Really starting to hate these NCAA draftee rules..
it’s no different than other players drsfted
NCAA players are also at the disadvantage compared to their peers. Excluding Russians, drafted players with rights expiring have their rights expire June 30th, giving them the opportunity to sign with a team when free agency opens. NCAA players have to wait until mid-August
no they are not.
Four years of exclusive player rights, same as for everyone else that the NHL has a transfer agreement. The only place it is 2 years is the CHL. Russia has no transfer agreement so there is no expiration of drafted player rights.
yep..it’s 4 yrs…..for most college players.
CHL players at 18 dont sign, they re-enter the draft thrn enter UFA after 4 years
europe it’s 4 years
college kids it generally till they graduate which is 4 years.
The NCAA is much more deeply flawed than just NHL team rights to players. The whole amateurs can't make money system needs an overhaul.
they can get money now.
the nhl could do something that allows deferred contract signing on college players
Can someone explain how signing this year and playing a game would get Johnson to RFA quicker?
If he waits until summer he is 22 and only has to sign a 2 year ELC? Which would be the same as burning a year?
likr Levi, playing a game burns first year which has ELC end a year earlier and you get to second contract.
In Portillo's case, seeing the treatment that Levi has gotten from the team, I don't really think it was that unreasonable for him to decide he was better off somewhere else than trying to compete with the anointed heir apparent.
In Johnson's case, if the Sabres lose out on him because they refused to let him burn the ELC year, well that's on them.
to be fair…Portillo didn’t do much when Levi was acquired. He just played back up one yr at Michigan.
why should he be threatened by another college goalie is beyond me.
Can someone explain to me the downside to letting him burn a year that is so severe it's worth just letting him walk for what is essentially the first pick of the third round? Unless they are convinced he has no chance of being an NHL player it makes no sense whatsoever.
it would fall at 31 of the 2nd round. Flyers also have a ncaa no sign from 2018 draft who would also become a 2nd round pick. If thst happens the pick would fall between the conf final losers and the cup final teams.
because of covid, he does have another year of college left. He could opt to return. That would just delay the pick to 2025 if Buffalo refuses to sign him…maybe for es them to trade him to where he wants to go.
since his team went to the frozen finale he likely could only get one game in no matter what. If minnesota was eliminated in the opening weekend things might be different.
I think they wanted a max contract like Levi got while buffalo might have said ATO and then ELC And not max salary/ bonuses.
My thoughts— personally him vs a late 2nd…a late 2nd has trade value next year while Johnson might not be viewed as a 2nd round trade value across the league even though his chance of success is probably better than a player picked at 61. He knows that and might say I’m not tutning pro delaying them getting that trade chip maybe trying to force a trade. If he says I’m turning pro and not signing with buffalo. Buffalo atvthe draft knows they have this 2nd as a trade chip in a deal of picks or player trades.
