Unless we shed cap elsewhere we will not be able to fit both IMO. I would not be happy with the term I expect Horny wants anyway.

Alzner looks a heck of a lot like Cole to me in style and stat profile, and age isn't far off. Would you want to give Cole that contract? Alzner has some hard miles on him too, and doesn't have the rings.

And yeah, I'd give PH up to 5 years if that's what it took. He'll still be scoring 15-20 goals a year when he's 36, just like almost every other guy who played like him. But I think we end up giving him 3 or 4 years @ 5M.

Fair point.

I think what I mean is I'm expecting not to want Cole back at his new cap hit regardless of what happens to Horny.

I see. I personally rate Cole quite highly. I wouldn't mind something less than $4M.

Re GMs caring about resolving a need for us... I see where you guys are coming from but that's more an argument for Dallas trading to us than NJ, being in the other conference. And Faksa not as sure a thing as Henrique by any means ... so many a little pessimistic there on our chances. Henrique? I stand by it. NJ has absolutley no reason to trade that guy. If they have too many C, you don't trade the best one on a good contract, you trade one of the middling types or the old guy if you have to.

But they aren't getting the return they need for Zajac or Zacha. And they obviously aren't trading Hischier.

Zacha is 7 years younger, they just signed Boyle, and obviously it won't be Hischier. Henrique is the only one they could get the kind of D they need for, and they have the guys to fill their center spots effectively without him.

Zacha obviously has some promise but why put more pressure on him to be the #1 guy in their situation? Or am i misunderstanding what you're saying about him? Let him continue to develop at a normal pace, etc. NJ's D doesn't look great but based on the type of D we'd be willing to trade, I don't see how Henrique would be involved in that equation. In any case looking at stats a bit closer I'd probably prefer Zajac despite being older, because of his faceoff skills. I guess we'll see but I don't see NJ trading Henrique to anyone really. Not saying he's all-world, I just don't see anything about his situation that forces their hand when they could move other assets. Unless they're going after a top D, which they're not getting from us in any event.

Henrique has the most value and his contract runs out before NJD are in a position to be a contender. Plus their fans seem to think he's movable.

I would not be happy to give Horny that AAV either to be frank.

Zacha would be their #3 behind Zajac and Hischier.

As for preferring Zajac for us, he's 32 and signed for 4 more years at 5.75M. Pass.

Well their fans don't enter into it as far as a GM is concerned, but I guess the disagreement boils down to some people seeing his contract situation as the reason he'd be traded where I see it (given all else happening on their roster) as the reason he would not be traded. And if they keep him I see his next raise being pretty modest too so there's that.

the key for me is that between him and Zajac, Henrique is the one who can actually get them the kind of return they would be looking for without creating a hole in their line-up. I'm sure they wouldn't want to move him, but he's really the only expendable piece they have with the value to bring in a solid D option.

All of this said, unless we have another deal lined up to replace Maatta, I wouldn't move Maatta for Henrique.

Yeah I know he was the #1 guy this year but I would not make that assumption. Will probably get the early season look and unless he tears it up, will be sent back down. Either way I don't know that they'd immediately put Top 6 responsibility on him.

NJ would have to eat some of that contract, I agree.

I admit I haven't looked at their depth chart but isn't jersey extremely lacking on wing as a whole, with the cammerleri buyout.

Ray ray did sign sheary wink wink
Sheary+pouliot for henrique how far off is that?

Do we need to add to Sheary to get Henrique? Actually, I think that's about right, because Pouliot isn't really an add

Also, they just replaced Calimari with Johansson right? They have Hall and Johansson on the left and Palmieri on the right. But I do think they are missing a 2RW. And I have no idea who any of their depth guys are

One team/guy that hasn't been mentioned alot is Cogliano in Anaheim.
That team always seems to be in internal cap mode and likes to cut spending when they have chances too.

They don't have to move on from him immediately but if they're looking to cut payroll, he's likely one of the guys that goes.

Habs would be better off keeping him and trying to make him a center, and also making a trade with Vegas for a center.

Sure, but that is not what is going to happen. Claude Julien does not like Galchenyuk at center, and he even played him at 4LW for a stretch late last season. He is without a doubt on the outs.

I think the Devils now make the most sense after their trade for MJ. Both he and Henrique are C/LWers and they could use another D-man to help replace Larsson. I would say Maatta fits the bill there. Shero has even said he'd look into moving a forward for a D.

Henrique is definitely an intriguing idea. Does anyone know if Mojo is expected to be a center for them?

Henrique makes 4 mil and could certainly be used in a top 6 role. I just wonder if NJ would rather trade Zajac

I think Henrique will play LW for the Devils going forward, and Johansson may have to play RW for them out of necessity. But he can do it.

I don't think Shero is in any rush to trade for a defenseman, much like his predecessor in Toronto. BUT, if he were then Zacha would be my target. With Hischier, Zacha and Mike McLeod, they have options.

I like Henrique but no way in hell do I do that trade. If Maatta goes we need a replacement lined up already

Agreed. I want someone with more upside than Henrique if we are dealing Maatta.

Agreed. What Cole does is much more replaceable than what Horny does.

sure, but he will also come a lot cheaper. That should be a factor.

In any case, things can change but right now I have zero interest in re-signing either Cole or Hornqvist.

We have plenty of wingers to take up the slack, including one (Aston-Reese) who can play a similar style.

Am I the only one that remember that J.Staal didn't want to be a 3C on this team?

That was a hell of a long time ago. Who knows if he still feels that way. The GM who traded for him is here now. His brother left Carolina. We have won two more Cups without Staal, and with Bonino.

Maybe he does not feel that way any longer. :help:

But would you be willing to pay Hornqvist and his body for another five years?

I would not.

Yeah he's a gamer that can play in all situations, and on a good contract. And sure he'd be a great 3C, but why would NJ trade him to a division rival (the GMs former team coming off two Cup wins no less), when he is arguably their best C? Unless Shero is still working for us in secret, I can't conceive of a way that happens.

I think it is more likely we could pull off a young C for Pouliot+ deal with Jersey than one involving Maatta and Henrique. I would need Shero to add in that transaction, personally.

Faksa does nothing for me.

I am sure he will do plenty for Ken Hitchcock, which is why I doubt he is going anywhere.

What about AA from Detroit? They have $2.26m in space with him a depth F and Tatar to sign.

Tatar will command $3.0m+ so when they LTIR Franzen they'd have $3.1m wiggle room. Possibly another $750k added once call ups are done.

Offersheet $3.85m for 4 years

Or go after Faksa

A 23 year old center that's 6'3 210 and put up 33 points in his first full season does nothing for you?

I don't know much about Faksa either way, but the number of points someone put up under Ruff the last 4 years doesn't really mean anything.

I certainly don't rate him that highly although I can understand how some do.

However, if he's coming back at that cap hit, if he's worth that sort of cap hit, you trade Maatta because a 4m player on the 3rd line is not a luxury this team can afford when every other dman is getting paid fairly, and Maatta could get a decent trade return for filling holes.

At which point I think whether Horny comes back or not is still irrelevant ;) If Cole's genuinely a 2nd liner worth 2nd liner money, then you lose a 2nd liner to make it work imo.

Well their fans don't enter into it as far as a GM is concerned, but I guess the disagreement boils down to some people seeing his contract situation as the reason he'd be traded where I see it (given all else happening on their roster) as the reason he would not be traded. Depends on whether they're going on their own gut or nods and winks through the press.

Does Henrique have particularly strong ties to the NJ area that he wouldn't go grab what he could in free agency?

I do think you're overestimating the value of a great friendly contract to a rebuilding team with obnoxious amounts of cap space.

They have some interesting talent coming. Aside from Hischier, Zacha and McLeod at center, there is also John Quenneville (a center/LW, too), power forward Miles Wood, two-way winger Blake Speers. I think all could be in the NHL this season, save for maybe one of the centers (likely McLeod). Jersey is coming, though they still have some work to do on defense.

IMHO, they have an edge over Philadelphia in terms of the rebuilding process, because Jersey has a franchise-caliber goaltender and Philly has only question marks.

The problem is, Cogliano has not played center since he left Edmonton years ago.

That said, his speed is perfect for this team.

You might be right,I compare pouliots value alil less than deangelo when he was traded from Tampa to arizona. Granted deangelo was coming off a real good ahl year but had a decent bit of baggage. And pouliots 70points in 114 ahl games isn't pathetic. So I'd say late 2nd round pick value. If deangelo was high 2nd roundvalue.

I think Henrique is ideal and realistic. We're not locked in if for whatever reason it doesn't work out. He can play both center and wing. Decent on faceoffs. Can help our 2nd PP unit. Make our PK unit dangerous again. He's that guy who can play 2C but can be a high end 3C on a contender. He produced as well as Bonino on a per 60 basis the past two years despite often playing with crap and on a crap offensive team. He also has the rep of being a big game player and a really high hockey iq mind.
