One stop gap option that caught my interest was John Mitchell.

Played on a horrible Av's team but is good at the dot and has a great Takeaway to Giveaway ratio like Bones.

Why are you using unreliable stats like takeaways and giveaways to evaluate a player?

Those stats are compiled by the home team statisticians. There is no set standard as to what counts as a giveaway or what counts as a takeaway.

The only stat less reliable is hits.

DK says Carolina wants to stay near the salary floor and has a surplus of centers. That's why Staal could conceivably be in play. FWIW.

Meh if stall came at 50% maybe... otherwise 3c can be filled in season... i mean we arent missing the playoffs even if we played Dea and Simon there... and in season someone will fall out of favor with a coaching staff somewhere and be moved cheap

Well, just comparing them to Bones was all.
He's also better than Bones at the dot and has solid CF% playing with trash in COL and starting over 50% of his shifts in the DZ.

Supposedly McKegg is a legit roster threat at 4C if Cullen doesn't come back and we don't make a trade. In that case, moving Rowney to C3, while not a long term solution, does potentially give us better balance by not having him and Reaves, presumably our weakest from a production standpoint, on the same line.

I wouldn't even want McKegg as number five on our center depth chart.

I have to think their making a trade before the season starts. I can't see them going into the season not getting a legit 3c no matter what Rutherford said. The RFA stuff will be dealt with first and then I think a trade is going to be made.

The comments in Mackey's article regarding Rutherford looking for alternative ways to acquire a 3C intrigue me.

Mitchell doesn't have Bonino's offensive ability though. Defense is all well and good, but a big part of why the Pens were so strong was because their 3C and 4C actually produced at 30+ point paces. Mitchell won't do that.

Mitchell is a fine 4C. bringing him in to be a 3C would be a mistake.

And to helm, not for free. Only if Detroit retained 2mil, then i'd be interested.

Especially considering Malkin's standard 10-20 game absence.

Crosby
Rowney
McKegg
Tiffles/Blueger/Whoever

That cannot be your center lineup ever, even in the preseason or at practice (especially with an OK but far from stellar defense).

I mean... you either sign or trade for someone, right?

Or is he looking in Europe?

You can build someone but only if you have the technology.

Yeah, I was curious about that as well. Wondering if an offer sheet really is a possibility. I still highly, highly doubt it. Wouldn't even know who he'd target.

Depending on how high the organization is on a guy like Bluegers, they might be okay going into the season with Crosby/Malkin/Bluegers/Rowney down the middle.

Offer sheets are the dumbest thing in the NHL. Teams just match. It's not even worth doing. You are just doing that team's work negotiating. And even if you do sign someone, you are giving up compensation.

If Malkin went down with an injury, im assuming Guentzel plays 2C. Rowney would never be our 2C.

Nobody even takes advantage of offer sheets, they don't make sense from a poaching standpoint, and you are blacklisted within the GM community around the league if you even try it.

Just get rid of 'em already.

Give someone an AAV of around $3.9M and the compensation is just a 2nd round pick, which isn't bad at all. That would give them a larger reason to match, but who knows? :dunno:
