This is actually my favorite acquisition of the offseason so far. I kind of wish they made this happen before the Buch trade. And maybe then we wouldn't have moved him for Blais and a 2nd.
I think Blais is still gonna be someone who many fans will come to appreciate. He's young and adds speed/forecheck that I am not sure Reeves can still bring as well as he could 2 years ago.

There were…other options discussed. I’ll leave it at that.

The crux of the deal comes down to how the Rangers view Blais and subsequently how they use him and if they’re accurate or being overly optimistic.

As for the pick, I actually don’t really care about as far as selecting a prospect. I think it’s a potential asset for the moves we are inevitably going to make it - be it short term or something closer to a year out.

You are the one plugged in so, as always, I defer to your knowledge on such matters. I can't imagine you are allowed to disclose, but I also can't imagine the other options would have been terribly more palatable for this fanbase. Trading Buch was always going to be a necessary evil, and the return, baring something catastrophicly stupid by another team probably would have resulted in the same "LOLRangers" BS either way. Look at what Reinhart got with his pedigree, consistency, and perceived versatility to play C in a pinch.

are they 'expecting' Blais to be with Panarin?

Potential? Yes. But that's all Jones is right now. He's a 21 year old kid that's still very raw. We saw glimpses of the potential, but he's definitely not ready for full time NHL duty. He's not earning a spot over Lindgren, Miller, and Nemeth. No where for him to play anyway. Not now and not in two or three years where your left side likely looks like Robertson, Miller, and probably still Lindgren as long as he's still in one piece. Right now may very well be the most Jones is ever worth in a trade.

Potential is all any of Jones, Robertson or Lundqvist "are" right now. There's no reason to suspect Jones is less ready than Lundqvist. And he's probably more ready than Robertson.
And we saw Fox and Miller both play around the same point in their career. Unexpectedly. Before preseason, they both were also "only piotential." And I don't think Jones looked as raw as you are suggesting. There's no reason to think he's more raw than Lundqvist. And I believe Robertson is actually the most raw of the 3.

We have no way of knowing if and how much progress he's made though. And we won't know until preseason. Fox took major steps his first full season. Miller to me didn't look so hot prior to proving himself on the ice during the season. If they can do it, there is no reason Jones can't. By all accounts Jones is supposed to be ahead of the curve and fairly mature emotionally and mentally. I wouldn't discount him. And you can say the same thing about Lundqvist. As good as Lundqvist is supposed to be, there's no telling if he will be ready to play in the NHL. Both Jones and/or Lundqvist might need some AHL time. But I wouldn't be shocked if they did not and could slot right in.

Nemeth is a decent signing. But I really am not sure things will be so predictable with this team. And Miller well. While he played very good last year he also still has a long way to go. I am honestly not sure who will end up being traded out of Jones, Miller and Robertson. Many seem to think Jones, but I don't think there is actually any signs to support that yet. Y

And I don't know why you easily slot in Robertson but suggest Jones isn't ready and that there will be no where for him to play. Jones is seemingly ahead of Robertson in his development, a superior offensive potential compared to both Robertson and Miller, and Jones has the ability to be as good or better than Miller defensively. There's no reason we should expect Robertson to slot in so soon, but not Jones. This really could go either way. And I do think we will see Jones play more NHL games before we get a glimpse of Robertson on the big club.

I think the Rangers could’ve gotten Blais and a first or similar.

For me it’s not moving Buch, I just think we didn’t maximize the return. And I feel like we probably could’ve, but we probably pushed this move a little bit. I don’t think it would’ve been met with universal praise, but I do think it would’ve taken the edge off.

With all this new toughness, the games will be edgier this season. I personally would like to see the beast awaken again in Kreider. He used to play with more force than he does now. You see glimpses of it when he’s pissed off but not quite like he was the first few seasons.

So just to be clear the Rangers have a combination of elite world class skill the likes we’ve probably never seen in this org at once and a bunch of motherf***er do anything to win pieces of shit to compliment them and people are upset?

Definitely hope you are right.

What I don't like about it from the Rangers' perspective is that they're not tooling up to match a certain team or a star player they can't get over in the playoffs, like the Flames did in the late 80s to match Gretzky and Messier, for example. Instead they're just trying to intimidate a 40-point player in the regular season. It sends a wrong message.

Amazing. I am one of the biggest anti-goon guys around, and yet I have no problem with moving a third round pick for a guy who’s at least able to play a mediocre fourth line game and then take on the Tom Wilson’s of the world when necessary. He’ll dress like 1/3 to 1/2 of the games and play limited minutes. He’s a specialized 13th forward. We gave up a third round pick for him. I have no problems with this move.

The return (value wise, not necessarily directionally) on the Buchnevich trade continues to be my one (major) gripe with this off-season.

I think there’s a very real possibility Blais will see significant top six time.

The question might be whether he stays there and how the wings fall in line. Are we keeping Kravtsov and looking to slide him up at some point? Are we moving Kreider over to the right side? Are we moving Strome and sliding Chytil up and using Goodrow at center? Are we looking at a right side of Kreider, Blais, and Reaves with one slot open? Etc. etc.

Those are unanswered questions which could pivot reactions significantly.

I see what you did there… :naughty:

I think the “ideal” way to move Buch would have been to package him as part of an Eichel deal or something like that. But as that obviously wasn’t on the table they decided to go for a lesser player but one they apparently liked a lot. I feel like Buch’s value maybe wasn’t as high as we had hoped, as well. How many teams wanted him enough to extend him like St Louis did?
And it’s probably not a situation you squeeze too hard, as a GM.

"Hey Tom, congratulations on retirement, and a long NHL career, looking back what was the most memorable thing about it after winning the 'Cup?"

"Oh you know, there's a lot of great memories, but I think dictating an entire offseason for a franchise I wasn't even playing for had to be up there. That was really special."
That’s a bit of an exaggeration.

True. But if it wasn’t Reaves I was worried about getting overplayed, it would be some other 13th forward. Every coach in the NHL seems to have this weakness. Witness the quadruple-A players who got ice time last year when we should have been seeing what we had in a Gauthier, for example.
