Don't get me wrong, the fights are fun. But a prevention it is not.
I don't think it has to be a prevention, but now other teams can take the Rangers a little more seriously. Especially now that they can hit back instead of shrinking and then the game is out of hand at 5-1.

Reaves has never been that kind of player. he's been clean basically his whole career. I think you'd be very disappointed expecting this from him, or 99% of players in the league.

Tom Wilson is unique. He's a sociopath and built like a linebacker. He's been in the league 8 years and consistently proves he's a bastard who doesn't have any respect for the game or rules. Wanting a guy to be like him is fruitless.

I think some people might disagree. He isnt a frequent cheap shot guy like Wilson but he has definitely had some moments.

While I do not like dirty players there is not a NHL team in the league that would not love to have a Tom Wilson and that is not because of his points. It is because of the X factor he brings to the game. Guys have to keep their heads up. Guys may rush passes when he is near. Guys will not be as comfortable when he is on the ice. I think the guy is an idiot but sometimes idiots help win games.

If Tom Wilson was on the market the Rangers would be shoving their way to the front of the line.

This isn't even about the past. It's about the present and the future.
It's also about saving Ryan Lindgren for at least 3-4 more seasons . He now has somebody that has his back for a change . Plus this will make Trouba a bigger pric*and believe it or not Kreider will also not be as yellow as he has been . This has a ripple effect that will spread through the whole club . It might even shape Miller up a bit as he expands on the physical side of his game . We have the money and the time to enjoy a season or so of Reaves . Enjoy it as we continue to build and it will get better the following season when we add Schneider and Robertson into the opening lineup . Reaves was and will be like an assistant coach for many of these young kids under Gallant . TB has done well with that goon that they have that has 3 Cup rings for two different teams . Welcome aboard RR.

If you like this pick up because you think it will deter a guy like Wilson, you're going to be disappointed. When Wilson finishes laughing at all the moves the Rangers have made this offseason, he'll take a moment to catch his breath and wipe his eyes, then go back to playing exactly the same way he always has.

Hopefully Reaves can be effective in a 4th line role where he throws his weight around and stirs up some shit, without being a liability. I'm optimistic. But deterrent, he is not.

What they need to do is mix the lines up. Not have all the goons on the bottom lines, but play them with the super stars. Just like how Gretzky had McSorley on his wing and Yserman had Probert. Have Reaves on Panarin's line to protect him.

No one is saying that one player will change another player's ways. It's about being there as a deterrent on gameday. Believe it or not, protecting your top line players is still a thing in this league. I'd rather Reaves do it than Panarin.

Drury got Reaves but after he actually diversified the top 9.

Gorton would have gotten Reaves, said "that's it guess we're toff now" and rolled the same top 9 as last year.
That is a huge statement right there . It can't be a battle of one....it has to be like the Bruins and everybody partiscipates . It's a team game and real teams win...

yea i don't get the prevention / deterrent angle...seems way more people are complaining about that as a justification than there are using it as one. his presence isn't going to stop someone from doing something dumb...thats not rocket science. i think its way less about the other team and way more about our own. in saying that, no i don't think guys now think they can do whatever they want and won't have to answer for it...what i mean is having a guy whos one of the toughest in the league and great teammate on the bench with you will hopefully bring out some more emotion from the entire roster. seeing him going out and playing with some energy and being physical/emotional and bringing an attacking attitude hopefully rubs off on the rest of the roster. to me thats why you'd bring him in. we've had a massive void there forever. like you mentioned those nights youre getting it handed to you...every time we do we just eat it and move on, no response. i think it goes a long way in postseason hockey when a teams had a couple of rowdy games together where different guys step up and put their nuts on the table. having a guy that'll blaze a trail in that sense might go a long way towards bringing that collective mentality into existence

FWIW I believe this trade was driven by Dolan. Panarin getting piledriven into the ice did not sit well with him. Out came the letter that Davidson and Gorton wanted no part of and it was pretty clear that letter was from Dolan.....and then Davidson and Gorton got fired....and later on Quinn walked the plank too. After which Drury becomes GM and Gerard Gallant is hired to coach. Gallant was a pretty good player in his time and one mean buckaroo not all that unlike Pat Verbeek another player from his time and maybe the original 'little ball of hate'. Would not surprise me that when Gallant was interviewed among other things Reaves name came up. This was a pretty predictable move on the Rangers part.

Playing his game is not equal to cross checking a defenseless player in the neck and ragdolling our superstar

Wilson will not turn into a choir boy... but he will be kept in check

I see people writing things like "Drury is so predicatble" or "We're being defined by Tom Wilson"

I would agree.

Again, the Wilson incident will go down in Rangers history as a defining moment because of how it exposed the franchise as being wholly unprepared for physically challenging playoff type games.

As they say: "It's not what happens to you, because shit's gonna happen. It's how you handle what's happened to you that really counts towards who you are."

Predictable? Fine.

Defined by Tom Wilson? Fine.

We absolutely have some of the very best young talent and veteran talent in all of professional hockey.

A line up even with departure of Buchnevich, that is top to bottom literally choked with talent.

If we don't step up in this moment and deal with the challenge of protecting and defending all that talent...what does that say about us?

I'd say it's a damn sight worse than being seen as either "predictable" or "defined".

Thanks Tom Wilson for helping the Rangers to see what needed to be done.

See you soon A Hole.

Reaves lives rent free in Wilson’s head. Wilson outside of their first fight in 2013 has never come out on top.

29 pages of worrying. He was available, not every mid round pick will be kept.

The Rangers have two 2nds and two 4ths still.

This team needed some real veteran leadership. Guy who have been there and done it. Goodrow, Blais, Reaves all are vets (young one in Blais's case).

what was the last regime drinking which caused them to forget all grit?

The previous administration did what you're supposed to do.

Get as many high-end potential players as possible and then augment the roster.

The owner didn't like that and freaked out, as he has many times before.
