Rumor: Sabres finalizing another trade (not Byram)

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
That would have been poor thinking on the part of your FO
No accepting that offer would have been poor thinking on the part of or FO.

MLSE isnt doing a rebuild, so a 4th OA pick that takes 3-4 years to hit its potential isnt valuable enough to us.

Knies will be an elite player. Entering his 24 year season, and is a 65 point player right now.

We will keep Knies as the teams not rebuilding. Knies helps you win games and is a player whose entering his prime soon.

Hawks weren't offering enough if they wanted Knies and both sides moved on

4th + Ostlund + Timmins for Knies and McCabe, the board servers smoulder into a homunculus of hamster wheels and solder.

Knies-TT-Quinn
Benson-Norris-Doan
Zucker-McLeod-Helenius
Malenstyn-Carrick-Danforth

Samuelsson-Dahlin
Power-McCabe
Metsa-Crevier

UPL
Lyon

Imagine turning Mittelstadt into Knies, 45th and Crevier

That wouldn’t have been unbelievably out of the question when Buffalo traded him :)

When was the last time a top 2 goalie in the entire sport was available?

Norris + UPL + 45th + 4th OR Helenius OR "Östlund + 20th"

is a fair package that simultaneously ensures / improves your odds at the following:

a) you have the best goalie tandem in the Atlantic next year,
b) Florida doesn't have the best goalie tandem in the Atlantic next year,

c) you don't have to gamble on whether Norris stays healthy,
d) you open up enough cap space to keep Tuch, if necessary, and
e) you massively improve your goaltending without subtracting anyone from your actual core,
f) you get to retain at least one top C prospect no matter what for the future, and

g) you don't waste a year of Tage and Dahlin's primes by ending up with the 24-25 version of UPL.

I don't need to explain the deal from the Jets' perspective in too much detail; it's a re-tooling move, we are significantly worse for it next year, and we take on a f***ton of risk with Norris and UPL - one has a concerning injury history, and the other hasn't proven himself to be a reliable starter yet. We give up by far the best piece in the deal, and are compensated accordingly.

(If it's McLeod instead of Norris, remove pick #45 - that, however, probably doesn't leave enough cap space for Tuch, so that's why I'd stick to Norris in a deal. Worse for the Jets, but more sensible overall.)

I dub thee: Jetmeister.

Tuch is a goner. I’ve liked a lot of what Buff has done so far, but will be interesting to see how they fill the void left by two really key players to their success last year.

I don’t think Tuch leaving will be hard to cover for. We had Ostlund buried in Rochester for half the season last year, and Helenius for the entirety. Plus Kulich should be back next year. And Benson shouldn’t be hidden on the 4th line, and Quinn also stepped up his game in the 2nd half of last season. We’ve got more than enough young forwards ready to step up.

I hope we have a plan to backfill Byram’s spot (that isn’t just “pray one of our bottom pairing guys can catch lightning in a bottle”), but we certainly have the assets to do what needs to be done there.

Sabres are down two big cogs from last season. They better swing for the fences on a forward addition.

Nah, D is where we actually need to backfill. We have so many young forwards ready to take Tuch’s minutes. We’ve got no one like that on the blue line.

Ostlund and Helenius will ease some of that pain.

Ostlund will be one of the best 2-way forwards on the team and Helenius we will have growing pains but both easily make up for losing Tuch.

Kulich. Maybe a good d if we have the opportunity.
lol WHAT. Dude almost died why would you assume anything.
Sure, let’s play Benson on the 4th line again, keep Helenius in Rochester, and Kulich can stay in the press box.

The forwards are going to be fine.
Benson Norris Tage
Doan Mcleod Ostlund
Zucker Helenius Quinn

Where is Benson on the 4th line and Helenius in Roch?

Let the Leafs fans make fantasy trades. Who cares. In reality the good teams in the Atlantic have lapped the Leafs two times over. Buffalo is littered with good wingers and there is talk that Thompson will play wing. Why would they go for Knies when they can draft either the best centre or defenceman in this draft?

You don't backfill your #1 winger with a prospect lol.
Well I don't disagree completely with this Ostlund is no longer a prospect/rookie and both Ostlund and Helenius are far and above your average young player taking over a roster spot.

Having them both lessens the burden on them both as opposed to just one stepping in. Ostlund is a fantastic 2-way player who will probably get 50 points next year.

Ostlund was already a permanent player. You aren't replacing anyone with him.
