That's what's confused me about people wanting to point the finger at Brisson. He worked with the team to extend Samuelsson, and with the Power ELC without issue. I'd even say he helped in moving along the Eichel trade.

He's going to advise his clients based on what they want, not what he wants. I think if he was willingly screwing over certain teams even to the detriment of his clients, he wouldn't have the client list he has.
Agreed. At the end of the day that's what your lawyer is for. You tell them what you want and expect them to go get it for you while you stay out of their way.

Oh, I'm not blaming Brisson for Eichel leaving. I'm blaming Brisson for him poisoning Portillo and (ostensibly) Johnson against us.
In Portillo's case, seeing the treatment that Levi has gotten from the team, I don't really think it was that unreasonable for him to decide he was better off somewhere else than trying to compete with the anointed heir apparent.

In Johnson's case, if the Sabres lose out on him because they refused to let him burn the ELC year, well that's on them.

Get your logic out of here and let me witch hunt in peace!!!! ;)

Can someone explain to me the downside to letting him burn a year that is so severe it's worth just letting him walk for what is essentially the first pick of the third round? Unless they are convinced he has no chance of being an NHL player it makes no sense whatsoever.

Meh. I'm all outta f***s to give. The guy sounds like he's a Joker-level defenseman. We already have one of those.

He’s just not that good.

I think there is a bit of chicken and egg here. Did portillo not want to sign because we were treating Levi like the anointed? Or did we treat Levi like the anointed because we already knew portillo wasn't signing? I don't think anyone can say one way or the other.

Aside from him not being that good to get this kinda treatment. Management has said multiple times they only want people who want to be here. If he is going to make this his sticking point it seems a clear indication to me that he doesn't really care to be here.

I think Adams ideology of “players who want to be here” has been a big reason why this franchise turned around. I also think it’s a big reason why the group group galvanized this season.

With that being said, if Johnson is going to ho and hum about a list of demands he can f*** off and go sign somewhere else. A player with that kind of attitude will not mesh with our current group. Same reason I really don’t care about us trading Portillo. Both would be nice to have in the system, but if they have this kind of mentality we’re probably better off without them.

Obviously the Sabres feel pretty strongly Johnson isn't worth burning the ELC year.

Is it just playing poker? I don't know what they gain with not signing him, letting him burn that year; especially how thin they are at D.
Whats there for Johnson to gain? If I would be him I wouldn't sign an ATO; I would just wait for UFA and see whats out there.

Do we even know for certain if the issue is that he wants to burn a year? For all we know the Sabres offered to get him in the columbus game to burn a year and Johnson said no anyways.

I would think that qualifies as something that would not be positive, per Adams' comments.

I mean if Adams was like "hey, want to come over and get a game in?" and Johnson's camp goes "Yea that sounds good, let us talk about it a bit and we'll get back to you". I could see adams walking away thinking, "well that went well, they seemed receptive." I have used that move multiple times in negotiations when I want the conversation to end but it won't if I just say no flat out.

Lets pretend that didn't even happen and it went poorly. I still don't think Adams is the type to come out and say "well we had a meeting with them, and it did not go well, he likely isn't signing with us".

There are lots of reasons why Adams could have thought it went well or just not wanted to be completely open with how it went.

Chad's backing off the Johnson train now as well

I'll predict he does not sign to play in Rochester and either gets packaged in summer deal or becomes a FA and the Sabres get crap pick, more than willing to eat crow.

I'm not sure of the timing of everything, but is it possible the playoff race factored into all this? I certainly understand the team not wanting to shove a guy with zero NHL experience into the roster when they were still mathematically alive in the race. The Levi situation seems different to me given how dire goaltending was, but defense had plenty of room to get worse and not better down the stretch.

I can understand this being messy from both perspectives. The bottom line is the NCAA agreement sucks ass

Adams said it went well and Dreger mentioned speaking to Brisson and he thought it was going well. *shrug*

Well I suppose the question then is, if it went so well, why isn't he signed yet? Something doesn't add up and if the hitch was getting a game to burn a year why didn't that happen? If that was a must have for Johnson and adams was agreeable then why didn't it happen? If it was a must have for Johnson and Adams was a hard no then why did he say it went well?

Either way it doesn't add up

I’m still puzzled as to why Dreger opened a segment on Sabres live emphatically announcing that Johnson will sign when the Minnesota season is over. I know he’s blowing smoke out of his ass most of the time but the way they announced It almost seemed official.
