And I've been right there most of the last 30 years. It's been a pleasure.

Anyone remember Jim Gorden & Chadwick? Kids these days would crucify them today, but they were great, really got into the game like Sam does.

We have been really lucky to have some great announcers/Color guys over the years. Sam slips from time to time, I find myself yelling at him through the screen, but overall he's aces.

Think I'm wrong? Go listen to the Flyers broadcasts, see if you can make it 5 minutes without wanting to punch Dornhoffer in his face.

Try and listen to any other team's broadcast. Most of them are horrible; hell, the Penguins' broadcasting crew is the biggest joke in this league. I wanna put my fist through my TV whenever I hear Steigerwald saying some biased, ignorant things every 5 seconds.

As much as I love Rosen, I sincerely wish he would use adjectives other than "good" once in a while.

I'll take simplicity in pbp over Emrick and his thesaurus. I'm watching a hockey game, I don't need to hear about guys "sashay"ing the puck all over the ice.

The Pens announcer probably has the biggest bias out of any team.

Just want to add my two cents here and say how much I appreciate Sam and how much a part of my life he has been for three decades. In the dog days of summer I find myself yearning to hear his voice.

I remember Jim Gordon and Bill Chadwick with fondness and also Marv Albert from his radio days in the early 60s when the Rangers were beginning to expand their brand and hockey was starting to boom in NY. In those days only the last 10 minutes of the 1st and 2nd periods plus all of the third were broadcast.

Also other TV announcers from the 60s and early 70s: Win Elliot, Tim Ryan (I think) and a guy named Norm Jarry who they brought in from Quebec for a few months when one of their announcers got sick. I think Jarry became mayor of a town in Quebec later.

But Sam is the best. I can't think of the Rangers without hearing his voice in my head.

And the homerism is night and day. Sam is a homer at times, but it's usually positive, and when our guys take bad penalties he gets on them. Flyers announcers find fault with every penalty called against them. It's comical.

Interestingly, I've found that the west coast teams (SJS, ANA, LAK) have some surprisingly good broadcasters. One of the reasons I like staying up to watch those games.

Ive been critical of Sam since JD left. Part of it is hes just getting older and blowing more calls - part of it is its tough to gain chemistry with a stiff like Micheletti. Anyway, I thought hes actually been better this year.

The constant pitching of sponsors is what annoys me most, but MSG would force anyone to do that - not Sam's fault.

Not only do I need to hear about the "Foxwoods Final 5" during critical parts of the game, but recently I have to hear about how the Foxwoods Final 5 is "coming up"

:shakehead

I'm a huge fan of Sam Rosen. He's not one of the best in the league, I could easily name 5-10 play by play announcers who are better.

But Sam is OUR play by play announcer....someone a lot of us have grown up with. Even when I hear his voice on NFL telecasts I think Ranger hockey.

He's also one of the nicest guys ever...

My dad always talked about the time (probably late 80's or so) he brought me to a college basketball game at the Meadowlands arena. We were in the first row behind the boards, and Sam was announcing the game on TV. In between games (it was a doubleheader) Sam came walking by, and my dad stopped Sam to say hello....and Sam spent the entire time in between games discussing Ranger hockey with my dad...something my dad never forgot.

Dad always said Sam gave up a bathroom break to talk Ranger hockey...now THAT'S a nice guy!!!

So if I want to make fun of you because of how you look, would you report my post? Because I could go on and on.

You sound like a 5 year old making fun of how he looks. "He looks like Ben Franklin." :shakehead

Yeah it comes off as really childish sounding and immature. A person who doesn't like Sam could just say "I don't care for his commentary" or "I'm not a big fan of his" and leave it at that.... But to take shots at the guy for his hair or physical appearance just raises questions about the character of the individual making the criticisms... Show some maturity/class/respect - it's not that hard to do.

!

There are 30 teams in the league, who do you think are the 5-10 PbP guys better than Sam? Just curious... (I'm not saying he's the best, but you're saying he's not in the top 33% of NHL PbP guys. Having not lived in the NY/NJ/LI area over the years (on and off) I've watched my fair share of other teams on TV with their feed/PbP guys, and most of them stink, badly.

5-10 is a stretch.

Personally my favorites are Doc Emrick and Gary Thorne. Both aren't associated with a singular team at this time. Gary Thorne doesnt even do the NHL anymore, which is a damn shame.

Emrick makes my ears bleed. Seriously. I turn the sound off when he's the only option, i.e. NBC games. And I agree on the 5-10, that's why I questioned her...

I've been listening to Sam for all of those 30 years. In my opinion there's nobody better. He's obviously good at what he does, but for me it goes beyond that because he's been in my ears since I was a kid. Hearing his voice simply means hockey. Like has been mentioned, if you don't appreciate him that's fine, but give a listen to other play by play guys around the league and then see if you feel the same way.

I work mostly in the town he's from and bump into him from time to time. He's a great guy who's always willing to have a quick chat about the Rangers. He also blew a stop sign one day in front of me and I had to slam the brakes. Seeing his horrified, bald, Rosen head, mouth the words "HOLY ****!" wiped out any initial anger I had. haha

How interesting must his life be if he was just to narrate all day long?

Also, if I was Sam, I'd just stop in the middle of doing something and just yell out, "ITS A POWERPLAY GOAL".

The old ESPN crews were the best. Thorne and Clement, Strader and Pang. Glad Strader still gets national games. Panger, I believe, is with the Blues.

I also like Jim Hughson, Pierre Houde, and Bob Miller. And Howie R. knows his ****, too.

If you're going to ruin a good TV, might as well make the drive to Pittsburgh and crown him with it.

Rose and Congestedlossi also talk about Foxwoods.
