I think I’m just trying to reason why he could be so willing to sit out. But also I’m hesitant to believe everything that’s reported. Teams lie all the time to save face and make them look good. It would be advantageous for Dubas to do so and have public support this time around to avoid the backlash he took from the other RFA negotiations.
I can see where you're coming from. I also think it would be advantageous for the agent to use these injuries as a chance to save some face.

Either way, lets hope Rasmus can jump into 1-2 pre-season games and show us all that he's actually underpaid at 1.4.

If Muzzin is going to struggle with injuries this year (let's hope not), we need a really strong year from Sandin. I'm excited to get started!

Agreed! Me too, just want the pre season games to end and let’s get it rocking. Hopefully our defense can hold up to win the division that would be amazing

Then why did he decide the morning after they both coincidentally suffered serious injuries to decide that there were enough injuries for him to have an opportunity? If he is not worried about Benn and Dahlstrom, then did he randomly just wake up this morning and decide that the same opportunity that was presented to him at the start of training camp last week (when Muzzin and Liljegren were hurt) is suddenly good enough for him?

He is either stupid or threatened. Or maybe both, because he doesn't realize that he still needs to beat out Kral and Mete, who are far more likely to take his job than Dahlstrom and Benn.

This is not a matter of whether he should have been threatened either (because he is not going to lose a job to Benn or Dahlstrom and should not have been threatened) but rather if he was. Based on his actions, it seems like he was threatened.

I'm puzzed by this logic. Do you actually think that Sandin would have been competing for a spot against Benn and Dahlstrom? And if not (and I sure hope you don't think something this ridiculous) then why do their injuries matter to him?

There's no need to overthink this. Sandin held out for money based on the advice of his agent who pulled the same stunt with Nylander. But as we've learned from Nylander - holding out too long guarantees that you'll be behind the 8-ball and will have a shit season in a crucial year, so he waited as long as he could and then folded his bluff.

Wonder how he knows what was offered?
I don't think it came from Leafs .. agent is a mouth piece though so likely from him .. at some point his act will put him out of league .. kick up enough sh*t calling teams around league offering your guy to them

It was the first bunch of games Muzz was here. I thought they were great and the nerd numbers loved them as a duo. Don't think he's ever had a other significant stretch. Though maybe with the corpse of Phaneuf?

And tbh Mo doesn't "look right" defensively in the left side anyways.
I also thought that Muzzin and Rielly played great together, but yeah IIRC Babcock only gave them 3 games together (which as you stated were good by the eye test and statistically) and then separated them giving some BS dialogue to the media that really amounted to him whining about the GM not giving him the right handed defenseman that he had his mind set on having (which was dumb, as Muzzin unquestionably made the team and D-corps better).

I'm really not one of those ones who thinks that Babs was an awful coach full stop, but what was clear to me was that he did not like working under Dubas and then intentionally self-sabotaged to try and prove a stupid point rather than making things work with a legitimately improved roster.

Kind of a tangential rant, but yeah I think some of our left handed defensemen to get more reps and experience playing the right side. Finding a way to have our six best defensemen playing and finding complimentary partnerships within that is more important than just matching L-R handedness IMO

The thing is, those two defensemen ahead of him were injured before the start of training camp.

The tweet says that he called Dubas after the two injuries yesterday (Benn and Dahlstrom) which tells me he was worried they would beat him out.

He truly is a guy who wants absolutely no competition... which is really concerning.
Or he realized his team really needs him with the significant injuries and didn’t want to let the boys down

Read the last paragraph.

This signing puts the Leafs about $3 mil over the cap and perhaps LTIR can be used with some of the injuries.
Is LTR only used after 10 games are missed ?

Sandin was always guaranteed a spot as he should be. He's an everyday NHLer
I'd say so as well. That said, this season's group of seven on D should be even better than last season's (Giordano > Dermott), so it'll be interesting to see what happens in a scenario where everyone is ready to suit up.

Can anyone please school me on injuries and cap space? Does cap relief only kick in when a player is placed in LTIR or do teams get immediate relief for every game missed? If Tavares misses a few games, it adds up pretty fast.

no immediate relief. you have to put someone on ltir - and that player has to miss at least 10gms AND 24 days before he can come off it. and then you lose all that extra space when he does.

It's probably been said already and I posted earlier already and figured this but it's the agent here and we all know it.

I know... saying the obvious but just have to say it because it's such a piss off. Gross needs to f*** right off from this team.
