Rumor: Sabres finalizing another trade (not Byram)

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
As a Sabres fan I would do it. Instantly makes Buffalo better and St. Louis gets a load of prospects but I hear yeah I don't think it happens.

Yeah, it is unlikely. The Blues are definitely in a sell mode (See Fault, Schenn, Kyrou, etc), although selling Thomas would be the toughest pill to swallow by far. But there is a school of thought that thinks it must be done.

I think the bigger obstacle would actually be if both of Parayko (already iffy) and Thomas would waive to go to Buffalo.

Why would you want to be in that range again? Means you are bad lol. That rookie isn't helping this year and we could miss the playoffs if we don't go out and get two quality players.
That's part of my argument. Buffalo shouldn't be picking 4 and 20 anytime soon, so make the picks now.

If STL offers up Thomas and 4OA is the ask, then that's different. But adding Malhotra or Bjorck to the Sabres organization means that they'll begin contributing when the Sabres are seriously in contention, and with ELCs. And they won't need to be in the top 6 either. Which is a change from what they Sabres have done with all their previous high picks.

This trade puts the Sabres back into discussions with Tuch, as they're really close on cap space now. They'll be good next season, so trade a pick that's going to again be around 27.

I think Leafs fans wanted 4 OA plus McDavid
Realistically, Leafs probably would have gotten a package similar to what Chicago got for Hagel. Knies is probably a little better/more established, but Hagel was also making something like $1.5 mil at that time. Two firsts, a second, and two prospects seems legit to me. Maybe a little more because this market is so cracked out, but that would probably be near the basic framework.

When was the last time a top 2 goalie in the entire sport was available?

Norris + UPL + 45th + 4th OR Helenius OR "Östlund + 20th"

is a fair package that simultaneously ensures / improves your odds at the following:

a) you have the best goalie tandem in the Atlantic next year,
b) Florida doesn't have the best goalie tandem in the Atlantic next year,

c) you don't have to gamble on whether Norris stays healthy,
d) you open up enough cap space to keep Tuch, if necessary, and
e) you massively improve your goaltending without subtracting anyone from your actual core,
f) you get to retain at least one top C prospect no matter what for the future, and

g) you don't waste a year of Tage and Dahlin's primes by ending up with the 24-25 version of UPL.

I don't need to explain the deal from the Jets' perspective in too much detail; it's a re-tooling move, we are significantly worse for it next year, and we take on a f***ton of risk with Norris and UPL - one has a concerning injury history, and the other hasn't proven himself to be a reliable starter yet. We give up by far the best piece in the deal, and are compensated accordingly.

(If it's McLeod instead of Norris, remove pick #45 - that, however, probably doesn't leave enough cap space for Tuch, so that's why I'd stick to Norris in a deal. Worse for the Jets, but more sensible overall.)
You are seriously out to lunch man…. Just give it a rest helly will never return the 4th pick and you want the Sabre to add on top of it 😂😂😂

I read that Nichushkin is available.

Could it be a Tuch sign and trade where Nichushkin is coming back instead of a pick?

Moving Nichushkin could give Colorado enough cap space to sign Tuch…depending on what he costs….

For Buffalo, it’s better than losing Tuch for nothing and if Nichushkin stays healthy he could do well in Buffalo I think…

Avs are getting rid of Nuke to get some money not take on more. Avs biggest need at this point is a top 4 LHD and Tuch is a luxury they cant/shouldnt chase.

That's the assumption your making.

My counter is leafs wanted more than 4th OA + Crevier + 45th OA for Knies.

Leafs get to keep their player, Hawks got the guy they targeted at a price they were comfortable paying at the end of the day
That would have been poor thinking on the part of your FO

Why? If Buffalo stays at 4, they are getting one of Stenberg, Malhotra, Bjorck, or Reid. I don't think having the choice is worth trading back.
Not that I want to but you could even trade back 2 spots pick up a player or picks and still get one of Malholtra, Bjorck or Reid so it doesn't make sense to trade up you are right.
