That C needs to go. He wasn't made for it.

He just hasn't been the same since it was given to him. I would hate to waste a players prime productive years all due to a letter.
He's not 'overrated' which some have thrown out there. Prior to his offensive breakout year (13'-14'), he was a number 1 defensemen. The offense just took him to another level and got him more media attention but he was still very good prior.

The C absolutely needs to go. He has regressed ever since. What an incredibly overrated player. Is he still injured? You just don't forget to play hockey like that. We all know the Rangers are too gutless to take the C away which is what needs to happen asap.

Hasn't been healthy since the Captaincy either. Plenty of stars have regressed with young captaincy only to to bounce back. Getzlaf, Giroux, Ovechkin, Stamkos..

im just gonna say it. Ryan McDonagh has been the worst rangers defenseman this year.

Staal and it's not even a little bit close in my opinion.

And the C stuff isn't it IMO, he was best when the team had another shutdown pair in Staal - Stralman that let him run a little more wild.

McDonagh has not looked right since he severely injured his left shoulder for the second time about this time last year. He came back and played at an all world level against Montreal and LA in the 2014 playoffs, but has not been 100% since the beginning of last season.

Severely injuring the same shoulder twice takes more time to be up to 100% strong than the time he's had off. He probably didn't start skating until late August at the earliest because of his broken foot, as well.

I'll re-evaluate McDonagh when he's had a fully healthy season and playoffs. Otherwise, it's been the same old HFNYR blame game and sky is falling song and dance.

Is there a chance that he'll never be the same or will it heal at some point? How awful would it be if he never recovers to what he once was.

I will confess that the thought has crossed my mind.

I've seen a lot of young players who have very good careers, but never quite reach the elite level they were once on the cusp of hitting due to injuries, timing or other factors.

I think McD will be a very good defenseman for a very long time. The question of whether or not he gets back to being considered for inclusion in the elite group.

Elite or not I feel like he has played very well for a while now. That Toronto game he was dominant defensively and was a big part of the empty net goal.

He's just gotta reboot. Let him go back to being a defensive rock then te offense'll come back (hopefully).

I don't think the C is the problem.

The C just happened to coincide with injuries and other factors.

Keep in mind, he had one really good offensive year. It is possible that the offense was a career year for him. It wouldn't be unheard of.

McDonagh had 30 ESP in 2012. Only 6 guys had more. That was a great offensive year too. Too bad the guy behind the bench didn't realize his potential on the PP and in pure offensive situations.

Karlsson: 50 ESP
Bieksa: 34
Chara: 33
Byfuglien: 33
Yandle: 32
Boyle: 31

Pretty good company. Lol @ Karlsson's domination

McD has steadily looked better. Get him a good partner and I think we'll see a return to form, if not this year then next. He's still young.

I really don't think the C is something players really think about, it's just an easy thing to blame. I don't think that the C is seen to be nearly as important as it once was. I feel like in the days of Messier in NYR part 1, people put a lot more weight in it than now. I heard a lot more about captains. I don't think I know who 95% of the captains are in the league anymore.

Totally agree with this. It's an easy thing to point to and it's impossible to prove either way so it stick to some degree.

I think G is a significant part of the problem, and natural ups and downs / variance of all but the most elite players contributes as well. G makes it harder / slower to get out of a funk.

McD had a great game last night though.

McDonagh and Girardi now 36.6% CF% when on the ice together.

Just gonna shrug and enjoy McDonagh making good plays and ignore Girardi struggling.

IMO McDonagh's defensive strength's are 1 on 1 play and making plays with the puck when he gets it (as long as he doesn't try to get too cute with it). Positionally in front of the net he's not the greatest, and when you can't get the puck out of the zone for various reasons (like your partner just throwing the puck away) you're going to look worse.

McDonagh's actually been pretty good since his hideous first three games.

His partner on the other hand....
