No, I’m asking why Johnson would have that option now. It doesn’t make sense to hand wring over Ryan Johnson not having signed given that there is a whole year before he becomes UFA.

Ryan Johnson should be signed at the conclusion of Minnesota’s season. He’s pro ready and would fill an important role.

I'm not hand-wringing, and I'm not suggesting we try to sign him in the middle of his season, so I'm not sure why that question was posed in response to me

Somewhat concerned on if he'll sign or not. Gotta put yourself in these prospects shoes in these situations. There are some decent pros for him personally to choose against it and vice versa. I wonder if he's paying attention to our draft this summer before making a decision.

Power Dahlin
Joker Samuelson
Bryson Johnson

Sounds great in theory but that is a really young D core. Add a Jiricek/Nemec to the picture and even perhaps Chesley with 1 of the other picks and it's not such a clear cut long-term path for Ryan.

Regardless if Johnson signs or not, and I hope he does, I'm still confident that we're going to have an improved D corps next season. If Johnson doesn't sign and we bring in an established veteran, that wouldn't be the end of the world.

i don’t think we’re gonna have any problems signing him

You are REALLY overthinking this.

Johnson is going to plot out everyone who might make the NHL for us? Then he’s scouting potential defensive draft picks we might make? I mean come on.

Johnson, like all of these young guys, has supreme confidence in themselves and are very competitive. I’d be very surprised if he viewed many of those young guys as an impediment to making the NHL roster.

My mistake. Rereading back now, I misunderstood the reference of “that option”. I thought you’d meant the option to go UFA.

if they signed both Johnson and Power after their college season t, unlike other seasons, with the season ending at end of April there will be games to play in buffalo.normal seasons, the season woukd end the same as frozen 4.

id expect Johnson to play all 22/23 in Rochester.

I hated this pick but it looks like I was wrong. It would be great if he developed and we could make a hockey trade for a stay at home RD

I'm still a bit skeptical. One good start to a season does not make a sure-fire player. His passing is nice, though. I'm with you in terms of not liking the pick. But I'll come around. That's the worst part about these NCAA guys imo. I cannot get a read for how well they translate to the next level.

Just to point out that he's got the same number of games played this season as last and has one more point. It wasn't a good start to a single year, he's a quality player in his own right.

I don't even think he's 50/50 to sign in Buffalo, Why would he? He has Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson on LD ahead of him on Sabres depth charts. We won't count Bryson. Sign him after this college year and offer him some NHL time to burn a year. That's their last hope.

Why would they not allow him to burn that first contract year? That's pretty standard practice with higher draft picks coming out of the NCAA. Similarly, there has been zero indication that he is thinking of anything but signing with Buffalo when the time comes. None. He's not yet fully ready for prime time - signing him and putting him in Rochester for the majority of next season is fully within reason just like they did with Samuelsson. By the time he's ready to graduate, it's possible the LD situation in Buffalo has changed. Or it hasn't and they can make an assessment at that time.

He'll sign with Buffalo, take the nearly $3m in ELC money, and eliminate the risk of having an early career-ending injury. He'll play two years in Rochester and then the Sabres will have a decision to make: trade Johnson or trade someone higher on the depth chart. Johnson looks like he has top four potential. Don't be so sure he's the one that goes.

Two 1OAs on LD is definitely a luxury. What kind of package would either of them, young and proven, bring in return?

Speaking of Faber, the idea of a Johnson-Faber swap is interesting. Similar value LHD for RHD

But it's now or never after this season. Yes? If he goes back f0r another year, we're cooked.

Isn't he a sophomore this year? Sabres have his rights for two more years of NCAA eligibility.

edit: Nope. Junior. One year left.

But I can't see any reason why we wouldn't try to sign him after this season. What more will he learn there? His development warrants him playing in the AHL next year.

But more to your point, if he goes diva on us and refuses to sign an ELC (damaging his earning potential) it would indicate that he should be moved before his draft rights expire. It just sounds so unlikely to me.

Hell of a pick for 31st overall. Think his offense was severely underrated at the draft and he could easily go earlier in a redraft
