Rumor: Sabres finalizing another trade (not Byram)

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Were the Sabres not in on Thomas at the last TDL? From what I remember with the Parayko failed trade was they were trying to land both.

4th OA a piece they are trying to dangle for Thomas now? :sarcasm:

Mrtka for Parayko ?

Thing that wasn't completed at last deadline, but will be now?

They were rumored to be in on Thomas as well. Thomas is my bet! Or they are still trying to land both Thomas and Parayko.

That was my playbook about a month before the TDL. To try to get both. Sabres stole it. I'm OK with it now because Thomas is not that gritty of a center. A good all around type and good on faceoffs.

Hellybuck , small pieces for 4 , another 1st, McLeod , UPL, maybe Levi

There is 0 chance Jarmo is giving 4 over all for a netminder. The Sabres have 4 goalies, 3 of which are definitely NHL caliber. Do they need an upgrade in net? Not at 4 over all and this is reflected in the multiple reports that they’ve interest in Bob, showing they aren’t going to spend that draft capitol on a goalie.

I wouldn't give you Mcleod and a 1st, let alone adding 4 lmfao.

Yea, the 4 over all isn’t in the conversation for Hellebuyck, no matter how much Jets fans wish for it. It’s just not reality.

I believe that ship sailed at the deadline. Both Steen and Armstrong have stated since then that they want Thomas to stay.

Doesn't make sense. They were open to moving Parayko and moved Kyrou. What is said to media is not truth. Do you think they are going to say... yeah, we are going to trade Thomas for sure. Who does that?

Don't you agree that it looks like they are steering towards rebuild? Thomas is not finishing that contract with the Blues.

I'm the type who reads the signs vs the words

Absolutely not. When has a goalie returned anything of that value?

Byram just got the 4th so Hellybuck can’t

Mmmmmmm not so sure about that

Teams are overpaying with picks . If it was Byram for Hellybuck you say sure

It sure does, but I can only make an assessment based on knowns. We knew the Sabres were in on Thomas and Paryako because it was reported they were talking those players as far back as before the Olympic break.
That’s not the case here. No reports of them speaking, none. And while it’s true they could be without a peep in the insider circles, again, I can only assess the knowns.

My take, as a Sabres fan who is watching what’s going on with the full knowledge of our roster, roster needs, pipeline and so on…..I think they either draft at 4 or make the effort to move up to 2 as Grier showed interest in both Byram as well as a couple of the Sabres pipeline RD’s.

It doesn’t matter what I or any other fan on this forum or our own Sabrespace forum says, it only matters what Jarmo says. Reports are they’ve shown interest in Bob, so there is interest in upgrading netminding, but 4 over all? Not a peep.

This is funny (Google AI said I was right...)

I can't remember who reported it but it might have been Friedman. Not sure.

My question to Google AI:
* Sabres were trying to get both Parayko and Thomas?

Google AI answer:
You are absolutely right, the Buffalo Sabres engaged in deep discussions with the St. Louis Blues attempting to acquire both players during the trade period. [1, 2]
The plan was a highly aggressive move to bolster their roster, but it Ultimately fell through for different reasons for each player.

  • Robert Thomas: The Sabres and Blues went the distance in trade talks surrounding the star center, but the deal ultimately fell apart. It was widely reported that the Sabres were unwilling to part with the massive package of assets required to pry Thomas away. Later, Robert Thomas confirmed he was never formally asked to waive his no-trade clause.
  • Colton Parayko: After the Thomas talks stalled, the two teams hammered out a reported deal in principle. The framework would have sent the veteran defenseman to Buffalo in exchange for prospect Radim Mrtka and a first-round pick. However, Colton Parayko has a full no-trade clause and officially declined to waive it, effectively vetoing the trade

4th overall pick should be used unless Robert Thomas is somehow back on the table or Robo expresses he’d re-sign here.

No one is denying talks didn’t take place, I just said they did, right up to deadline day, not a peep now.

Not a peep now because the Parayko trade was leaked! Blues and Sabres (if true) are hush hush about it now. Whoever leaked that is trash!

I don't know. Just my gut feel. Sabres are big fish hunting and I really do think they are trying to convince both Parayko and Thomas to join them. Paryako did say it was more about being asked last min to waive... correct?

Can't wait to see what Buff does. $13M in cap room (assuming Benson at 7x7) They have so many pieces- could they grab both Larkin and Helley? Think it would require moving out $8M or so (UPL & Zucker).

What are the pieces they wouldn't touch? Dahlin, Power, Benson, Samuelson, Tage, and Doan? At least one Helenius and Ostlund.

Under 27 Core:

Benson-Y-Tage (28*)
-Helenius/Ostlund-Doan
Norris-Mcleod-Quinn
Krebs

Samuelson-Dahlin
Power-Crevier

Available: 4, 20, 27 1st Ostlund/Helenius, UPL, Mrtka, Strbak/Kleber. I know Buff fans love those two young centers, but they could keep every other piece while solving their two greatest needs.

Florida/Buff/MTL should be absolutely terrifying. Can't believe only one will make it out of the first round, and TBL would like to have something to say about it as well.

Trade?

That’s speculative. I can just as easily say the Sabres were speaking to Toronto about Knies because it was reported they had talks around the deadline about him. Not a peep now.

I don’t see a deal with the Blues, the Sabres are hosting the draft, I believe they are picking at 4 unless the off chance they can slide up to 2.

As a side note, it’s also been reported here locally that Forton, our head of scouting and draft analysis for the Sabres, is key on a player that should be there around 20, so as of now, based on known reports, I see the Sabres picking at 4 and 20.

Neither Ostlund or Helenius are available. Ruff loves Ostlund and the organization knows what they have in Helenius.

While I'd understand not giving up for Larkin, do you think either would be available for Roberts (who may not be on the block) or Robertson (if he'd re-sign, of course).

I would ship Ostlund for Thomas as much as it hurts. Helenius has the feel of a star. Every time he takes a shot it feels like it's going to go in.
