When we acquire a 3C, I guess I would be fine with Rowney as a 4C. However I don't like how McKegg could be 5th on our center depth chart.

Damn, that sucks. I wonder what the asks were that they could not work out a reasonable long term deal now? Sure they can still work something out but you would have to think that the asks right now were high, the Pens do not really low ball players. I do not see how that changes in the future.

Conor Sheary and Brian Dumoulin have not signed their qualifying offers, which they received as restricted free agents, and have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file for arbitration.

Sheary and Dumoulin are represented by the same agent, Lewis Gross, who has not returned multiple calls and text messages from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Rutherford said he expects the two to go the arbitration route, although that’s not official because it’s not his call, and nothing will be official until 5 p.m.

“We don’t have an agreement with them,” Rutherford said. “Five o’clock today, I think, is the filing [deadline] for arbitration. I would expect that’s what they’re going to do.

Not that surprising as I had a feeling it could get to 7.5-8 million for those 2 on longer deals.

Banking on 4mil for Sheary and 4.5mil for Dumoulin, and assuming Rowney and Ruhwedel go off the books (AHL), they'll have about 3.8mil left with lines looking something like...

Sheary - Crosby - Hornqvist
Guentzel - Malkin - Kessel
Hagelin - ? - Rust
Wilson - ? - Kuhnhackl
Reaves (assuming he's not a regular in the lineup)

Dumouloin - Letang
Maatta - Schuiltz
Cole - Hunwick

 Fat chance. He has 2 goals in 166 games and you think the arbiter is going to award him 1 million less than Schultz? There is no way he's getting 4.5m from arbitration.

Not that we should, but the Pens aren't catching a break with any hometown discounts after 2 Cups. I'm not a fan of hometown discounts anyway, because Owners/GMs will just dump players or buy them out anyway. But We also aren't getting any super luck to help this stuff along.

Not that I know these guys in real life, but they don't seem like the sort of guys that would want to create a huge fuss. Anybody know who their agents are?

If he wants 4.5 or more then i say adios. No point overpaying for 1 years worth of production and a crappy playoffs.

If Sheary gets even close to the 5 number he just gets his ticket out of here.

Just because they file for arbitration doesn't mean that they won't sign before the hearing. This is just maximizing leverage.

I dont care how much. Just sign dumo. Sheary, if he asks or get rewarded too much, can be a piece in a trade for a 3C for all I care. 1 year glued to sid shouldnt get you 5m with term...

We have sprong and ZAR ready or close to ready. Still a few stop gap forwards left in FA too.
We dont have anyone to replace dumoulin.

I'm not particularly worried about the Dumo contract. What type of leverage does he have to be awarded over 4MM in arbitration?

He has 2 goals and 33 points in 163 games. That's worse than Karl Alzner type of production and he only got 4.7MM on the open market as a UFA.

Sheary could get more than we want because of his big year, but time will tell.

Dumoulin will likely gets what's fair. A comparable should be Maatta. So I expect $4mil.

I think Sheary's agent is going to screw him. Sheary needed to sign a 2-3yr deal worth $2mil-2.5mil. Then cash in after that if his play continues. I think they are leaning too much on the regular season stats and under valuing the role Crosby played in his success. He may take his ball and go home and get paid else where...but that's quickly gonna be a bad contract that will be bought out. Sheary was very iffy when away from Crosby and really struggled against bigger, physical teams.

I want Sheary here. I do. I really do. But I also don't believe a hefty cap hit is worth the burden. With Sprong and ZAR chomping at the bit...I wouldn't do anything to make myself movable if I were him, assuming staying in Pittsburgh is something he wants. Bring from Mass, I can't see a more ideal situation closer to home.

I thought we would see Sheary in arbitration, but I thought we could have offered Dumo a longer term contract. Keep in mind that Sheary and Dumo can still sign a deal before an arbitration settlement.

My understanding is that they are one or two year deals. This is somewhat troublesome for Dumo. Sheary might be in his way out as he is more easily replaced.

To be fair to Sheary and Dumo, they haven't gotten a big contract in the NHL yet. So this is a big deal for them to get a contract that they can set themselves up for life on.
