did performance bonuses get banned at some point? I feel like if you made it broad enough (i.e. don't make a goals scored specific bonus otherwise the player might never pass the puck) it seems like still a viable contract insurance option.

Rangers have to be careful when it comes to re-signing Clowe. His offense has steadily declined since his career year in 2010-11. I like what he brings to the locker room but his lack of speed is a bit concerning, especially considering the Rangers aren't the most mobile team as it is. A multi-year deal with a cap hit of of around $4 million could very well end up being a bad contract if he doesn't bounce back offensively.

Yeah, if we knew we were getting a Clowe in his prime who would score 20 goals and bring toughness, etc. then I could see the $4m/per but I'm pretty worried that his offense is gone and not coming back.

Agree with the earlier poster who commented that Clowe's looking like he has a lot of miles on him at this point.

If Kreider had emerged as the top 6 winger we thought we were getting, I'm not sure that Clowe as a Ranger even happens in the first place, let alone the consideration of signing him to multiple years..

The Dubinsky is not a comparable situation:

1) The Rangers were buying out years of UFA.

2) The expectation was that he would continue to improve.

3) Dubinsky was in his mid-20s.

Regardless, its a contract that if the Blue Jackets could get out of, I'm sure they would.

agree with all three, plus...

4. The salary cap situation has changed drastically since the most recent lockout.

Did we give 2 2nd and a cond 2nd. Jesus that's brutal for a washed up guy like Clowe.

It was a 2nd in 2013. The Panthers 3rd in 2013 acquired for Wolski. 5th round pick in 2014 which becomes a 2nd in 2014 if the Rangers re-sign Clowe or the Rangers win 2 playoff rounds this spring. He is the same glacial player he was in SJ. His name should be Ryane Slowe from now on. They say he was hurt by the lockout. Fine. Sign a 1 year deal. Show you're worth a longer term deal and we'll talk. They also say Richards was hurt by the lockout. That's the excuse for the older and slower players. Its amazing that a 1/3 of the NHL was interested in trading for Slowe. Wilson lowered his asking price. He wanted a #1,#2 and a top prospect. Wilson already traded the 3rd acquired for Slowe to PHX to rent Torres. Slowe isn't eligible for a performance bonus contract. The Rangers can replace the 2nd by trading 2 of the 3rd's for a 2nd. The 5th round pick is a dime a dozen pick. The Rangers aren't winning 2 playoff rounds this spring. They aren't re-signing Slowe if he doesn't improve his play. Whatever parameters they agreed to with the agent aren't an actual SPC. Some team will give Slowe a long term deal this summer. Take him. It costs the Rangers a 5th in 2014. Big deal.

I don't care if he scores 6 goals in the first round....if we even make it...do not sign this guy...done like Dinner . Sooner put my money on Clarkson or another like type player or leave my money in thy pocket and actually promote a speedy youthful guy that might last 80 games .

Believe the team is 5-1-1 since the trade. Small sample size to judge, but him being slow, and Richards being slow doesn't hurt the team is every one moves as a five man unit, and the speedsters use the speed for short foot races, and the slower skater supports.

Its either speed, or toughness. Very hard to find elite skaters that can provide that level of assurance for skilled players to play with some breathing room. Montreal, Boston, Toronto this year, and Rangers of last year were all comfortably in playoff positions, and have employed three+ tough guys on the ice.

Except not all of them can actually play.... Mike Rupp and Stu Bickel didn't give the Rangers minutes when it was needed from their spots last year, and Fraser, and Orr won't do the same for Tor this year. You need guys that can play to go deep in the playoffs, having that and toughness has its value.

Where did this idea that Tortorella has some sort of magical conditioning regimen for players come from? First it was Richards and the excuse was "he didn't get a full training camp" and now it's Clowe with the same excuse? They've played nearly half of a full season of NHL hockey and they're still slow. These guys are slow players and have been slow players for a long time now. Nothing will change that.

Damn, RangerBoy spittin some fire on Clowe, get em! In all seriousness, I don't believe he's totally washed up, he still has soft hands, everyone can greatly benefit not from just the conditioning aspect, but knowing and becoming familiar with our whole (hopefully tweaked in the off-season) system. That should help our acquisitions, and top prospects the most. Richards the ballerina has no excuse.

How much money for Slowe? How many years? The new CBA isn't like the old CBA. You can't ditch a player in the AHL and get him off the cap. The Rangers need to be very careful with re-signing Clowe. He has gotten worse and worse in every game. His numbers have dropped every year and he wants top dollar. First Slowe wanted 8 years $34M which was reported by CSN Bay Area. He can get a MAX term. Then Russo reported Slowe wanted $25M/5 years. Let the Flyers pay him crazy $$.

Signig Clowe has the very real possibility of being a disaster. I'm not convinced by him yet.

One year at 3,5 max would be ideal. But he Will never sign that so point is moot.
Your numbers have merit, but he would get more elsewhere. Believe RB got this one down...

If he thinks he can and should get more elsewhere then let him. Sucks the Rangers gave up so many assets for a guy who will just leave though.

This is the problem that the Rangers seem to have with "big ticket" guys. They never seem to realize what kind of player they're getting. The assumption is always "he needs a change of scenery" and he'll find his game again. Clowe has been slow for years and his game has been trending down for years as well.

I have nothing against Clowe as a person, but as a player, he's not worth rolling the dice on when it comes to a multi-year deal.

Clowe has a huge speed problem... I wanted it to work out because he is one of those rare guys with both toughness and hands, but the overwhelming lack of speed probably means the team should move on.

We already have a lot of speed around him, so perhaps it will work out short term, but as the years go he's only going to get slower.

I really don't see his lack of speed as that large of a problem given the speed that would be around him. His hands and hockey IQ are good as well. 3-4 years wouldn't be an issue for me.

What assets? Don't you know that draft picks are worthless?

:laugh::laugh:

Anything above 3M per for more than 3 years would be an issue for me.

Not sure you can dump guys like Boyle, Pyatt and Asham - all with cheaper options - without taking back some $$ in trades and also then got enough $$$ to resign Clowe to what he himself believes he can get and is worth. Math

If Clowe hits UFA, does it hurt or help him that Clarkson is on the market as well?

I think the latter, as some team missing out on Clarkson might pay to get Clowe.

I'm still confident a deal is going to get done with Clowe, but I'm not sure if I'm going to like the terms.
