm worried about how the current team is doing and wish ex players all the best for the most part.

I wish we could of got a bit more too but in his first 4 games if he hadn't racked up the points he has... no one is talking about this.

Also caps are going to be a rough team for a bit possibly so what he does there may not mean much.

I still think he asked for a trade

But the Leafs decided to extend rielly .. while Sandin isn’t Mo, both have their weaknesses defensively. Rielly’s awareness and defensive IQ. Sandin’s footsore and size. Hard to compensate elsewhere to build an effect blue line .

Pretty would be in Dubas to make hay with that draft pick

I have never seen so much praise for Sandin on this board until he was dealt. Not that everyone disliked the player. But there was a lot of negativity or just plain old meh for this guy. Now that he's gone.... I'm not surprised with this fan base.
The thing is that when Sandin was here, we were able to watch his whole game while he is a Caps, we are either scoreboard watching or just highlights.

I think it all depends if the Leafs do anything in the playoffs plus what they do with that 1st rounder pick. If they win the Cup and use that pick to draft Vas 2.0. Even if Sandin become Lidstorm 2.0, I would still think Leafs win the deal.

The speculation is Sandin likely wouldn’t have been a happy camper being a spare part in the playoffs. Optically, it would probably also lower his trade value if a parting of ways would be required in the offseason as it would line him up with a Dermott type career trajectory.

This deal kind of reminds me of the Kapanen deal where you just roll the dice again with a first rounder.

People have to also remember Sandin isn’t doing all this and logging all that time on a playoff bound team. He’s on a team that might be picking top 10. This is where young guys thrive and get their opportunity. He wasn’t a good fit here.

Agreed, though I think maybe they hope Timmins can be that guy

Just joking about the Soo...and it was a great trade, but Sandin could be a very good player when given real ice time and confidence.

Trading Sandin was a mistake.

Should have given Sandin at least one more year before trading him. Smallish and no speed, but could develop into a Torey Krug type of player still. Not so shabby and worth much more than late first.

Dubas should have been prohibited from making trades like that due to the status of his contract.

How was it a mistake? Sandin wanted out.

Is he playing over Jake McCabe who we now have for an extra 2 seasons?

Is he playing over Rielly who we locked up for another 7?

Is he even playing over Giordano? Who we have for another season after this. And he can’t play the right. Our defensive depth is just too much and add on top that he would never get #1 PP time. It was the right decision to move on, get a first for him.

Sandin is a good player, I’m sad he’s gone but the fit in Toronto just wasn’t there, coupled with the fact that he wanted out anyways. Got good value for him.

Without having to read 37 pages, can someone fill me in on whether there were any extraneous factors like Sandin actually not wanting to be here? I'm confused about this trade as well. I thought he was developing nicely. At least they got a half decent return for him.

Dubas got rolled on this deal, Capitals fans can’t believe their fortune.

He did really well this trade season, but this one has an odour that will last a decade Leafs fans.

We don't know for sure, but based on the tough negotiations last offseason where Sandin was reported to want a much bigger role, the fact that he wasn't going to make our 6 defensemen in the playoffs without injury, and the fact that he was blocked from the top-4 for multiple years with the addition of McCabe, it's speculated that he wouldn't be very happy and his value would just continue taking hits.

Now Sandin has picked up a bunch of points in his first few games with Washington, and people have started panicking, without realizing that it's wildly unsustainable and he's actually not played anywhere close to as well as the points suggest. An 88.9 GF% at 5v5, but a 45.9 xGF%. A 0.974 SV% hiding a 3.43 xGA/60 at 5v5. Currently at a 75% IPP at 5v5 through 4 games. Karlsson in a generational season is at 65%, and otherwise the top for defensemen is generally in the low 50s. Picked up an assist on every single PP goal the team has scored as well. Plays the most, and yet is still being sheltered from defensive situations more than anybody on the team.

I liked Sandin, and I'm happy for him that he's off to a hot start there, but I think we need to pump our brakes here a little bit.

give it more than 4 games.

I am sure this thread will die down shortly.

It was a fair trade at the time and still is.

I would have preferred a pick over Gustaffson, but that's the only complaint.
